Titans | Brown wants extension, trade or could walk out

Published Thu Aug 10 1:55:00 p.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) Jim Wyatt, of the Tennessean, reports Tennessee Titans RB Chris Brown's agent visited training camp Wednesday, Aug. 9, with hopes of progressing on a contract extension for his client. Thus far, general manager Floyd Reese has not been willing to discuss an extension to Brown's contract or trading him. Wynn Silberman, Brown's agent, noted Brown may be advised to leave training camp at some point. Silberman said if an extension isn't a possibility they want Brown out of Tennessee.

BUT:

GM Reese: Brown not available

Published Wed Aug 9 6:53:00 p.m. ET 2006

(Rotoworld) Titans GM Floyd Reese told the Associated Press that RB Chris Brown, who has requested to be dealt, is not available in trade talks.

Impact: The Jets and Dolphins have been named as possible landing spots, but Tennessee is unlikely to deal Brown, their only all-purpose back, with LenDale White (toe) and Travis Henry (knee) currently rehabbing injuries.

What is the deal with this guy? Just shut up and play football. Prove you can actually make it through an entire season without getting injured.

My money is on Brown winning.

Of course Reese didn't even cave in to the coaching staff... what's a backup RB got on him?

Jets/Dolphins would be money spots for him.

Is this a case of agents stirring up trouble? What's the history of Wynn Silberman - who else does he represent?

Wynn Silberman, Brown's agent, noted Brown may be advised to leave training camp at some point. Silberman said if an extension isn't a possibility they want Brown out of Tennessee.
So what does this mean?Wynn Silberman - "My client is not good enough to compete with Lendale White and Travis Henry for playing time here at Tenneseee. Before we are forced to show our hand, we want Tennessee to give us a boat-load of money. If not, we want an opportunity to bam-boozle another franchise. Thank you."

man, this has been the most prolonged tease I can remember. BTW, white was back practicing monday or tuesday. Please Chris, walk out.

This has become a story that never should have been. I liked him coming out on Colorado, but has never been able to stay healthy enough to perform. For him to be asking for a new contract and alot of money is rediculous. He needs to prove that he can stay healthy and perform at a high level to get any klind of money.

Titans | White involved in brawl

Published Thu Aug 10 2:28:00 p.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) Jim Wyatt, of the Tennessean, report Tennessee Titans RB LenDale White and S Donnie Nickey sparked a brawl Thursday, Aug. 10. Nickey said White spit on him after a play, to which several other defenders agreed. Shortly later, White was knocked out of bounds by Nickey after a pass. White then elbowed S Vincent Fuller and several other defenders, including Nickey, jumped in. Head coach Jeff Fisher called Nickey's hit a "cheap shot" and told the players to leave it on the field.

Lets' see how this plays out. When the "Trade me" talk first surfaced, it was found that it wasn't Brown but his new agents banging on Reese's door. Brown sounded kind of sheepish about it and Fisher ripped the agents.

This could be more of the same.

Let's see.

Since 2003, only three RBs drafted have more production that Chris Brown: Larry Johnson, Willis McGahee and Domanick Davis. Of those, Davis had nearly three seasons as a starter, to Chris Brown's two. That means that Chris Brown has better numbers than Julius Jones, Kevin Jones, Steven Jackson and Tatum Bell. He missed five games in '04, but only one game in '05.

Brown isn't afraid to compete - not only that, but he was named the starter, and praised as the most complete back in camp. And yet, the team won't give him a decent contract extension, and has brought in new backs two years in a row to compete with him. So Brown's asking if the team actually believes in him or not. He's a 3rd-round pick, so he never got the big money. Most teams try to lock up important players before their contracts expire. Brown was offered something like a 4-year $10 million deal. That's no exactly starter money. In other words, Brown has been told that the organization views him as a part-time player. So he wants out. The team has already told him they don't view him as an essential part of the team, so why should he have so much desire to stay?

It would be one thing to call him out if he wasn't at camp, competing, and by all accounts I've read, he has been the best RB in camp.

From another source:White returns to practice

Published Thu Aug 10 2:23:00 p.m. ET 2006

(Rotoworld) Titans RB LenDale White returned to practice Thursday, but reportedly spit on one of his teammates.

Impact: White isn't exactly helping his immature reputation with this inconsistent training camp. Travis Henry, incidentally, reportedly ripped off multiple long runs during the same session.

Lendale just moved up my rankings 10 spots. Mean streaks are good.

Not sure what you mean by more productive. Naturally, Brown would have more yards then the RBs drafted last year. So that essentially leaves 2 draft classes. Of the significant RBs in his class (yes I have discounted Musa Smith), he has rushed for the 2nd fewest yards. He has outpaced SJAX so foar, but Brown did not have to serve as a backup for Priest.McGahee rushed for more yards in each of his two years as a starter.

SJAX outrushed him in his only year as a starter

DD has outrushed him

As for the 2004 draftees, with one less year of work their yardage is not significantly lower except for Bell who has never been a starter. However, it should be noted that KJ outrushed him in 2004, JJ outrushed him last year as did Tatum Bell.

Of the 2005 draftees, both Williams and Brown outrushed him. Only BEnson who was stuck on the bench behind TJones did not.

Now granted I have not condsidered some other RBs (Arrington, Greg Jones, etc), but of the guys you mentioned, Brown has not significantly outperformed those guys.

To me, Brown has to earn a BIG contract. He has not done it so far.

2003 draftees

Larry Johnson 2,416 yards 1/2 year as starter

Willis Mcgahee 2,375 yards 2 years as starter

Steven Jackson 1,719 yards 1 year as starter

Chris Brown 2139 yards 2 years as starter

Dominck Davis 3195 yards 2 1/2 years as starter

2004 draftees

Kevin Jones 1767 yards 1 1/2 years as starter

Tatum Bell 1317 yards 0 years as starter

Julius Jones 1812 yards 1 1/2 years as starter

2005

Ronnie Brown 907 yards 1/2 year as starter

Carnel Williams 1178 yards 1 year as starter

Cedric Benson 272 yards 0 years as starter

The other guys were drafted in the 2nd round, and got more money than Brown. If he has outplayed them, I would submit that he has been underpaid. But he's nto demanding a new contract - he's rejecting the lowball offer that the Titans made, and responded by saying "if you think so little of me, trade me and we'll part ways." I think he is in a positon to say that.

I considered both passing and running yards. And I agree that Brown has not distinguished himself beyond Julius Jones, Steve Jackson, or Kevin Jones in any major way. Each of these players has their upsides and their drawbacks. But none of thesd players have been offered such an low contract extension offer, and none of these other teams have selected another running back with their 2nd round pick. And in FF, all these guys are off the board before Brown. So I ask you - given how close the production is, why is Brown so devalued?

First off, Brown is devalued because the Titans who see him more closely than anyone, seem to be less than thrilled with him. Doesn't that tell us something? And as far as what position he's in, he's in the position of honoring the contract he signed. He might want an extension or more money. But how many NFL people look at him and say, "wow, you're really overperforming your rookie contract". I'd say not many.

J

Agree, Joe. UNfortunately, NFL folks forget that outside of Eddie George and Earl, the Titans/Oilers franchise has a long history of guys who perform well for a year or two and then disappear, mostly because they weren't that great in the first place.....Rodney Thomas....Lorenzo White...Gary Brown....Alonzo Highsmith...Mike Rozier.

It's obviously been a long time, but in this franchise's 46 seasons, outside of Eddie and Earl, only Mike Rozier has led the team in rushing more than 3 seasons.
