Chris Cooley (1 Viewer)

I was reviewing a bunch of different statistics tonight, and one that stood out was Cooley's 23% reception/target percentage. This is an aberration that evens out over time. He was at 70% in 2005 and 60% in 2006, so don't dump him in TE-required leagues because of poor fantasy points through just two weeks.

His total targets are tied for 6th in the league among TEs at 13, which is right where he should be. A more normal 61% catch rate would have him with 8 receptions, which would also be 6th in the league.

Catch totals don't say it, but he's as much a part of the offense as we expected in preseason rankings. So far he has no TDs and just 3 receptions, but sit tight. He'll have his hot 6 for 7 weeks where his stats catch up. Don't let 6-75-1 happen right after you've dumped him for some inferior player. He's still going to be a productive TE.

was dropped in a dynasty league tonight. Pretty shocked, seemed like a knee jerk reaction after a couple of rocky starts.

Do WR reception %'s take into account if the pass was catchable or not? I mean, if Brunell sucks really bad and bounces it off the ground four feet in front of Cooley, or four feet over his head...does that count as a target?

If he doesnt do anything this week vs Hou, then there might be reasons for concern.
A season consists of 16 individual events, a number which allows for a lot of variablilty; some games will be very good, some very poor, and some at average. Just like flipping a coin twice and having it come up tails, Cooley has had two poor statistical games. My point is that he is still as involved in the offense as he has been. The coin will start coming up heads if we are patient. The impatient owners, always chasing last week's 'hot' stats of some inferior WW pickup, are likely to not get a repeat of the inferior player's hot game and also miss out on Cooley's catchup games.

Yes. Target means he was the intended receiver, regardless of catchablility of the pass. There's been no change at QB since last year's 70% rate either. We're looking at a short-term aberration.

Agreed. I have no other choices other than to ride him out til I find a better option. I think Portis' absence has hurt the Was O overall. Even S Moss has been average.

The one week answer is obviously to keep Cooley unless you have a TE2 on your roster to start for you, since Witten is on his bye and Cooley has a nice matchup this week. For the season I'd rather own Witten.Being in a small league, do you think Witten will still be available after this week's games since he's on a bye? If Cooley would be your starter this week, you may want to try to postpone the move and do it next week if you can get away with it without losing Witten to another owner. If you have a good alternative to Cooley this week and you think another owner is likely to grab Witten first, I'd get him now.

Odd, doesn't look like the same QB. ;) I imagine once Portis gets back in there, things will start to look better.

I've seen a couple of the Redskins games, and on many of his targets, Brunell isn't coming close to getting him the ball. I especially remember one play last week where Cooley was wide open about 8 yards down the field, and Brunell under threw him by 5 feet. I think Brunell has been terrible from what I've seen which is killing Cooley.

I'd heed the advice, but I ended up with him in zero of a dozen leagues. I thought last years blow-up was the abberation.

Either way it goes, I wouldn't panic on him just yet.

Brunell obviously is having some deficiencies in going down the field and he knows this. He's targeting his dump off guys a lot.

...and if Brunell does get the hook soon (lets all pray), and Cambell comes in, TEs are usually the young QBs safety net.

This offense has nowhere to go but up at this point. I think you should consider Cooley, Moss, and Lloyd as good buy low candidates in redraft leagues, and possibly Portis too.

I have no idea whether any of these guys at this point will live up to their preseason projections, but I feel confident that all of them will likely outperform their value right now in trade.
