Source: Henry headed to Cincinnati to sign deal with Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals are close to reaching an agreement with free-agent receiver Chris Henry, a source told ESPN.com Monday night. Henry is en route from Charlotte, N.C., to Cincinnati to sign a contract with the team as early as Tuesday, the source said.

The Bengals refused comment on Henry when contacted by ESPN.com on Monday night.

"We don't comment on speculated player moves," Cincinnati team spokesman Jack Brennan said. "We only comment when something is done."

Henry, a former Bengal, was released by the team following his fifth arrest in three years for an alleged incident that took place on March 31. But charges of assault and criminal damaging were later dropped, making him eligible to play in 2008.

Still, the NFL suspended Henry for the first four games of the season.

But the Bengals had shown interest in Henry since the charges were dropped. There was a feeling in Cincinnati that the team may have overreacted in cutting its former third-round draft pick before the judicial system ran its course.

The Bengals have struggled in the past when Henry was not on the field. Last season the team was 2-6 while Henry served an eight-game suspension and 5-3 during the second half of the season with Henry in the lineup.

Henry has 88 career receptions for 1,370 yards and 17 touchdowns as Cincinnati's No. 3 receiver behind Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Recently, Henry told ESPN.com he vows to stay out of precarious situations if given another chance.

"I'm just focusing on what I need to be doing off the field so I can keep doing what I do on the field," Henry said. "I just have to be smart and handle myself like a professional at all times. Off the field, if I'll handle situations like I'm supposed to everything else will take care of itself."

Sunday's shoulder injury to Pro Bowl receiver Johnson, in addition to a recent hamstring injury to Houshmandzadeh and a toe injury in rookie Andre Caldwell, may have prompted the urgency to sign Henry this week. Although Henry will not be eligible to play until October, the team needs more capable bodies in practice and during the rest of the preseason.

James Walker covers the NFL for ESPN.com.

Hope the guy realizes this is it for him. Pro Bowl talent. 2 cent head. He's got no better shot to resurrect this career than in Cincy. If you can't succeed with Carson Palmer at QB, odds are you never will.

I will believe this signing when official. ESPN's Walker has seemed to get his info from Henry's agent (who has seemed to be blowing smoke in some of his past comments in regards to interest in Henry).

:wall: Seriously though... It makes you wonder if the CJ injury is serious. Then again, it could be that it really just hit home how thin they are at WR if here was an injury of significance to CJ and they are just now trying to bring back a guy that knows the system and has talent. This weekend, I just traded CJ away for Braylon Edwards and to move up a couple of spots in our 1st round in my keeper league. My concern about this is more about my dynasty league of which I have TJ and wondering of this impact on that.

Friggin Bengals!... As a homer, I jus wanna ;)

Marvin Lewis July 23, 2008

"I'm not interested," Lewis told reporters Tuesday, before the team's annual preseason luncheon. "I don't think it would be productive for our football team. You have to be a productive part to be an NFL player, and there's responsibilities to being an NFL player. It's a privilege, it's not a right. There's a lot that comes with being an NFL football player."

Ha! He'll never leran as long as the Bengals keep giving him second, third, fourth and fifth chances.I am going to give the Bengals the benefit of the doubt until it is official but if they do sign him after all the crap he's done then they deserve each other.

Unreal.

"That's all history now," Brown said. "We're going forward and trying to go forward with the kind of guys we can count on, the kind of guys who are not just good players but good citizens."

Somehow I get the feeling Henry's agent told the ESPN writer: Henry is flying to Cincy.

To which the ESPN presumed he's back with the Bengals. Only to find out he has a court date....to sign some paperwork.

(Rotoworld) Bengals re-signed suspended WR Chris Henry to a one-year contract, pending he passes a physical Tuesday.

Analysis: Henry is eligible to play in Week 5. Profootballtalk.com suggests the move is an indication that Chad Johnson may not be 100% early in the year. That's a situation to monitor. When Henry joins the active roster, he'll mostly threaten TE Ben Utecht's targets in the slot. The Bengals are admitting desperation here, but Henry can be an exceptional player on the field.

 :lmao: :own3d: :X

I think this is absolutely outrageous for a franchise to do this. I feel for the Bengals fans that have more dignity than their organization and would not want this loser part of their team.

All correct and accurate comments regarding their sad-sack waffling aside, if CJ's injury isn't serious, we have the highly-talented trio of WR's back, a healthy Chris Perry to compliment Rudi and Carson Palmer still under center. The Bengals are starting to look like they may be pesky this year, which angers me as they were pretty much the only non-behemoth on the Steelers' schedule.

Absolutely embarrassing. I'm all for giving someone a second chance but this is ridiculous. This team has lost whatever little bit of credibility it actually had.

How strange to have Henry in a dynasty league. I am firmly in the camp that this guy has top 5 talent, but will never-ever get it, despite how many "last chances" he gets. My plan at the end of last year was to deal him for whatever I could get this offseason, but his assault/suspension/release cycle rendered that plan moot. Six weeks ago, I literally couldn't have traded this guy for Charlie Frye. Cut to a week ago, where my plan was to simply cut bait on this guy and set him free with our dynasty cut-downs.

Geez, now what do I do? He's likely too valuable to cut, but too suspect to receive anything in trade value for. I suppose he's worth a roster spot, but immeditaly after his first good game, Henry owners will wonder how long it will be until he's arrested for: A) Strip club brawl, B) Illegal Cockfighting ring, C) Brandishing a pistol, in a brawl with police, after getting pulled over with drugs and underage girls drinking in his car while driving on a suspended license.

Not many options. I'll likely be bragging that I can't believe I'm starting this guy mid-season, in response to someone posting "maybe he finally gets it?" the day before his next (and last) arrest.

Ah, thug life at its best.

How moronic and ignorant can this team be? :shuked:

They have a need. So what.

You dont expose rookies like Jerome Simpson, Andre Cladwell, Clyde Logan and Marrio Urrutia to the return of this type of player. This type of player is why you have to make such an investment into WRs despite having talents like Henry and Johnson and TJ. It reeks of the stench of people afraid for their short term jobs and are not concerned with the long term welfare of the team. If your short term success rides upon the shoulders of Henry (and at the possible cost of negatively effecting serious young talent) you have already lost.

As a Steeler fan, I salute this continued idiocy by the Bengals.

"You sold a blind kid baseball cards!?"Seriously, how does that trade happen in dynasty? Was something else promised on the side?

This team is hilarious. Every time it seems like they've made the worst move possible, they find a way to top themselves.

People can change. If Henry really changes, he has as much talent as anyone in the league. I think it has a chance to be a great story.

I'm pretty sure PFT started this talk about Henry even before CJ got hurt.

EDIT: Yes, they first started the Henry talk on the 12th, which was before Chad's injury. Chad's injury may or may not be related to Henry's possible signing, but his injury is clearly not what started the prognostications. I think their poor performance on the field is what started it.

Very true.I was targeting Utecht in all my leagues this year as well as the FBG contest as he's only 5 bucks

Come on. We were all young and crazy once. Who amoung you hasn't been busted for Illegal Cockfighting a time or two?

It is the right the thing to do. Most people in Cincinnati are so uptight, I like seeing the Bengals stick it to them.
