Chris Mortensen Diagnosed with Throat Cancer (1 Viewer)

Is he or was he a smoker?
None of the reports say. Most throat cancers are smoking related, but like lung cancer, some are non-smokers.
HPV-related throat cancer would be my guess. Usually contracted by going down on someone with HPV. Undetected/untreated can lead to cancer.
Im very afraid of this. Ive snacked on a lot of clam.
Stage IV: cancers have often metastasized, or spread to other organs or throughout the body. Stage IV cancer can be treated by chemo, radiation, or surgery.

There is no stage 5.

Definitely a horrible turn of events. But not a death sentence. Thoughts and prayers with Mort and his family.
Yeah, I tend to think those treatment are more of a curse than a blessing. They sell false hope. I was thorough disgusted with the cancer treatment industry. Seemed a lot like snake oil to me.
Don't paint the entire effort with such a broad brush. The treatment and cure of many cancers has come a long way over the last couple decades.
I can just dive in without concern?

Stage 4. Man that sucks.

My mother is battling stage 4 cancer, anybody who has had to go through this knows how sucky cancer treatment is. In 6 months I've watched my mother deteriorate before my eyes.

If you have stage 4 cancer, chemo is pointless. I wish my mom had opted out of it and let the chips fall where they may.

If I'm ever diagnosed with inoperable advanced cancer, I will not do chemo.

Not pointless, but the success rate is only 2.1% (at best) which makes it roughly a 50-1 shot.

If I had stage 4 cancer I doubt I would undergo chemo, but you don't really know what you would do until you are faced with that situation and sometimes a remote chance seems better than no chance at all.

I don't think that guy was trying to be crass bringing up HPV related throat cancer. It wasn't any more or less inappropriate than asking if he was a smoker.

Straight from the Mayo Clinic:

Factors that can increase your risk of throat cancer include:

Tobacco use, including smoking and chewing tobacco
Excessive alcohol use
A virus called human papillomavirus (HPV)
A diet lacking in fruits and vegetables
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Michael Douglas really opened the conversation about this when he claimed his stage 4 throat cancer was caused from the HPV virus, which he inferred he got from his wife. It turns out he actually had tongue cancer, which can also be caused from eating HPV seasoned fish.

Funny but incorrect quote from Douglas:

"This particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papillomavirus], which actually comes about from cunnilingus. But yeah, it's a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer. And if you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it." :lmao:
I am no expert, but Stage IV throat cancer isn't a death sentence. My uncle had stage 4 throat cancer around 2002 and went through months of surgery and treatment at John Hopkins. He is alive and well, been cancer free for over a decade now.

Someone with Mort's level of fame and money will no doubt seek out the best oncologists in the country and receive the best care available. Also, the "expected" survival rate for throat cancer varies depending on the type. According to www.cancer.org the survival rates for the four different types of throat cancer at Stage IV range from 24%-44%.

Cancer is a ##### of a disease that at some point will affect most families, unfortunately. The good news is awareness, advances in detection and diagnostic technologies, more experienced providers, and new and improved treatment options are increasing the survival rates of most cancers. The bad news is that there are no guarantees, no cures, no easy roads to remission. It likely will be a path fraught with physical, emotional, and financial stress for the patient and their family.

I am sure Mort will be fine in 6-12 months, but still, I wish him and his family the best.

I'm one of those 2.1% (so far), though mine is lung. I did both chemo and radiation. I'll never do chemo again - that #### made me so sick - though radiation was a breeze for me. I've talked to others who have had the opposite experience.

my mom lived five years with stage 4 and chemo. Most of those years were good although she did deteriorate quickly the last six months. But she got to see my son until he was almost three years old.

Cancer treatment, while still really harsh in many cases, is improving both in efficacy and "tolerance" all the time. Many fewer cancer diagnosis's are the death sentence they once were.

Here's hoping that Mort fights hard and kicks cancer's ###.

Sorry to hear about your mom.

Lots of great jokes in here about the dying guy.
Dying?Way to stay positive...
Oh sorry. The very sick and maybe dying guy. Resume the funny!
You think Mort is reading these responses or something?
No. But I personally lost my mom to cancer and my wife's grandmother this year. My best friend's mom is going under the knife for exploratory surgery (breast cancer 25 years ago is feared to be back). Cancer isn't something to joke about. It just isn't. It's terrible.

I had an uncle, and my mom go in the past 2 years. Mom fought and fought. Then died. My uncle just said, nope...I'm done. I tend to think that's how I'll do it when it's my turn. It has really added an urgency to my life to be honest. One of the reasons I quit fantasy football to be honest. Life is way too precious. I need to get my #### together.

I read 44% of people get some type of cancer in their lifetime. That scares the #### out of me. And 26% die from cancer.

Wouldn't suprise me at all. But hey, the food and water and air are just fine. Let's deregulate some more, because...Murica!

most of it is just due to the fact that due to scientific advancements people are living longer and that's when cancer becomes prevalent. But those other factors don't help.

My mom was 62. My uncle was 65. Grandma was 91 though. My sister also had it at 24.

Yes, cancer sucks. Most of us have had someone close deal with the bull#### that it is. I don't think anyone is making a joke about cancer though. Some light-hearted banter is always welcome though
