Since everybody seems to have an opinion, I just made it a poll.

I'd rip on him, but Motte is probably too raw and has no second pitch. I'm a Ryan Franklin man myself. :X
LaRussa doesn't trust young players to carry a bucket of balls unless he's without another option. Although he would be better as a setup man, Franklin will likely start the season as the closer. Whether or not he can keep it is another story. Motte >>>>>> Perezhth

This was my conclusion as well. No way Motte sniffs the 9th.Franklin getting no love. :(

 People are dumb.

From the Internet!

Franklin will most likely start as the Closer. I think Motte is going to be better than Perez, but that is just my opinion. Today, Motte pitched the 9th for the save. He threw his fastball, change, and slider for strikes.

The longer Franklin can hold the role, the better Motte's chance at taking it over, I tend to think. If Motte can get in some work, he'll have a shot at stepping into the role. I don't know if TLR will go straight to him with such little experience, though.

The guy was a catcher until 2007. I just don't see how he suddenly closes games in the majors regularly.

Your St. Louis Cardinals: catchers pitch, pitchers play in the outfield, outfielders play 2B and 3B, and a closer drafted #1 a few years ago isn't given shot to close.

How can he even be in the conversation? At least they're not coming off a historically bad season from their bullpen. Oh, wait.Great off-season.

Joe Strauss: Chris Perez has had three pretty good outings in a row and is "trending upward." Same with Jason Motte.

about 1 hour ago from web Joe Strauss: Ryan Ludwick does not look like himself and is "tight" after a rigid weightlifting program this past offseason.

about 1 hour ago from web Joe Strauss: may explore trade route for 2B. Points out that in 2005, they acquired Tony Womack late in spring.

about 1 hour ago from web Joe Strauss: organization will not sign a FA 2B, such as Grudzielanek or Durham.

about 1 hour ago from web Joe Strauss on our radio show: plug soon could be pulled on Schumaker at 2B...if so, Brendan Ryan or Joe Thurston next in line.

Why they didn't go after Orlando Hudson is beyond me. There's your leadoff guy right there!

Why Ryan or Thurston next instead of Tyler Greene?

Yeah, that doesn't make any sense to me either. Greene is having a great spring. They should start putting him at 2B more. I don't think Ryan will be anything better than a UT IF in the bigs. As far as Thurston goes, I don't know much about him. If Schumaker can't make the transition to 2B, I don't think Rasmus will be on the roster for opening day. I think Tony wants to use Rasmus in the Schumaker role from last year, spot starts at each OF position, and as pinch hitter and defensive replacement for Duncan, when he plays. As far as the closer role, I think Motte has the most talent and may end up with the job. Also, Josh Kinney is a sleeper as well. He has pitched in big games before ('06 playoffs), and he seems to be healthy this season for the 1st time in 2 years. Perez still seems to be having some control problems. I just don't see him being the closer for any long length of time this season.
