Chris Polk, RB (HOU) (1 Viewer)

The Texans are a candidate to possibly bolster their running back position this week by adding Todd Gurley, the draft's top player at the position. In the meantime, they've added some help from free agency. The team has agreed to terms with running back Chris Polk, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. Polk recently became available after the Eagles rescinded his restricted free agent offer.

It's not a huge surprise that the Texans would have interest in Polk. He fits best in the one-cut zone scheme that has helped to make Arian Foster into a star over the last five years. Polk won't be promised a roster spot, but he can compete with Alfred Blue.

This is a worthwhile flier for the Texans. Polk has averaged 4.7 yards-per-carry in 57 career attempts, although he's not much of a help in the passing game.

ESPN's Dianna Marie Russini said to "look for" Chris Polk "to be the first one to see if he can hold down the fort" while Arian Foster (groin) is out.
Per Russini, the Texans were so interested in Polk that they were considering trading for him when he was with the Eagles. Polk ended up getting released, and Houston pounced on the fourth-year UDFA. Coming out of Washington, Polk was viewed as a day-two prospect but wasn't selected due to injury concerns. Polk has solid size at 5'11/222 and is a straight-line north-south runner with a thick frame. He's averaged 4.7 YPC on 57 career carries with six touchdowns. Aug 5 - 1:22 PM

From HoustonTexans.com (8.8.2005):

Once both fields got calm again, the two teams went back to work. The Texans run game picked up some nice gains with Chris Polk and Kenny Hilliard registering a couple of solid runs. On Hilliard’s last run, he barreled over a Redskins defender. Now, every run that I saw from Hilliard v. the Redskins this week finished nearly the exact same way - the former LSU product sending a message to any Redskin defender that dare tackle him. Well, the Redskins two defensive backs in the vicinity didn’t take kindly to that action and threw Hilliard to the turf. That incensed Texans OT Aaron Adams who then sprinted down the field and hammered the defensive back which set off the third fight of the day.
RB Chris Polk returned to practice today and had a couple of solid runs down on the goal line for a touchdown. O’Brien noted after the workout that he saw Polk as a three down running back, so there’s confidence in what the former Philadelphia Eagle can do.

Rotoworld:

Texans coach Bill O'Brien believes Chris Polk can be a "good three-down back."

O'Brien has also talked up Alfred Blue as having the skills to play on third down, but it's notable nonetheless. The way O'Brien has presented things publicly, anything is possible as Polk, Blue and Jonathan Grimes jockey for committee position in the absence of Arian Foster. This will shake out on the preseason field.

From HoustonTexans.com:

9. Chris Polk impressed with a catch againstBenardrick McKinney that went for a TD. Polk, though, didn’t get everyone. A moment later Polk had a pass broken up by Bullough way downfield.
23. One other key play for the offense, on a 3rd and 1 drill later in the practice, Chris Polk ran over a defensive back, believe it was Charles James, for a first down. The former Washington Husky product has made significant strides toward potentially get more and more reps at RB in Arian Foster’s stead.

They had good things to say about him and HBO featured him. That being said, he's usually the 3rd or 4th RB to play in the rotation during games, so the proof is in the pudding until they change his usage.

I don't think Polk is now worth a third round draft pick, but this did ##### up my ears. Despite whatever they chose to show Polk do on Hard Knocks, Blue still seems like the primary guy on the ground. Polk's 3.8 YPC isn't as sound as Blue's 5.3 (four less carries than Polk).

But Polk's ability in the passing game (leads all HOU receivers in targets, receptions, yards, and 1st down receptions) makes me think he can be a lock for 3rd and passing down situations. He may arguably have more long term value this season than Blue right now, and could be an interesting flex play in PPR if he continues to shine.

Bang bang.
