If they signed Simms, and they keep Rattay, who I feel has been underrated, can't we expect for Griese to be let go?

This was pretty much a foregone conclusion about a month after Simms took over

That's actually a smart move by Simms. Get a one year deal now, play well as the starter, then cash in on the possible capless year.

Gruden may have told him he was the future and to get something done now, if only a stop gap.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but since Simms will have only been in the league for 4 years after next year, he would not qualify to be an UFA...that would require 6 years??

Except that players have to be 6 year veterans to become unrestricted free agents in the capless '07, and Simms won't qualify. He'll be stuck as property of the Bucs.

Simms signed his one year tender so he's no longer an RFA. Assuming the CBA doesn't get extended, he'll also be an RFA the next two years due to the extension of free agency from 4 to 6 years.Sweet!

i'd be real surprised if the Bucs can drop Griese without taking a huge cap hit. i don't know the numbers right off hand, but i remember they were pretty large.

Local radio is lying to you.
I don't remember them offhand either, but I remember that his contract was set up so they could release him this offseason and save money rather than lose it. It basically put Griese in the position that Simms is now in: Play for a big contract, or get out.

Griese has a fairly low base salary, but is due around $8million in a roster bonus that counts against the current cap. When he is released, that roster bonus obviously won't e paid out and thus will not appear on the cap figures. I fully expect him to test out free agency and then come back to the Bucs when no one else wants him.

I would love him on the Bucs as a backup QB. As a starter, I would prefer him be on a team playing against the Bucs. He is far too errant to lead a team anywhere in the playoffs.By contrast, I think in Simms the Bucs have a potential championship-level QB.

If the CBA is signed and Simms has a great year, then he can cash in for the big payday.
