Christian Ponder's targets don't show for workouts

Surely, the attendance – or lack of attendance – on the first day of player-run practices for the Minnesota Vikings isn’t a reflection on the new quarterback.

Christian Ponder, the team’s first-round draft pick, has been looking forward to working out with his new teammates. The plan was set for those sessions to be held in Florida, at the IMG facility in Bradenton, but when things got rolling Ponder didn’t have many of the players you’d expect for him to target.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, wide receivers Sidney Rice, Percy Harvin and Bernard Berrian, along with tight end Visanthe Shiancoe and running back Lorenzo Booker failed to show. The kicker here is all had been expected. All apparently had a variety of reasons for not making it .

Granted, Bradenton is a long way from the Land of 10,000 Lakes, but Ponder was left to throw to targets the fans have to hope aren’t his primary reads whenever his chance does arise to play.

“I thought it would be hard and probably should have had better planning," Ponder. "We'll definitely do it again and hopefully a bunch more guys will show up. I talked to a few guys, some other guys we couldn't get a hold of. We got some good work in. To be around some of the guys was good for me.”

Tight end Kyle Rudolph, the team’s second-round draft pick, was in attendance. Another workout is scheduled for today.

Ponder's quote "I thought it would be hard and probably should have had better planning," Ponder said of scheduling the informal minicamp right after the Memorial Day weekend. "We'll definitely do it again and hopefully a bunch more guys will show up. ... I talked to a few guys, some other guys we couldn't get a hold of. ... We got some good work in. For people with the free time and financial resources they have, is this really relevant?

That's my thought too...every weekend since January for most of these teams has been a "Memorial Day Weekend"...it really struck me that he couldn't even get a hold of some of these guys (not blaming Ponder).

On the positive side for the Vikes (and this is a small positive considering the other stuff), I would think you would be fairly pleased with Ponder taking the bull by the horns and at least attempting leadership in this fashion. Seems like a good thing to me.

The others not showing....well that is a different story all together.

I've seen footage of these player workouts. They are doing calisthenics together. I don't believe Ponder would gain any more timing with Rice or Shiancoe by running routes at 3/4 speed than he would by having dinner with them. It's a nice PR story for players to get together and work out, but I am not seeing much of a competitive advantage.

Ouch. I'm loving watching the dumpster fire that has been the Vikes in the last year.
How quick things turn!
Yea the fact that I'm a Lion fan makes it even sweeter. Being on the outside looking in feels good. All in all it's not a huge deal but still says something... You're not going to show up a couple weeks before the season starts and expect to be competitive.

It may be nothing. While many of these players aren't holding down 9-5 jobs in the offseason, this is a big week for summer vacations as schools are letting out. I'm not sure of the marital/daddy status of the missing guys, but it wouldn't surprise me for some of them to skip what may amount to a meet-n-greet in shorts in favor of some family time.

On the other hand, it could also be a "who do you think you are, rookie" moment. If he hasn't been named the starter and many still expect them to bring in a vet to at least compete with him, he could be coming off a bit strong for some of his teammates.

I don't read too much into it either way...yet.

Don't worry kids, Childress is finally gone so things will be better.

We all have our Millens to slay (metaphorically speaking  )

The fact that you're a Lions fan shouldn't be sweet at all. hth

It's been a very rough year for fans of Minnesota(or as Paul Allen says, "Loserville, USA") teams.

An issue like this is nothing compared to the new stadium battle right now. I'm more worried about whether we'll even have a team or not. :kicksrock:

I took care of that. I sent Zygi a video message, he knows what will happen to him if he moves the Vikes. The Norm Green incident will be nothing compared to what I will do to him.
