Chromebook -- Highly recommend (1 Viewer)

One of the companies I work for has decided that their overhead costs should be crazy low. Everyone works from home and the company issued laptops are chrome books since all work is done on google apps.

That's cool. What kind of company? What Google apps? I'm guessing Google Drive is pretty useful since it can be a substitute for Office.

Checking back in and after a few months with a chrome book I think it was a great buy for my wife who uses it almost exclusively for surfing the internet and mostly spending time on facebook. We are even considering getting a 2nd one for around the house.

Internet Marketing and Media. Google Docs, Gmail, and Chat are used constantly. A little Skype but mostly Google only.

Just put in a pre-order for a Samsung Chromebook 2 for $399 - due to be released on May 15.

The quality of the displays was the only thing holding me back from these, but the Chromebook 2 will have a full 1080p display.

I'm in when they put a 1080 display on an 11 inch.

For those of you with both a tablet and a chromebook, which do you use more often?

It seems that the main differences are that tablets are lighter, smaller, and therefore more convenient to carry around with you, while chromebooks have keyboards and are therefore better for composing anything longer than tweet-length prose.

It also seems that tablets, even the $229 Nexus 7, have better screen resolution than chromebooks (other than the Pixel).

So for watching movies or just browsing the web (without typing anything), it seems that a tablet would be better. But for more of an all-purpose device that might be used for typing as well as reading, it seems that a chromebook would be better, unless you're going to carry it around with you when you leave the house.

Is that about right?

Posted this in the tablet thread, but because of the dock it's sort of like a chrome book.

Woot is selling the Asus Vivo tab 10.1" with the docking station (full keyboard laptop functionality) for 229 right now. Thoughts?

I have an iPad and a Chromebook. I use them for mostly different reasons. Chromebook is for browsing mostly. iPad is for apps/games. Use both for email.

Single platform amongst all devices is gonna be great for developers. TV, Chromcast, Phones, Tablets, chrome book, chrome browser, and now android TV. Other home automation devices probably in play as well.

Just announced... Android apps coming to Chromebook
I definitely think a Chromebook will be my future go-to. We're still a couple years away I think from these devices being all they can be, but I'm looking forward to it.

Acer's got one coming in August that looks pretty darn good. 13.3 inches, 1080 resolution, 4 GB ram, 32 GB SSD. No one has hit all of these specs at once yet, but thats what I always wanted.

How has this worked out for you?

Trying to decide between this and a HP 14 (with 4g). Will use it mostly as a laptop replacement and to remotely access my desktop when traveling. So, it doesnt have to be spectacular, but I am concerned about the display and the relatively low amt of memory (HD and RAM)

ETA: Just saw that new Chromebooks are coming out this Summer that will use Intels Core i3 CPU. Hoping there is a 13-14" full HD among them

I work for two companies that use 100% web based tools for business. Google apps, sales force, zen desk, etc.

Both issue Macs to employees. There is definitely an opportunity for these machines to enter the enterprise.

Was actually just looking into moving my entire office into these (graphic design macs notwithstanding).

It's a constant PITA maintaining the windows machines as, lets face it, non technical employees really manage to gum up the machines after a while. The biggest challenge i'm finding is the education and reluctance to change within the office. It was a near riot when i moved everyone from Outlook to gmail (via google apps).

I still find Drive rather lacking as it's search function is FUBAR. And i dont like how everyone can generate their own folder structure in "My Drive". If thats the case then search needs to be extremely powerful. Odd that a company founded on search managed to screw up the Drive search function

What is wrong with the drive search function?
maybe i'm using it wrong, but there is no search refinement, at least not in a useful manner. If i know the exact file name or an exact piece of it, then it finds the file/folder right away. no problem with that.

But what if I want to find a file within a specific folder? Or what if i know it's a Sheet file that was saved last week but i don't remember the name? Or what about a Doc file that a colleague sent me last month but i don't know the name?

Also hate how the folders in MyDrive do not remember how i last accessed them. Every time i go back into drive I have to click back through the folder tree to get to anything.

Lastly, the infinite scroll is funky. Sometimes it reverts back to the initial "1 page" view and i have to start scrolling again

So AmEx is currently doing a spend $350 at HP and get $75 back promotion on some of its cards.. I'm pretty tempted by this at sub $300 all in.

First off, does anyone have the HP and what do they think of it?

Second, if I mostly use my laptop for e-mail, web browsing, and music this looks like a slam dunk right? Just load up Google Play with my iTunes library and everything will be in the cloud yes?

Just trying to see if I'm missing anything and if the glowing reviews are legit.

thx. only seeing news on the 11' version

just ordered the HP 14 4G version. Figured that eventually someone will come out with a 13in+, 1080p, 4gb ram+, backlit keyboard, 32gb SSD, but who knows when. Test drove this model in store this weekend and it was fine for my uses

I had that 14" HP for a couple weeks. Was too big and bulky to be portable, and the screen resolution was lousy. I returned it.

I really want a chromebook but havent found one that suits my needs yet. Excellent screen resolution, backlit keyboard, portable.

Doh :homer:

screen looked ok in store, but i didnt try to watch movies on it. Don't mind the bulk as i'll take the tradeoff for a larger screen size. what about the display bothered you the most? Movies, pixelation, refresh rate, something else?

Picked up a not so highly recommended hp pav 14 4gb (the black one) with the 4.5 hour battery life. It was on clearance at my local Staples for 220. They were down to the floor model which I am now typing on. 10% off for taking the display made the price 198. Good buy I think.
Three months later my daughter uses it as much as me. She prefers the chromebook to her Ipad for most of what she does. Keyboards are good. So I powerwashed it and gave it to her after deciding to upgrade to the Samsung 13" with HD display. I got it for 329, open box. I also picked up an Asus Chromebox scratch and dent for $99. It has a little celeron haswell in it. It's snappy on my 50" tv -- video smooth and sharp. I upgraded memory to 6 gb. I sold my sister my windows 8.1 desktop for $100. It was a seriously under-powered amd quad core 1.5 but only 6 months old. Guess I'm all in on Chrome OS for now. I'm probably going to build a budget gaming desktop to get windows back in the house, but the truth is I really don't need it.

Wow, that Chromebox is pretty cool. I may consider something like this.
Of the two new devices the box is highly recommended. Like much of the chrome os part of the google ecosystem it has glitches and limitations. The simplicity appeals to me. I currently have it in my bedroom hardwired to the router, an LG 24" monitor and a JVC 47" HD tv. I'm watching a Netflix documentary on the tv and reading the ffa on the monitor. It's no htpc, but like a chromebook, it does what it does very well. Booting a dual display desktop at chromebook speed is a win. I don't miss the slow Lenovo I traded away for this. Youtube for reviews of chromebox.

Mini-rant - All my Chrome optimism has lead me down a path towards disappointment.

Chromebook #1; Acer 11" for $199 - Keyboard design was a technological pimple. Gave it to my son for his freshman year of college and in retrospect I feel kind of guilty.

Chromebook #2 : HP 14" - Was not compatible with Chromecast - back to Best Buy you go. ... How the eff is a chromebook not compatible with chromecast?!

In both cases the display was subpar. Cannot imagine trying to Netflix binge on either device. Luckily I did not buy one of those $1300 Chromebooks that came with a paltry data plan for three years that neither Google nor Verizon ( I think it was a Verizon promotion) would honor. Details are fuzzy, but I'm sure you can google it ... Might want to bing it for the sake of due diligence.

Chromecast - I've owned two and I've spent more time searching google for problem resolutions than I have soaking up content on a chromecast. Roku is infinitely better than Chromecast.

... Nexus on the other hand, is beautiful. I replaced my Kindle Fire (original version) with a Nexus 7 tablet many months ago for $199. Best device I've ever owned.

Am I in the right thread?

ETA: Went back to Firefox too. Seems a little more pleasant.

Color me a chromebook evangelist after only a few days

You are probably a little early to arrive at the Chromebook party. It's a relatively immature OS with some definite shortcomings. But as others have stated in much more detail, Chrome OS and Chromebooks specifically do some things very well. And as long as you know and can live with their limitations going in, i don't think you'll be disappointed with the latest (2014) batch

To your specific gripes,

the 2 models you mention are relatively early ones and things have improved drastically this year. Also the HP 14 you mention is the Pavillion, and not the current HP 14. I was casting to my living room within minutes of unboxing the HP 14

the pixel and verizon mess, it's been fixed. any search will give you details

Display, i honestly cant see anything wrong with this 14" 780p on my HP 14

Chromecast  this was so easy to set up that my wife set up the one in our basement. Not a single issue since installing 3 in our house

There are issues and limitations a mentioned: No backlit keyboard, needs more RAM, need a verizon 4g option in the new releases, using drive and the built in file manager take some getting used to

Always wanted one. Really like the idea of it, a premium Chromebook. I think prices on that kind of thing will come down quite a bit, so I'm waiting.

My oldest killed his laptop (Dell Inspiron - yes, never again)... so we are looking for a new one and I'm possibly looking at a Chromebook.

We would switch around the home computers (yes plural, I spoil my family) so that my wife uses the Chromebook if I go that way, so here is what she needs it for:

Internet surfing

Amazon.com - must be the full site - she hates the mobile site

Facebook

email

e-books - more of an Amazon related questions

Shutterfly and other picture type websites - can she upload her pictures through the Chromebook?

Her concern is that since it is app based that stuff like amazon takes you to their mobile site instead of the full website. And since I've never even touched one of these things...... opening up for answers to the questions that very well might be stupid but I don't screw up purchases for the wife. I'm not that dumb.

Chromebooks display full websites.
:goodposting:

This is not like a phone... it runs a full version of Chrome, so all websites work as normal. Chrome itself has apps (independent of operating system). Don't let that confuse the issue. Using Chrome on a ChromeBook is no different than using it on a Windows machine.

So I'm finding that as I switch off and on using the Acer I bought last year, I'm liking the display less and less. It's not a deal breaker, but the choice we were all faced with last year (nice exterior design, nice screen, sub-par specs otherwise vs Better specs with a worse screen) kind of stinks. They need to resolve those without changing the price point (much.).

But machine specific screen issues aside, I still love Chromebooks as a platform.
