Cinci will stun people tomorrow in the NFL draft (1 Viewer)

I feel there will be many unhappy Cinci fans tomorrow when they make a head-scratching pick. I remember the year they drafted Levi Jones, a solid pick in retrospect, but at the time a pick many thought was much too early for him. Watch Cinci draft a guy like Devin Thomas, and then watch what happens with Chad Johnson. Just sayin'.

Naah. LB was a huge problem last year. This year with Odell and Brooks drafting a top DT like Ellis should be the pick.

Here's why I think they could draft a guy like Mendenhall:From PFT:

MARVIN WINS BACK THE LOCKER ROOMPosted by Mike Florio on April 24, 2008, 6:48 p.m. As the tug-o-war between the Cincinnati Bengals and receiver Chad Johnson continues with the piece of the rope with the strip of an old T-shirt tied around it not moving from the midpoint between the two sides, the Bengals have scored a major victory among the other players on the team.Per a league source, coach Marvin Lewis won back the locker room with his Tuesday verbal #####-slapping of Johnson.“He’s stated without an opportunity to go to a different team and a new contract, he wasn’t going to play,” Lewis said to the media two days ago. “I think he’s a man of his word. He says he’s not going to play, so don’t play.”It’s a significant development for Lewis, who had gradually squandered the support of the other players by coddling Chad. The low point came in January 2006, when Lewis did nothing in response to Johnson’s halftime meltdown in the locker room.Regardless of whether Johnson punched Lewis or receivers coach Hue Jackson or Johnson had Jackson in a headlock or Jackson had Johnson in a headlock or the Iron Sheik had Hacksaw Jim Duggan in a sleeper hold, the incident marred the twelve-minute intermission of a playoff game that the Bengals were leading at the end of the second quarter, preventing the team from maximizing the available time to make adjustments aimed at also leading the game at the end of the fourth.Per the source, one player’s reaction was that Lewis should have gone even farther. “He should have told Chad that he’d pack up his stuff and send it to him,” the player said, “or that he’d just go ahead and send it all to Canton.”
I think that before the Bengals can win with talent, they have to develop some character. Lewis seems to finally realize this, and the team seems to be behind him, and could therefore use the #1 pick to send an "up yours Ocho Cinco" message.

An RB is an up yours to a WR?eta: I think Stewart or Mendenhall are candidates here. If my nutty notion that Stewart could be RB1 happens, this would be a perfect scenario. Stewart has no character concerns at all, and McFadden will not be a Bengal. Period. Of course Mendenhall is apparently as much a threat to McFadden as Stewart is.

Send it with some pepto. He'll need it if he has to sit out all year.

It would be to 85. It would signal the seriousness of the earlier call by Lewis that they will be running the ball more. Thus resulting in less for Johnson. As much as Johnson says he wants to win, he's lying. All he wants is to see his face on SportsCenter.

I think a RB as right of a pick as defense. But then I've argued that a bunch over the last couple days.

Yeah, mostly with me. I think everyone knows where I stand on this topic. My thought is, we can compete with the RB stable that we have, we cannot compete with the defense that we have. The only exception is if they know for sure that Rudi, Perry and Irons are done this year. If that is the case, I might be able to live with RB, but I still don't think I would like it.

I still think the best pick for them is Ellis, but believe he'll be gone by their pick.

I am starting to prepare for this scenario as well, unfortunately. Especially since most people think he will be there, makes me almost positive that he won't. If he isn't they better be doing everything possible to trade back. I am almost at the point where I could justify taking Mayo at #9 if forced to stay there. Rivers is nice from a hard worker, character perspective, but I just don't get the feeling he could be a superstar.Would Mayo at #9 be enough of a stunner to fit this category?

Actually I have been hering that Mayo has been moving up the boards slow but steady, so it would be a slight stunner but not huge. IMO

Marvin needs someone that can contribute NOW, or he may well be on his way out of town. I don't care how much everyone says Mike Brown loves him - they've got a brutal schedule, and 4-12 is not out of the realm of possibility. Drafting a WR at #9 or throwing a RB onto that pile is not going to have the necessary impact.

You're right that a WR wouldn't, but a RB certainly would. One way to help a poor defense is to keep it off the field with a ball control running game.

Btw I'm shocked they took one of the two guys they were projected to take in like every mock :wall:

Though I wish we'd have given the Pats the same offer the Saints did and got Ellis *sigh*

I guess they could have taken someone projected for the third round or something but position-wise it seems like the only thing that would have been surprising would have been a QB/TE/K. Seems like they had needs across the board.
