Classic Cars: 1966-1977 Ford Bronco, 70's Jeep CJ5/7, muscle cars (1 Viewer)

In all seriousness Otis, do it. Don't listen to the people tell you that these are POS. While these aren't really my cup of tea (I'm more of a classic muscle car person) I still think they are cool cars. It sounds like you want to take it down on the beach and perhaps do a bit of off-roading with it. If it were me I would buy one that has been mechanically upgraded, but needs body work. To the people saying that it will be a money pit, the car will at the very least hold it's value and you will get some enjoyment out of it.

This is why I am contemplating it. Worst case I don't lose much money on it and I have some fun. That's a win.

I'm not likely to go offroading with it much. But top down, doors off, on a nice day, just cruising around town maybe smoking a cigar with some tunes playing and my 5 year old in the back seat? Sounds awesome.

I'm actually starting to lean Jeep CJ7/YJ/TJ, if only due to cost. I can get that same experience I'm looking for, at a fraction of the cost, out of one of these. Rather than plunking down 30k, I can plunk down 10k or less and get what I'm looking for. If I still have the Bronco bug in 5-10 years, maybe I do it then instead. We'll see.

You will have Maintenance with all.

I would steer clear of YJ. I have owned all 3. If you want AC and a better ride then go TJ. If you just want something to run around in on a pretty day go CJ.

You can get a beautiful low mileage CJ for under 10k. A TJ under 10k is doable also but I feel the CJs hold their value better due to the classic feel.

Nothing wrong with the YJ I just prefer the CJ and TJ over them. P.S. Steer clear of the 4 cylinder. If you get a YJ or TJ go with the 4.0L engine.

If you plan on doing off-roading which can be a blast see other jeep thread as you will be going in a different direction.

Warning Jeep are an addiction. Just empty every pocket.

This is my leaning. I like the classic feel -- I don't want a plasicky late 80s thing; what drew me to the Broncos, and now the CJ7s, is the 1970's classic sheet metal and metal dashes, etc. If I can get a beautiful one for under 10k, I'd be thrilled. If I can get one for 8k, through in a couple grand in a new family roll cage and whatever other extras I need, I'd be thrilled.

And yeah, I'm not offroading. I'm doing nothing fancy. I'll tinker and do some upgrades for looks and fun and convenience and comforts, but I'll just be cruising on pavement for fun on nice sunny days, not a whole lot else.

Be careful about rust and people doing suspension work their selves. I have been burned by both. If you are willing to ship one in look on pirate4x4, jeeps unlimited, jeep forum, eBay. Tons of examples out there.

Man you find really bad cars to get expensively obsessive over. If you're going to blow that much on car, don't you want a nice one?
What's a nice one? Out of curiosity.
Agree, what a POS for $30k.Just a few off the bat:

Mid 60's style Lincoln Continental with suicide doors

Late 70's Vette

Mid 60's Mustang

90's Acura NSX

60's GTO

60's Camaro

70 Challenger or Chevelle

I can go on forever in comparison to that hideous POS you picked out which I doubt (or at least hope) you have no intention on buying.
Have you not figured out that other people have their own tastes? I understand of you don't like something but Ahhh never mind.

I'm leaning hard towards the Jeep CJ7 now, due to pricing mostly, but also cool factor and fun. But guys keep peppering me with e-mails and pictures about Broncos they're selling.

Just got this pic this morning of a fully restored one. He wants 28k for it is the only problem. But it looks damn sweet...

The Broncos are sweet, but I just don't see how they're worth this much more than the Jeeps. I'm going to stick CJ7 for now (for anyone interested in the details, lots of discussion going on over in icon's JEEP thread. I'm hot on the trail of this 1980 Cj7 Renegade:
