Long term I would say average at best. He has no wide recievers outside of Smith and he is getting older and angrier by the day. The panthers look to be in total reset mode and I doubt very seriously they are going to drop the coin to pay Dwill when his time comes next year. Its all pretty frustrated as a fan. Clausen looked good at times in the preseason but he still is a rookie with basically no wr's. Not worth rostering now. Maybe in a couple years but certainly not now.what is Clausen's longterm outlook? please no snarky panther homer comments ( i know you guys are disappointed right now).
That is funny because? But I thought Hunter Cantwell was ahead of Clausen and Moore was entrenched![]()
I just have to laugh because of the way Clausen was summarily dismissed even though the evidence was to the contrary. Moore had (and might still have) every chance to earn this job, but the team didn't bring in Clausen to be a 3rd stringer behind Hunter Cantwell, yet when that was how the depth chart looked a few days into camp people took that story and ran with it as though it was some kind of admonition against Clausen and proof that he would be a bust.I'm no Notre Dame apologist, in fact I root against them most of the time, but I can't fathom how this kid didn't get more respect from pundits coming out of college considering the crazy man love someone like Sam Bradford got in spite of a bum shoulder, and playing in a non pro style offense. Clausen is big, strong, technically sound, played in an NFL style offense, faced adversity, and wasn't handed anything like he would have been as a Top 5 pick. Will he be good this year? I highly doubt it. Will be be a great pro? No one knows the answer to that unless they have a crystal ball. But I had him as my top rookie QB in our dynasty rookie rankings from jump street and will stick to it.That is funny because? But I thought Hunter Cantwell was ahead of Clausen and Moore was entrenched![]()
I see it as a potential positive for the running game, but hard to say this early.Maybe there is a silver lining in this for Deangelo/Stewart owners. The Panthers will have to rely on the running game to help the young QB now, whereas before, they were pass-happy in the redzone for some reason.
The only way it's a potential positive in my opinion is because it's hard to imagine things being any worse for Williams and Stewart.Of course, they could both continue losing Red Zone snaps to Mike Goodson. Until that changes and they get on the field more often it may not matter who the QB is.I see it as a potential positive for the running game, but hard to say this early.Maybe there is a silver lining in this for Deangelo/Stewart owners. To whom? There is really nobody else that is a wr. Lafell is hurt, Getts drops balls, Rosario has hands of stone and Armanti Edwards looks as if he has never seen a football before. This lies fully at the feet of the panther brass. they had chances to upgrade at wr and refused to do so. Now teams load the box all three downs and just crush our offense.Davidson shouldnt be coaching high school football. For the Panther's homers, is it safe to say that Clausen will spread the ball around more than Moore...Moore seemed to lock-on to Smith, whereas Clausen definitely seemed to spread the ball around more.I'll hang up and listen.
Amen and amen.Davidson shouldnt be coaching high school football.
I agree with the point about Williams, but.....if they have Stewart and Goodson and ARE in rebuild, I don't understand why they wouldn't trade D'Angelo? The panthers look to be in total reset mode and I doubt very seriously they are going to drop the coin to pay Dwill when his time comes next year. Not sure about this. I think this is a worse situation for Smith than Delhomme was. I can't imagine Clausen racking up but 100 or so yards passing per game, and I imagine much of that going to RB's and TE's. Seems like a nasty situation.Considering how terrible Matt Moore has played I don't think this is a huge hit to Smith's value. The QB play can't get a whole lot worse.

Why would you think he can't do better than what Moore has done through two weeks? Not sure about this. I think this is a worse situation for Smith than Delhomme was. I know Moore wasn't tearing it up, but like Delhomme at least he was intent on feeding the ball to Smith and would hang in the pocket long enough to let some routes to develop. At least he had some chemistry with him. Rookie QBs are like frightened little animals in the pocket. I'm afraid the only catches Smith are going to nab now are quick throws after the snap and a slant here and there. Carolina will lean even more on the run game than they already do.Why would you think he can't do better than what Moore has done through two weeks? Not sure about this. I guess it comes down to what you expected from Moore in the first place. This was going to be a run heavy team regardless of who was under center if they were to be competitive.I know Moore wasn't tearing it up, but like Delhomme at least he was intent on feeding the ball to Smith and would hang in the pocket long enough to let some routes to develop. I agree with your point to an extent but it should be noted the trend in drafting that you mentioned seems to be how the majority of NFL teams draft right now.Recently how many high running back draft picks have been busts? There really is just not that many I dont think. And after the top 12 quarterbacks or so there is a gigantic mediocre to terrible tier. Only a handful of the receivers manage to produce long term with non elite quarterbacks. And many decent wide receivers are more relevant and aren't considered busts because they play with elite quarterbacks. For example, why can't lets say Josh Morgan produce like a Pierre Garcon? Is it really that much of a difference in drafting or is it just the quarterbacks they play with? Further, Carolinas only offensive first round picks this decade have been either offensive line(2) or running backs (2).Should it be that big of a surprise that is one of the few positions they really hit on? The highest they took a QB in that span was the 4th round (LeFlors).Lets look at todays elite quarterbacks and where they were drafted... 1st rounders (Peyton, Eli, Rodgers, Rivers, McNabb, Ryan, Cutler, Palmer, Big Ben, Flacco)2nd rounders (Brees at 33rd), Favre3rd: Schaub 3rd Others: Brady 6th, Romo UDFA, Warner UDFAThe list of 'exceptions' to the 'high draft pick rule' is very short. 2 of the elite quarterback exceptions were discovered by hall of famers (Brady, Romo). Kurt Warner was developed in the now non existent NFL Europe just as Delhomme had been developed. So I agree with your point that yes Hurney did seem to miss on QBs and WRs, but who is to say that was his decision? Perhaps the highest QB he had on his board ended up being a stud, it just did not fit with the "mentality of the organization" and is why a QB was never selected early. The funny part about the Panthers is that Hurney (the GM) has an eye for talent, but unfortunately it is literally position-based. To use an example, he hit it on Rbs by bringing Stephen Davis (got some good mileage out of him), whiffed on D. Foster, but nailed Williams and Stewart and even guys like Goodson and Goings. He is also exceptional at finding offensive line talent. Yet if faced at draft time with Jerry rice, Calvin Johnson or Freddie Mitchell, he would be on the FredEx train in two seconds. It is almost comical how he misses on WRs so badly. Yes he has Smith to his credit, but whiffed on guys like Donald Hayes, Dwayne Jarret, Drew Carter, and cutting Keyshawn (which was premature). On QBs, he is not too shabby...not great. He did bring in Delhomme and while he drafted LeFours (sp?), he did only get Moore off the scrap heap and I think Clausen will be decent if given the tools to be decent.Problem is they work very much like the Colts. They like their own and try to reward their own, but the reason everyone does not do that is because they can't. This is a team that if things continue could literally waddle in .500 territory for years to come. It won't come to that as most likely Hurney and Fox will be gone in 2011, but my takeaway is that their system actually works, they just don't know how to press the buttons.
You might want to look at his game logs again...Well maybe if the critics had more to go on besides him going off on the Purdues, Navys and Washingtons of the world. The few times Clausen played stiff comp he looked rather ordinary.
Give me a break guy, he didn't have a "wow" type of performance against a solid defense his entire 3 year career at ND. Point me to that game, I'm waiting...You might want to look at his game logs again...Well maybe if the critics had more to go on besides him going off on the Purdues, Navys and Washingtons of the world. Wow...I understand the hate for this guy, but disregarding his college accomplishments is foolish.Give me a break guy, he didn't have a "wow" type of performance against a solid defense his entire 3 year career at ND. Point me to that game, I'm waiting...
I simply asked for you to point me to the game that was impressive against someone other than tomato cans. He lit up suspect pass Ds there is no denying that. His resume is light vs. top competition due to the lack of bowl games and cupcake schedule. Jay Cutler took Vanderbilt into Florida and put on a show, still loss but was impressive. Won on the road at Tennessee. Clausen has no signature moments like that, if he did maybe the critics would see him differently. That's all I'm saying.Wow...I understand the hate for this guy, but disregarding his college accomplishments is foolish.Give me a break guy, he didn't have a "wow" type of performance against a solid defense his entire 3 year career at ND.
