Who do you think the Browns WILL go with moving forward?

Who do you think they SHOULD go with?

Poll and Discussion.

Akers probably the cheapest to acquire if they don't want Hunt back.

Taylor seems like a pretty logical fit here though, not sure how their cap space is.

Ford looked plenty good last night, but I'd be surprised if he wasn't going to considerably share the backfield with someone else TBD. This is a team that's predicated on the run, and by the looks of things, putting it in Watson's hands is not going to work well. Asking Ford to take on Chubb's role is probably unrealistic - it might not be great for fantasy, but good for the team to not overwork him. Whether that means Strong becomes a big part of an RBBC, a trade for Taylor, or someone else brought in remains to be seen.

I hate to say it this way but Cleveland unfortunately has to come to the realization that Chubb's career might be over, certainly not competing at the same level
How long do you want to be in pain as an organization with this?

I can see Cleveland making a move for Taylor and saying nice things about Chubb rehabbing and they will have a fierce 2-Back system but the reality is unless they make a move for Taylor or Jacobs or someone, then you push off to the '24 Draft or next off season, they already played a bunch of meaningless games last year without Watson and now 2023 ha taken a major hit.

-Sitting around and signing a vet, watching the season slowly deteriorate or they can make a bold move and continue to push in 2023 instead of "building" for next year. And it's so early in the season to just line up and go thru the motions for 15 more weeks.

They have plenty of cap space this year. Not sure about the future. Fournette and Hunt would be the cheapest to acquire. They'd have to trade to get Akers or JT and their teams will probably ask for too much.

I think Akers could be had for a 6th

Stefanski says the Browns front office is “working on” adding a running back, “working through potential options. “As you know, you don’t replace Nick Chubb with one person.”
From another thread, but appropriate here.

Interesting, it sounds like they may bring two guys in. But does this mean they run with 4 on their squad or could Strong be gone?

I did not get the sense that's what Stefanski meant when he said you can't replace Chubb with just one person. My interpretation was that he was just saying there is not someone who will just simply replace his production.

But saying that it would not surprise me because even with Chubb was healthy I was surprised how lean they went after Ford, who himself was unknown. I think some of that had to do with wanting to use Moore out of the backfield a decent amount.

I got one out of left field.

Dalvin Cook.

Jets end of things: a lot changed since they signed Dalvin. Obviously losing Rodgers was the massive impact and I can see where that would lead people to think they need to use Dalvin more but let's put that aside for a second. When they signed Dalvin, Breece had not yet returned. They don't want to overwork Breece but he's shown he's back to some degree and is already chirping at not getting the ball enough so any value they put on Dalvin as a hedge against Breece making it back would be less. Abanakanda kind of came on after the Dalvin signing. Then we got the money. The way Dalvin's contract is structured his base is just over $1m and he gets per game roster bonus up to $347k. Short version is he cost the Jets about $410K a week to keep him, if they found someone to take him they'd save potentially $6m. At this point I think getting Izzy more work over Dalvin might be a bonus as well. For Dalvin the money is ultimately why he came to the Jets but I'm sure playing with Rodgers was a big part of it. Now no Rodgers, and the healthier Breece gets his role is just going to get smaller so I don't think he'd mind a deal all that much.

Browns end of things: the money owed to Dalvin is a major negative but Stefanski is very familar with him as he served as QB coach and OC the first 3 years of Dalvin's career. The comp would be next to nothing, just the money he's owed and if they don't like what he gives them most of his contract is week to week.

Damn thats bold. That would be crazy, but it actually kinda makes sense.

Gotta wonder though if they'd rather Akers who would be basically free, or hunt who knows the system and would be fully free.

I "voted" Ford, but think he's JAG (compared to Chubb).

CLE may need to change up their offensive philosophy and find out ASAP if Watson is really this bad or maybe just not comfortable in a game manager role.

My ignorant guess is that Ford will be the lead back for a week or two while another player (or two) are signed. If that’s a big signing like JTaylor, it’s essentially over for Ford as the lead back sooner rather than later.

Hunt meeting with the Browns tomorrow. If he's even remotely in shape and cheap, gotta think he's signed asap.

Will Hunt reduce his salary demands? If not doesn't sound cheap to me. And is he in playing shape? WOndering if I should grab him now and see.

I understand the logic behind Hunt but he wasn't exactly amazing his first time thru Cleveland.
I'm sure they would utilize him but more in a 60/40 type thing with Ford, after MNF game it looks like Ford will easily be the starter moving forward.
I don't see Hunt coming in and taking 15-20 touches a week
That would be a reason they likely don't want to overpay him, even if Ford were to miss time I don't think they would overload Hunt

Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot reports the Browns are “close” to signing RB Kareem Hunt.
The deal, according to Cabot, is expected to get done on Wednesday. Hunt visited with his former team on Tuesday, a day after Nick Chubb went down with a season-ending knee injury against the Steelers. That the Browns let Hunt walk this offseason and rolled with Jerome Ford as the team’s RB2 likely means Ford will function as the lead back with Chubb sidelined. Hunt could eventually cut into Ford’s pass-game involvement, limiting Ford’s fantasy ceiling.

With the Browns looking like they will be signing Hunt I still lean Ford carrying much of the load. But anything can change. Not an easy matchup this week for Cleveland or Ford against the Titans.

Yeah - My guess is Hunt is goes back to role similar to what he had last year.

Well just read it's a done deal. In the article the following was written:

""On first glance, Ford put together a very nice night, rushing 16 times for 106 yards. But one carry accounted for 69 of those yards, meaning his average per rush on the other 15 attempts came in at 2.5 yards.

That's not how the Browns intend to run the football, Chubb or no Chubb. It became clear they wouldn't be able to proceed with the just likes of Ford and the recently acquired Pierre Strong, especially with the continued struggles of quarterback Deshaun Watson weighing down their offense. Knowing Hunt was available and still living in the area, Cleveland made one of the most predictable phone calls in recent memory, and in less than 24 hours, bygones were bygones between Hunt and his hometown team.

He might not take lead back snaps on a short week against the Titans, Stefanski told reporters on Tuesday that Ford was the new lead back, but Hunt likely will be expected to carry a larger share of the load than he ever did while sharing the backfield with Chubb. We'll see if he's up to the task.""

Week one I have no clue. Is Hunt really in football shape? Is the playbook so similar to what he knew he can step right in? I don't think I'm gonna bench anyone for him this week. Or maybe. Just realized I am short RBs now and I have to start Warren. Maybe I try Hunt?

Just based on matchup

Warren>Hunt

Not really anxious to start him. Have to compare him and Jaylen Warren and figure who gets the most action. Probably Warren.

Maybe I don't fully understand the money complexities, but does CLE really burn $4MM on a guy they're not going to use a lot? Yes, Ford looked good but Hunt might still have some tread on the tires even if he looked pretty shot last year.

I grabbed Hunt (spent $27 out of $100 allotment) in a 16-teamer where I was RB-starved thanks to Akers. Hoping for the best here.

Maybe we should wait for the terms of Hunt's contract to be released before we start talking how much the Browns have actually invested in him?

X Spurt speculation

Couple of smart guys think it’s $2.5M base, $1.5M incentives. Are they saying nothing upfront (& we know it won’t be GTD, only 112 out of 2K NFL players have guaranteed deals.)

Anyway, details won’t come out for a few days (typically.)

Anyway…

I was the only one who put in a claim. Don’t need him rn (& who would start him or Ford v that TEN front?), will hold a few weeks until the byes to see how it shakes out. HC said he’s not the lead back so low expectations but minimal investment so NBD.

I misheard on SiriusXM this morning. I could have sworn they just said "$4MM" and not "up to...".

Warren>Hunt

Monitor the Titans injury report. This week's first practice report adds new injuries to three important DL players - Denico Autry, Harold Landry, and Teair Tart. It might not end up being as negative a matchup as you would normally think.

I appreciate the can-do attitude but as long as Simmons is in the middle it's a problem. Maybe a lesser one but still would rather face the Raiders by a good margin.
