Clinton Portis Placed on IR (1 Viewer)

Per CBS website. Done for the year, presuming they want to rest him till next season.

Couldn't link it here is the text.

Clinton Portis, RB WAS

News: The Redskins have placed RB Clinton Portis on injured reserve, ending his 2009 season. Portis suffered a concussion in Week 9 and wasn't able to return. "We felt at this juncture in the season, it was best to place Clinton on injured reserve," Redskins Executive Vice President of Football Operations Vinny Cerrato said in a statement. "After consulting with our medical staff and other specialists, Clinton's prognosis is good and we expect him to make a full recovery and return to the Redskins." Rock Cartwright is expected to continue his work as the primary running back for the Redskins.

Analysis: The Redskins might have made this move to simply "rest" him for 2010, though he had been suffering side effects from the concussion as recently as last week.

Oh what might have been if he didn't go to WAS... sad to see talent like Portis wasted on unappreciative Danny Snyder. :football:

Not looking good, I have him in dynasty, I would presume they would get another back for next year to at least compete with him if he does come back.

lets hope he hangs it up and doesn't risk further head trauma

he treated me well as a dynasty owner although trading him for DeAngelo Williams was a big time OOOF

As a dynasty owner this is only good news. This gives him plenty of rest and rehab for next year. He's what.....28. I believe he has more left in the tank than most. Curtis Martin was like 31 and led the league in rushing after knee or ankle prblem. His trade value has hit rock bottom.

I agree. Even if he came back I wouldn't have used him. It is better to take some time off, and not risk re-injury. Although, this is not the news I want to hear when talking of a concussion, hopefully he can come back. This is the first concussion I can think of him having.

Portis on Monday traveled to Pittsburgh to begin a two-day evaluation process under the supervision of concussion specialists at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. But after physicians determined that Portis had not improved enough to be cleared to resume full participation in football activity, the Redskins decided to end Portis's season.

Portis's main doctor "didn't like what he saw," the eight-year veteran said during his regular scheduled appearance on ESPN 980's "The John Thompson Show."

"I was really hoping I could get back on the field."

Portis has experienced vision problems since he suffered the concussion in Week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons. On the radio show, Portis said he' has been feeling better, but test results the past two days indicated otherwise. In a couple of areas, "I had went down," Portis said.

Portis said he thought his vision was improved, but results showed that one eye wasn't as strong as the other and another strong hit could cause further damage. The "doctor said he wasn't going to" clear him, Portis said.

He definitely isn't old age-wise by running back standards, having left college early. That said, he still has a lot of mileage on him - nearly 2200 carries. It remains to be seen whether this injury was just a blip on the radar screen or whether the injury pushes off that proverbial RB cliff. Unfortunately, we've seen that it happens fast - just look at LT, and now perhaps Portis and Westbrook.Portis's recovery should be one of the more interesting FF developments heading into next year.

I touched on Portis' future in today's Daily Dose for Rotoworld:

The Redskins placed Clinton Portis on season-ending injury reserve Tuesday after concussion specialists in Pittsburgh refused to clear him for action. "The doctor feared that if I took another hit like that, [the vision problems] would get worse," explained Portis. "He said it rattled the vision and that was his main concern."

Both the Redskins and Portis' agent gave positive assessments of his future, saying the prognosis is good and he's fully expected to be ready for the 2010 season. A more reflective and less optimistic Portis, however, wondered if this was the end of the line during his weekly radio appearance on ESPN980. "If it's my time and I look back today, I think I had a great career," said Portis. "I'm 28, man. I'm not going to be devastated. I enjoyed it. I had fun doing it. I gave everything I had doing it. I did it to the best of my ability."

Portis did say that he believes he can get back to normal with rehab, but his career is now in limbo. The team would face a cap hit of as much as $14.8 million if they released him before June 1. What's more, the majority of his $7.2 million salary for next season is guaranteed. A close confidant of owner Daniel Snyder, the Redskins will give him all the time he needs for a full recovery.

The offseason will be one of drastic change in the nation's capitol. Coach Jim Zorn is dead man walking, and the new head man isn't going to build his offense around a 29-year-old back with concussion issues and lifeless legs. As much as Portis has given to the 'Skins over the past six seasons, the offense has played at a much higher level without him these past five games. The smart money still says Portis will return in 2010, though he'll be splitting time with the new brass' hand-picked successor. His days of fantasy stardom are numbered, but Portis is right about one thing: it has been a great ride.

Portis is talking like a player that has already retired.

I could see the Skins negotiating a buy out with Portis. Then watch Shanahan will bring him in to reek RBBC havoc with his new team, pissing off owners of the current starter before he even coaches a single game.

I was very wrong on Portis this season.

That being said, if Clinton comes back I get the feeling he'll end up on my teams in 2010 considering how late he'll be drafted.

Misused badly in Washington. He has lost a lot of burst the last 2 years. I think he is done.
