Clinton Portis RB steal of '07 drafts? (Finished #3 in PPR) (1 Viewer)

I am not including guys like Grant, Graham, or Watson, who all had great years, but probably went undrafted in most leagues. But I'm curious how many guys won their leagues after drafting Portis in the 3rd or 4th round this year? Considering how banged up the Skins o-line was, I think Portis could easily repeat those type of numbers next year too. Plus, he became much more involved in the passing game. Gibbs even commented on this at redskins.com, saying that Portis is a smart player. That he knows if he gets the ball in open space, he's very dangerous. It just seems each year, a lot of people waive off Portis, still claiming he's not a great back outside of Denver, or that he's injury prone. I could see him falling yet again to the 2nd round next year, and I think he'll continue to make his owners happy. Anyone else loving Portis right about now? :goodposting:

I loved getting Portis in the 3rd, but would up finishing 4th in my league (losing Ronnie Brown was too big to overcome).

Portis has looked very explosive the last 3-4 games (something I thought he lacked the 1st half of the year).

I would say Randy Moss and Tom Brady were the steals of the draft...but at RB, certainly Portis was among the best values of those RBs actually on draft boards to start the season. I was definitely not super high on him; and sure wished I had opted for Portis instead of Travis Henry in about a half dozen drafts.

Portis only fell because of uncertainty regarding his injury just before the start of the season. If reports were that he was 100% healthy, he would have been an early 2nd rounder easily.

This year was not kind to RBs taken in the first 2 rounds:

Tomlinson (OK)

SJax injured

LJ injured

Gore injured and misused until end

Addai (OK)

Westbrook (OK)

Henry injured

Rudi injured

Alexander injured

McGahee (OK)

Maroney injured and underutilized

MJD underutilized

Brown injured

Bush (OK, injured at end)

Portis (OK)

need I go on?

I'm already curious to see his ADP come draft day next year. I'm sure people will again try to find reasons to waive him off.

Hopefully people aren't too stupid to remember this next year when, inevitably, Portis misses a portion of training camp with a difficult to diagnose "injury".

I remember in every new dynasty I drafted Portis late 2nd and was called stupid. I was called a ####### even more so when I didn't REACH for Betts in the 6th round. Fact of the matter is Portis is a pimp, but he has more haters than any other stud RB in this league. Even now, haters claim that if RB's would have been healthy all season, Portis would not be a top 10 fantasy RB. However, if Portis was the RB that would have gotten injured, he automatically sucks. It is an interesting dynamic, but I hope it continues.

I drafted him in the third round, but missed the playoffs at 5-8. What killed me was failing to recognize that Romo was an every week start until week 4, drafting FWP at 1.05, and having Gates go into his mid-season swoon.

Portis was definitely value, and especially in the playoffs.

In our preseason rankings, I was listed in the bottom 3 because I didnt have have a RB1 between Portis, MB3 and a few others. I knew Portis would do well and could have done much better if Gibbs would let him play on 3rd downs.

No... hopefully they are too stupid to remember.

Fair point! :lmao:I've already got him rostered...but for those who don't, he'll be a great "buy low" candidate once he's "injured" again in July. But it'll be so, so annoying to see people in the SP saying "Portis is done" "Betts is the better RB", etc etc.....

Is it just me, or does it seem like the more "power back" type were the ones banged up more?

Ladell who? That smokescreen let Portis fall right into my lap. I couldn't believe the number of posters fell into the "Betts will cut into Portis's carries because he played so well" trap.

He was a tremendous value and he allowed me to get P. Manning in a heavy QB scoring league.

I didn't draft Portis, but traded for him and L Evans for Crayton and Javon Walker. I think that's a steal. I ended up losing in the finals to the owner I stole Portis from. Go figure.

Sorry Jason, but guy ( Brady)who consistently throws for roughly 28 TDs /year leading up to this historical season, one who is a consensus top 3 QB, is by NO means a steal of any draft. Portis really has been a great bargain..

I'd also add the following to that list:

Fred Taylor

Jamal Lewis - was labeled as a `has-been ` in most fantasy magazines and websites.

Jamal Lewis is a good call. People went out of their way to avoid that guy in my draft. The guy who took him did so just basically out of "geez, someone has to do it".

keeper league so avail rbs were minimal but I took him after LT and Rudi Johnson went and then was laughed at when I took him over T Jones and Brandon Jackson. Even more so when someone "stole" betts a few picks later leaving me with Jordan and Rhodes (and eventually fargas).

Ended up trading Jordan for Betts later and managed a 2nd place finish since Garrard and P Manning both sat. Losy by 6 points or 1 more Manning drive with a TD.

So I am a big fan of Portis and always have been.

Edited to add rb rankings from my league:

LT

Westbrook

Adrian P

Portis

Addai

J Lewis

McGahee

M Barber

Gore

Graham

Dang, I was off by 1.

I think Braylon Edwards was the steal of the draft.
:( In a keep-three keeper league, I rode Portis ( pick 1.05 ) and Braylon Edwards (2.08) to my league championship game, only to lose by 7 points, having started Willie Parker (one of my three keepers) as my RB1. That's a broken leg I will remember for many years. The injury questions surrounding both Portis and Edwards presumably prevented their previous owners from protecting them for the 2007 fantasy draft, and both gambles paid off handsomely for me. Thanks go to the Shark Pool ( and Redman, in particular) for giving me the courage to draft Portis.Looking ahead to 2008, I will likey keep Portis and Edwards, and throw back Parker and Ocho Cinco, both of whom I held over from 2006. How quickly the league changes...

I was incorrectly down on CP before the season and I am here to admit it. I am already warming up to drafting him for '08 though. :excited:

I had Portis in 3 out of my 4 leagues this year. I can't say I was really high on him going into the season, but in the drafts I was in, he just represented unbelievable value.

In fact, in two of them I got him in the mid 3rd and late 3rd rounds......drafting a WR in the 2nd how could I pass him up?

I didn't win any leagues this year but finished 2nd in two and 3rd in points in another......so I cashed in with Portis just didn't win it all.

Well I won 4 SB titles this year, and had Portis on 3 of those teams. And I would have won a 5th title if I would have started Portis over Parker in the final game (ironically, it was the first time, ALL YEAR, i benched Portis. I guess I deserved it!) Portis is definitely an elite RB talent in this league. I think even if he is there at 2.1, that's a steal next year. :goodposting:

I think you're kidding yourself if you think Portis will fall outside the 2nd round this year. He will likely end up being a 1st round and top 10 overall pick in most leagues next year.

Last year, Portis was a shark pick as people put way too much stock into Ladell Betts.

This year, I think we'll see people still thinking of Portis as the savvy pick and end up drafting a guy who's value this year had as much to do with the failure of more highly drafted RBs as it did in his performance himself a little bit higher than they should.

Going into this past season I was alllllllll over Portis and AD's jocks because they were such great value. Next season I doubt I'll own either because their value is gone with so many people missing them last year and wanting to make up for it this coming season.

In leagues that gave points for return yards & return TDs, MJD was a top 10 back. I know in my main league (40return yd=1pt, 6 for tds) he was RB7, ahead of Marion Barber by 1 total points on the season. Not bad for a 2nd year player. The team that won that league (almost me!) had Mjd and... PORTIS :lmao:

How many big plays is Champ Bailey going to have this post-season? I love watching him play.

:lmao: It's the same mentality that will bring these people to draft AD and Portis next year that kept them away this year. So I'll move on to others. Perhaps FWP, Bush, not sure who else right now, Caddillac Williams might be a candidate.
