Cobb Fumble (1 Viewer)

CBS still has Cobb's punt return pass listed as a fumble for Cobb instead of Green Bay's D/ST. I watched the game but was a little inebriated at the time, the play was a punt return/special teams play correct?

(8:11) (Punt formation) 8-A.Podlesh punts 47 yards to GB 23, Center-65-P.Mannelly. 18-R.Cobb to GB 20 for -3 yards. FUMBLES, RECOVERED by CHI-37-A.Walters at GB 16. 37-A.Walters to GB 16 for no gain (24-J.Bush). Penalty on GB-24-J.Bush, Offensive Holding, declined. #18 Cobb attempted a backwards pass to #10 Ross. Ross did not complete the reception and thus the fumble is charged to #18 Cobb.

I think the Pack's special teams coach was a bit inebriated me thinks. It was a punt return to start the play. Cobb threw it across field and behind him the ball should have been caught by Ross-10 he muffed it, tried to recover and the Bears recovered. I think it depends on how your scoring is set up for special teams or indiviual.

Ya if you would have gotten a TD for a punt return TD for Cobb then the fumble should count for him individually. If you don't get credit for the TDs Cobb has when punt returning then you shouldn't be charged with the fumble.

I believe CBS counts fumbles against individual players even if they are playing special teams.

It may seem unfair but I bet you wouldn't have complained if CBS gave him 6 points for scoring on a punt return TD.

Yeah I kind of agree. If they can get points for returning a TD, they should be able to get negative points for a fumble. It's gotta go both ways.

If Cobb had scored a touchdown it would have only counted for GB's D/ST and CBS automatically calculates that stat according to my league's settings. I am the commish and nobody has ever brought this to my attention before but I have Cobb and noticed it. Here is CBS's official response:

The NFL does not differentiate fumbles between offense and special teams. The official stat sheet only shows that the player fumbled the ball. If a player fumbles, it will be counted against them whether they are on offense or special teams. The only way to correct this is to make manual adjustments to your league's scoring by going to the Live Scoring page and clicking the Adjust Scoring link at the bottom of the page.
