Collecting / Flipping stuff (1 Viewer)

Does anyone on here collect things and occasionally flip them for profit? I have been toying with the idea of picking up a few cheap broken watches on eBay and seeing if I could fix them to flip. It helps that I like watches.

The benefits of this would be minimal startup cost, can go at my own pace and if I cannot sell them I will wear them. I would like to do this with classic cars but that's not happening any time soon.

Anyone else do this?

Not planned initially but I've always picked up things that I thought might be of use and now I'm looking at clearing out just for some space. Got a Delta Rockwell table saw and tables with no room to set up anymore (and probably no need since I'm done house-building). Also a rotisserie corn roaster that doesn't fit in our food truck--I'll either set up another trailer or sell it to someone else to do. Picked up a Foosball table for God's sake--one of those "too good to pass up" deals but I'm not running a bar now yet ever? lol

I did this with cell phones. eBay is tricky though, they charge you a lot of fees. Amazon was the way to go for my business plan at least.

You could make some money doing that but it'd be hard to make much.

In general, collecting and flipping is tough. You get attached as a collector and want to keep your best stuff.

The resell market is about finding and moving #### at high volumes. Otherwise, it's a hobby. Nothing wrong with a hobby that makes a few extra bucks as long as you don't expect more than that.

I'd fancied similar as a cast iron lover. Watches would be better (shipping cast iron eats a lot of profit), but still tough I think.

My wife had some success with kids clothes for a while. Bought good clothing lines on massive sale, gymboree especially. She'd make sets and get more than she paid after the kids wore them. Worked well with little ones, not so much now that they're older - huge market for "cute" baby to infant clothes, but it's different for older kids.

Friends do the card stuff but that doesn't seem to make any money.

some type of niche market like watches may give you a better opportunity for profit. It's not just ebay, but it seems that the market is over saturated with people peddling crap. same old supply and demand rules at work here. I used to be able find some treasures at garage sales or auctions, but now everyone is on the lookout for redline hotwheel cars and GI Joes with the kung fu grip. It became a waste of time, so I stopped.

My dad does this. He collects cast iron arcade toys mostly buying and selling through ebay. Some of them are worth a good bit of money. He's been in the market for 20+ years and on ebay for probably 5 or 6 years. I couldn't tell you how much he makes doing it (he also works full time) and he keeps a ton of them.
