Collinsworth-less (1 Viewer)

I guess my take on sports announcers in general is simple. Are they unbiased, for the most part? And, do they add some value to the broadcast, in terms of their knowledge? Collinsworth checks both boxes for me. Most do. I think Tirico is great, as I have great respect for guys who can do multiple sports well. Guys like Bob Costas, Kevin Harlan, Ted Robinson, etc., in my opinion, are/were the best at their craft. Not only knowledgeable, but versatile, and they can make any sports broadcast (for the most part) interesting.

That said, there are some that don't check both boxes. Matt Millen and Randy Cross were two guys that come to mind who simply couldn't hide the fact that they were pulling for one team or another. And, Dennis Miller, during his stint on MNF, was somebody who added zero value in terms of his football knowledge. Funny guy, maybe. Football expertise, not so much.

...but can we all agree that the combination of theisman, maguire and patrick was the mount rushmore of poo?
For sure, but I will always like Mike Patrick. I thought he was fine, and he also was the voice of a LOT of stuff I watched back then, so nostalgia and all that.

Y'all obviously never spent even a few years living in the Detroit market.

When you consistently get saddled with the 5th / 6th / 7th string crew, you realize that job ain't for everyone.
  1. Chris Myers & Robert Smith (Fox Myers gets a new partner every year)
  2. Spero Dedes & Jay Feely (CBS 7th string crew - always gets the worst game of the week)
  3. Steve Levy, Louis Riddick, & Dan Orlovsky (ESPN B team)
  4. Rich Eisen, Michael Irvin, Steve Mariucci, & Kurt Warner (NFLN)
That's pretty much the Four Horseman of the apocalypse of announcing crews.

This is exactly correct. For all the "bad" announcers of the world, there are also guys like Ian Eagle who cover the Jets. Getting those teams every week lets you know your team is a nobody. Thank God for the Lions and Jets we won't have that this year.

Am I just that clueless about football analysis to recognize whatever he says that people hate so much? I hear this all the time about Collinsworth and I have no idea what's wrong with what he says.
He is like nails on a chalkboard for me. I wish I could post all the commentary from him that has me screaming STFU at the television every Sunday night, but if I actually compiled them it would probably send me to a padded room. But allow me to quote something he said during a Sunday night game last season between the Bengals vs. Ravens when Baltimore LB Patrick Queen made a tackle. "Patrick Queen is finally starting to get it." Finally starting to get it, Cris? He only had 106 tackles in his rookie year in 2020 and 98 in 2021 with almost 70 solo in both those campaigns. This is just one quote of many every week which drive me ubatz.

Captain Obvious is a perfect title for him.

I'd actually agree with Collinsworth on that one. Queen had high tackle counts but was an awful player as a rookie, he took a slight step forward in year 2, but still wasn't very good, last year was the 1st time he looked like a 1st round pick, and that (perhaps coincidently, it could have been he wasn't a great fit with Wink as well) coincided with the Roquan Smith trade.

Yes, Miller and Tony Kornheiser were absolutely exceptions to my "never notice the announcers" rule. I actually had high expectations in both cases, but they were terrible, in large part because they stuck out so much. When you're constantly aware of who the announcers are and what they're saying -- and when what they're saying isn't adding a lot to your understanding of the game -- that's a very bad thing

Not trying to be pedantic, but I believe PFF was founded overseas and it wasn't Collinsworth who did so. I think it was statheads who couldn't find what they were looking for with the average dissemination of football statistics.

That said, I respect him for seeing its importance and buying a majority stake in it.

Charlie Jones and Lindsey Nelson were my favorite announcers. Frank Gifford was the most technically correct. Cosell was irritating, but he brought drama to MNF and I liked him. Marv Albert had the voice that was recognizable anywhere. Al DeRogatis might have been the #1 football analyst of all time.

Obviously he is NBA, but the conversation is really about calling games. No mention of Bill Walton? Only a Walton called game can u learn about half court ball movement and how to barbecue tofu patties in a 30 second time block. Ha ha

Walton looks like he could use some red meat.

Cawood Ledford was the best radio announcer of all time (See Coach K praise).

Also, there was no voice that will ever match NFL Films great John Facenda.

Back in the day Johnny Most was the Celtics radio play-by-play guy. He was an absurd Celtics homer, and smoked I think 3 packs a day, and you could hear every cigarette over the radio, let me tell you. The way I watched Celtics games growing up was with the TV volume down, and radio turned up. Can't really do that now, there's always a lag somewhere or another.

This was also the Bad Boys Pistons days, and man, Johnny Most was disgusted by their brand of play  . For real,Celtics/pistons was must-listen TV.

Collinsworth is fine.

It’s very hard to toe the line between flashing your personality and not letting the personality overwhelm the audience over the course of several decades. You can’t please everyone and Collinsworth is better than most

Unless they’re gonna let guys get hammered in the booth again, he’s about as good as it’s gonna get.

Irritating voice, but a legend.

Now here's a guy who can definitely get on my nerves from time to time, but there are a lot worse guys out there. He's very knowledgeable, no question. Tirico is so bad in the both that I like Collinsworth more than I used to.

I'm sure he's a good guy, but he's the absolute worst! He totally shlemieled that whole thing about the RT. That guy was practically lined up in the backfield half the time. Rocking around in his stance while Mahomes was into his cadence...oh, and Detroit, they, they need to go the officials & tell them to put a stop to it. Ha-ha, WHAT!? There's the door, get out, NOW!! I loved it when they showed the guy coming off before the snap, it was beyond obvious. Collinsworth was like: "I honestly don't believe that's a false start."

A complete tool, give me the guy that would've said: Oh god, only in professional football, that right there, I don't know what that is. Now get that out from in front of me.

I bet it feels great to not have to hide stuff
Yeah, I imagine it's pretty liberating...
I'm bald Dave!
I haven't read any of the books in my house
I didn't forget about your lawn mower, I broke it!
It's not even mine, I took it from Jake.
He's the worst! ha-ha

You heard the man! Go on! Git!!

… i dunno. It’s something about Collinsworth being sucky I think.

Loved him when he first got in the booth. Seemed a breath of fresh air. Colorful, good energy, dare I say sober.

He's tired now, very cliche'd, a company man in some ways. Past his prime. Or the sport has moved past him.

It happens to everyone of us, regardless of profession. Just not on national television.

He should probably still do games, serve as a mentor. But he shouldn't be headlining.

Collinsworth knows the game, and I often find myself asking "how did he see that?" And he doesn't pull any punches. Those are the positives.

However, you can tell in the first two minutes of the game what his one or two "themes" are going to be, and he beats them to death for the next 58 minutes. Plus the absolute jock swinging on guys like Mahomes, the hyperbole, the dumb things he says. I really don't like him.

Here's a name you don't here very often when talking about great color commentators: Jerry Glanville.

I don't know how long he worked in the booth, but it didn't seem very long. He was really knowledgeable, charismatic, and entertaining. Sort of a Madden light.

I believe people shouldn't drink too much and post at FBGs. The end results is a lot of ridiculous rambling like his post that doesn't make a lot of sense. I suppose the bright side he's not driving a car.........hopefully.

Perhaps you didn't notice, there was a point during the game when the attention turned to KC's RT. Collinsworth the source & going back to his days in Tampa, this player has a tendency to lean on ambiguity, the gray area, with respect to the rules. Nothing new, like most of the rules, illegal formation can be rather lax. The RT was noticeably lining up off the ball. He was also shown rocking in his stance & coming off the ball before it was snapped. To me, Collinsworth's "expert" analysis was pretty feebs. Not to suggest he's the only one, but there have been times, like after a big play, he'll go on about the rapport between a given QB & his WR... when, what actually occurred, what was clearly more relevant to the success of the play, was a complete breakdown in coverage.......... others here obviously love him, perhaps I hold them to a different standard?

I stand by the post you replied to.

After Waller made his first catch in what ended up being that terrible Giants/Cowboys game, Collinsworth said something to the basic effect of: "Darren Waller is the LeBron James of tight ends in the NFL today".
