Colonoscopy preparation today..... (1 Viewer)

Prep was easy actually. 2 dulcolax pills at 4pm and then did the first 7 dose murolax at 6pm and was clear some time after 9. Went to sleep early since I had to get up around 2 for the next 7 dose lax. Probably about 5 or 6 trips to the bathroom in all and I was already awake when I needed to go. Typical sleep for me other than getting up at 430 to get my last cup of water. No issues with the procedure and they got me in 30 minutes early since they had a cancellation.

Wore this shirt to give them a little laugh. https://tinyurl.com/4dbfw74w
My prep was similar, but I took the whole 14 dose miralax at once. No getting up in the middle of the night was great.

Wait, is this a thing? I'm starting my own prep right now, except using the prescription Suflave instead of Miralax. Otherwise, my prep is exactly as 3C's describes.

So ... if I wanted to, I could take both Suflave doses at once? Instead of one dose at 6 p.m. and the other at 2 a.m.? Honestly, with the way my body functions ... complete, um, evacuation is the least of my worries. Complete emptying should come effortlessly for me, as I'm not fighting my body's natural constitution (e.g. never, ever constipated -- in fact, all too often the opposite).
Theoretically, the doses should be taken several hours apart, allowing intestinal motility to move out whatever residual colonic debris remains. Double dosing up front won’t have the same effect, but you could move up the schedule, taking both doses during the day, and fasting longer pre-procedure.

All that said, my bowel movements were clear a couple hours after the Dulcolax, before I’d taken any Miralax. Those of us with rapid gut transit are being punished by constipated folks, as the preps are designed to ensure everyone is cleaned out.

My instructions were for all of it at once. There was no time limit on drinking the mix. I should have taken another hour to drink so I didn't get so full.

Ah, thanks for this. Taking the two doses at, say, 4:00 p.m. and midnight seems a lot better than the recommended 6 p.m./2:00 a.m. My procedure is early in the morning—the extra fasting will be while I’m asleep.

I used Suflave for the first time. It was by far the best bowel prep med I have used so far. And it was very effective. Used it egg-zactly as prescribed and I was perfectly prepped for an 8am colonoscopy. For me, the worst part was getting up at 3:30am to take that second dose. I would not say it tasted exactly like a sports drink, though... I thought it had a very slightly salty after taste to it, but not objectionable.
It occurred to me that maybe instead of water, the Suflave could’ve been mixed with PowerAde or something like that. Sounds like it’ll be fine by me even using water, though — that salt aftertaste sounds a lot like old-school Gatorade, which I always liked.

I have no idea about mixing it with anything except water. I can tell you, though, after the first dose, which resulted in a respectable dump, I was still a little incredulous. I mean, I knew I wasn't totally cleaned out yet. But the second dose was the coup d'etat. After that, and just before my colonoscopy was set to begin, I knew I was ready. I mean, I went twice while waiting in the waiting room for one hour. And everything was clear on that last one.

Bowel prep is certainly an imperfect science, a lot of it purely at the discretion of the endoscopist. That said, there’s some data showing single dose preps work just fine:
Background: Comparative efficacy of same-day bowel preparations for colonoscopy remains unclear.

Aims: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials comparing the efficacy of same-day versus split dose bowel preparations for colonoscopy.

Methods: A systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE, clinicaltrials.gov, Cochrane Registry, EMBASE, SCOPUS, Web of Science and CINAHL. Studies were gathered using keywords: "morning preparation", "morning bowel preparation", "same day bowel preparation", and "colonoscopy." Pooled estimates of bowel preparation quality were analyzed among studies with categorical and continuous outcomes according to relative risk (RR) or mean difference (MD). A random effects model was chosen a priori for all analyses.

Results: A total of 1216 studies were retrieved with 15 trials meeting inclusion criteria. The categorical outcome of high quality bowel preparation for any same-day bowel preparation versus any split preparation was no different with a RR 0.95 [0.90;1.00] (P=0.62). Adenoma detection rate (ADR) was not different between groups, RR 0.97 [0.79;1.20] (P=0.81). Willingness to repeat and tolerability did not differ (RR 1.14 [0.96,1.36] (P=0.14) and RR 1.00 [0.96;1.04] (P=0.98), respectively. Adverse events were similar except for bloating, which was less frequent among the same-day preparation group, RR 0.68 [0.40;0.94] (P=0.02).

Conclusion: No clinically significant differences were noted among recipients of same day or split dose regimens. Adenoma detection rate, willingness to repeat and tolerability were similar, but bloating and interference with sleep favored the same-day preparations. Given lack of clinical differences, patient preference should dictate timing of colonoscopy preparation.

We did it boys. Not a polyp to be found. Maybe eating all that damn rabbit food has started to pay dividends. I already scheduled my next visit for 2034. Everyone there was super nice. Got some nice restaurant recs from the filipino nurse.

10 years still seems like a crazy length of time - I understand that’s the recommendation and more importantly I have no idea what I’m talking about.

The part in red was :moneybag: I ended up drinking the two Suflave dose bottles six hours apart, 4:45 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. That allowed me to get a reasonable night's sleep before leaving the house at 7:30 a.m.

Getting up at 2 a.m. to drink the second bottle was wholly unnecessary -- just needed to start the bottles earlier. Why don't they just tell people with morning procedures to just do something like 2 p.m./9 p.m.? Or I guess they don't want people winging it too much.

...

And yes, all went well. Two little polyps (2mm and 5mm) snipped out and sent to the lab. See ya in 7 years!

Dang! I was wondering if miso soup would've been allowed during prep, and it was! The More You Know[TM]

Also: Skim milk in my prep-day morning coffee would've been allowed. Not my go-to, but might help others who check out this thread in the future.

I did miso but strained it so it was only liquid.

The early morning procedure is the way to go. Did mine at 1 but didnt realize the process at time of booking and wanted to just get it done with since id been procrastinating. Not a big deal but certainly the better route.

How long do you think cancer takes to develop?

No clue.

Many years - decades. This is why you don't hear about kids dying of colon cancer. It typically requires a polyp develop, then undergo malignant transformation.

To qualify for the ten-year interval, you need a completely normal endoscopy. No precancerous polyps, and no other risk factors for colon cancer. In this context, there's data you can safely wait 20 years between colonoscopies, so 10 year intervals are already erring on the side of caution.

All that said, occasionally a cancer will develop before 10 years are up. These generally are treatable, and may reflect a bad prep or endoscopist oversight at the time of the initial "normal" colonoscopy. But this risk must be weighed against the complication rate, cost, and inconvenience of more frequent screening.

If you're really concerned, you can probably pay for additional colonoscopies out-of-pocket, or partake in less invasive screening like Cologuard between scopings.

10.5 years obviously

The above is why I'm thinking that my scope at 70yo will be my last one...and possibly use the below occasionally after that.

Pouring out a Gatorlax cocktail for this poor yutz:
I have a colonoscopy today. Yesterday, I started my prep. Haven't ate anything in over 24 hours and drank all the laxative. It's been a long 24 hours so far of just hanging out in my bathroom. Just checked my phone and realized my colonoscopy is actually July 12th and not June 12th.....I hate myself.

I just did Cologuard this morning. I was working from home and my wife was going out to the store so I had her drop it off at the UPS store. She didn’t know what it was until after she had agreed to do it. She isn’t very happy with me.

I’m up tomorrow. Why didn’t I just do cologuard???
Because the commercials are dumb and there is more dignity in having someone shove a camera up your butt vs pooping in a box?
You don't poop in the box. You poop in a collection bucket then put that sucker in the box.

When I did it I of course proceeded to take what was easily the largest dump of my life, and I had to scramble when it became apparent it wasn't going to all fit in the bucket. It was quite a scene.

Yea my dr originally ordered me one and then it came in and I decided there is no way I’m walking into the UPS Store with a pile of ****.
I just scheduled a UPS pick up, and left the box on our front porch for UPS to take. Didn't have to look the delivery guy or a counter-person in the eye to hand them a box with my waste matter in it.

Although I made sure we tipped him nicely around Christmas time that year.

Same. When the doors open, the theater empties

You can now!!!

First timer this upcoming Thursday. 47 y/o. Made the rookie mistake of a 2:15 appointment. I rarely ever have bathroom issues so this might be interesting.

I thought they had pills for this now?

A 47 year old first timer who went this past Thursday. The not eating was rough. I had an 11:00 appointment, but they were way behind, so I was not too far off your time. Was still probably worth it to not have to drink that stuff any earlier in the morning

Poop in a bucket pack it in a box every three years or jump start the system, take a glorious nap have nurses give you cookies and juice once every 10.... Easy decision

thread has given me an idea……..mobile colonoscopy pick up service.

i need a name, but have my motto;

“what can i do for brown?”

They won't let you take Ubers home so you would somehow have to get some sort of medical clearing I think
you’ve misunderstood. when all you guys hit the dump in a box and leave it for pick up or have the wife dump it at the UPS, my to be named service will handle this asspect. maybe, back door to door? poop ahoy?
