Colorado ski trip (1 Viewer)

What did you think of Snowy Range (if you made it there)?
I enjoyed it.  Small and quaint. $50 lift ticket. Not crowded at all. If you live north of Denver, I'd recommend trying it to avoid the craziness of going to the big resorts in Colorado. Not in the same universe as the big resorts, obviously.

A Basin is great.  Glad you had fun.  You can't go wrong in that part of Colorado.  Breck.  Vail.  Copper.  Loveland.  Keystone.  I didn't ski out west until I was 40 years old.  Needless to say, nothing back east sniffs what the Rockies have to offer.  Utah pretty much the same story.  Have not been to Jackson Hole.  I'm not sure I have the ability for that place but want to give it a shot anyway.
Surprised it wasn't crowded. Never waited over a minute to get on the lift.

Same here. I'm 42 and this is my first time skiing out here. Pretty challenging but the scenary is amazing.

They are on the Ikon Pass this year, but with only 10 days. That has significantly cut down on the crowds they had last year, which created parking issues. Also, the forecast was for high winds and a lot of people sit those days out.

If I lived out here, I'd likely go to Snowy Range more than anywhere else. Cant imagine taking a family of four to any of the Colorado resorts very often. Would cost me 1k for one day of skiing. Screw that. It's awesome, though.

We were fortunate on the A-Basin trip.  Cost $20 for lift ticket, ski rentals, and the ride out and back through the military base.

Has anyone here skied on the backside of the mountain at A-Basin? Wasn't groomed. The sheer size of the area I skied into was like nothing I'd ever seen. It's this huge mountainside. I didn't even know where to go when I got to the middle of it. Had to stop and look to see where the trail went. Unreal

That's Montezuma Bowl, more commonly known as Zuma. And it's great. Not as great as the Beavers is just the other side of the ridge from west Zuma, imo, but I love it.

If the scale of Zuma impressed you, you should see the back bowls at Vail sometime.

I have to go to Vail sometime, then.  I was blown away yesterday.

Arapahoe totalled kicked my ###. Much more challenging than I'm used to. Could only do half of the blues. Ate it big time on one. Amazing long runs through the trees. The back bowl there is really something to see. Amazing day.
Yeah, that's what I was saying.  The people kept telling me it wasn't a place for a novice skier.  I was like, "Good.  Because I'm not that good to be called a 'novice skier.'"

I've only been skiing like 5 times.  But my second time was at Arapahoe.  I could be mistaken, but it's pretty much all difficult trails.  Not much if you're not a good skier.  I ended up getting sick.  So with the elevation, any movement was a Herculean effort.  I spent a lot of time laying in the snow trying to cool off.  Ski Patrol kept asking if I was ok and needed help getting up.

Also, it was June 1st and I dressed like a person who hadn't every really been skiing would dress.  For cold weather.  It snowed 3 fresh inches overnight and was about 80 degrees by noon.  People were skiing topless.  Dudes.

Anyway, if you're a good skier, probably a fun place.  If you're not a good skier, it wasn't that fun.
Altitude didn't effect me too much outside of getting winded easily.  Slopes were definitely harder than anything I'd ever been on. Wiped out hard a couple times at the beginning of the day, mainly because the difficulty ratings vary wildly and I just had no idea which ones I could handle comfortably until I tried them. If I went back, I'd know exactly where to go and would feel much more comfortable at that type of gradient.  Great place.
