Oregon road trip (1 Viewer)

Sounds like an awesome time to me, GB! Glad you had fun and yeah, you'll be back!

The In-N-Out in Grants' Pass gets far less traffic than the one closer to Portland in Keizer. That one always has a long long line. Always.

pFreim is awesome, man. They make incredible beers and that spot next to the Columbia is really cool. One of the only places around that serves poutine.

Silver Falls (assuming that's what you meant) is really tough to pull off unless it's your stated destination for the day. Why? Because if you REALLY want to do it right, you take the Trail of 10 Falls which will take you 3-4 hours to complete, but totally worth it and would need to be it's own day, really.

The coast - you nailed it man. It's where the forest meets the sea/ocean and I don't know too many spots like it in the world where you have majestic views of the ocean on one side and splendid, deep forest on the other. Incredible hiking all along the way, whether you want to hike high for the views or hike down to secluded parts along the Pacific that are only accessible by foot, the Oregon Coast is a unique treasure.

How cold was the lake? My wife jumped in once years ago and this Michigan gal said it was the coldest her body had ever been.

Effing cold. Between the height of the drop and the water temp, knocked the breath right out of me. When I emerged there's people sitting there asking you how it was and I was just concerned about trying to breath at that point. We didn't even have towels b/c we weren't even thinking about jumping in while hiking down. I at least had shorts. My girlfriend did it in her underwear. Love that woman's spirit. It felt amazing once we were out of the water and just sitting there on the rocks drying off looking at that beautiful place.

going to Portland for work. will have about 1/2 to explore and then be eating out for 3 nights. any recommendations?

Without knowing likes/dislikes or if there are location restrictions, here's a list of top places within Portland we go to a lot.

Ava Gene's
Eem
Apizza Scholls
Tusk
Navarre
Canard
Kann (might still be tough getting a reservation)
Urdaneta
Screen Door
Ringside
Laurelhurst Market
Montelupo
Paadee
Du's Grill
St. Jack's

Good list, Score. Also might help if you let us know where you're coming from. For example, I think Screen Door is terrific, but if you're a southern man who has dozens of "Screen Door" type restaurants around you, I'd skip. Ringside is a real treat and I think the top steakhouse in Portland, but if you're coming from Chicago or {insert major US city here} it's not not going to offer you anything different (other than probably the best onion rings on the planet).

Haven't been to Kahn, but that's supposed to be the top restaurant in the country right now according to inernet and some guys I listen to on the radio.

That's why I didn't list Matt's BBQ.

I am not hesitant about suggesting pizza though. We have become a top pizza city.

I've been back in Oregon for 3 1/2 years now, but I think I've only been up to Portland for a meal 1-2 times - not counting my parents in Sherwood ordering Dominos when I've been there, or the nephew who insists on Red Robin for his birthday dinner because bottomless fries. He's 28.

Sounds like I need to make more of an effort. Really enjoying Eugene, but it's not a great food town. A few hidden gems, and of course food trucks, but wish there were a few more good options here.

I've never had the pie from Apizza Scholls. :bag:

Next time you're in Sherwood, take a short drive to Tualatin and check out Ancestry Brewing. Easy to pass by as it's very nondescript but their beers are outstanding and they've got a Rueben that's out of this world.

I love a good rueben. We stopped by a cafe heading to umpqua and they made corned beef hash fresh. i love fresh corned beef hash. don't see it too often but i'm also not eating breakfast out much so maybe its around more than i know. their french dip was excellent as well. very little on that stretch so it was a nice place to find . airbnb rv owner recommended it. that guy was a real character. would like to just sit with him at his fire pit just talking about life but i doubt i'll ever be down near crescent city again.

This is great!! I'm from Oklahoma, but my favorite cuisine is Mediterranean/north Africa/middle east type. we are staying near the airport.

We get in around noon on Monday and have the afternoon off. if there was one thing you would tell someone to do (not just food/beer)....what would it be?

Then add Mediterranean Exploration Company and Shalom Y’all to the list. Both excellent Mediterranean restaurants. The latter is a bit closer to the airport.

Theres a cool Moroccan restaurant called Marrakesh too on the east side. The food was just ok but the experience with the belly dancers and sitting on the floor eating with your hands was pretty unique.

Also if you’re looking for a quick, cheap lunch or dinner, there is a food cart called Persian Kabob near PSU that is phenomenal. Not near the airport though.

Things to do might include going to the Colombia river gorge and seeing the waterfalls. Super close to the airport too. If you’re at all an outdoors person, the numerous hikes in the area are beautiful. Just not sure what the state of the falls are since we haven’t had substantial rain since May. GM is probably better at suggesting things to do in the area. I just like to eat and drink mainly.

Today is going to be the last good day of weather for a while. My recommendation outside of food would be to go hit the gorge. In less than 30 minutes you can go check out the Vista House. Stop there for a few minutes and continue the drive past a number of waterfalls and then head back.

I'd recommend this place for Mediterranean food. It's up north so not too far from the airport.

When we were in Portland last summer we had a fantastic meal at the Mediterranean Exploration Company. The food was great but the restaurant was loud as hell. I'd recommend going during off hours.

I'll also 2nd Paadee and Ringside---the only other 2 restaurants on Scoresman's list that I've been to. Both were excellent.

Ken's Artisan Pizza was also very delicious.

Hack has it right - today is gorgeous so I'd definitely visit the Gorge and find a hike or two to waterfalls. Trees are gorgeous right now too.

I grew up and lived in the Pacific Northwest for 25 years. Very little I miss or places id want to visit again. The Columbia River gorge area is one of them. The drive is nice. Multnomah Falls is nice. Another area of fond memory is Lincoln City Beach area. Very nice.
