Colt Lyerla TE - GB just officially signed (1 Viewer)

I think Rodgers is a decent flier option, but I don't think GB is in the habit of playing rookie TEs or WRs very much.... they run a pretty complicated offense and it takes a while to earn the trust of the HC/OC/ARod.

Having typed that, I believe that with their system, they promote/reload from within... so while I wouldn't expect any FF start-able GB rookies this year, next year we could see Adams (or Abb or Janis) starting in 3 WR sets because of the contract statuses of Jordy/Cobb/Boykins... and we could see the Rodgers (or Colt) take over for place holder Quarless.

Jeremy Hill is arguably on a par with off-field issues.

Haven't noticed any outcry about drafting him.
That's a tough argument to make. I don't think Hill is on par at all. Also, Hill was drafted... In the 2nd round mind you. Lyerla was not draft... At all. Many here are presenting this as if Lyerla was actually a better talent than Hill. Yet every NFL team still passed him by. I'm sure those teams all dug I to this pretty well. Better than any of us could for sure. Maybe it's because his issues were significantly worse. Maybe it's because his level of talent is being significantly exaggerated. Either way, the difference is rather startling.
Isaiah crowell got passed by every team, yet some are still high on him...

Yeah, some but not me. Seems like an FBG fad this year to try and prop up these diamond in the rough types.

Crowell and Lyerla both have talent on the football field to be the best in this class at their position if they can straighten out. This isn't really a controversial view. Some might like picks without character risk who have lower ceilings in the 3rd/4th round of their rookie drafts, that comes down to philosophy. I wouldn't really call it a fad because Matt and I (among others) have always emphasized upside/talent over risk in our rookie rankings.

I don't think this is at all true and we've gone down this path earlier, Crowell and Seastrunk rankings. I also don't think NFL teams feel this is at all true. Otherwise they wouldn't let guys who have best in class talent go undrafted. Lots of other guys with problems were drafted. A guy like J. Hill had arguably just as many issues Crowell and he was taken in round 2. I don't think there is anyone that carries with them the level of concern that Lyerla does. Still, it's odd to say a guy who has the best talent at his position was allowed to go completely undrafted. I'm sorry, but I just don't think the NFL allows that to happen. If anyone in the NFL actually believe he had that much ability they would have used a pick on him, even if it was a late pick. The problem isnt favoring upside talent over risk. The problem is overstating the upside compared to the risk. This was the exact problem I had with the predraft rankings and it's still the problem I have with it now. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, Lyerla is being drafted ahead of every TE other than Ebron in dynasty food rafts I've seen. That is ridiculous.

Burfect dropped for a lot of reason and off field was just a part of it. He was never considered the best player at his position.

Nice article, thanks for sharing. Dynasty league I am in won't do rookie draft until July and I am worried he will get pretty expensive by then, assuming he stays out of trouble.

Well, just drafted him in my rookie draft based on his talent and landing spot. This feels more lotto ticket than sound drafting on my part but if he has his head on right (finally) I'm going to score big on this one...

Yeah. Was kinda considered a problem on and off the field and in the classroom while at college. Could be considered "off the field" but in general wasn't a student if the game. With that said, everyone knew he overcame that by being a freak athlete with great instincts. Then he blew up that free pass by having a terrible combine.

Anyway, slightly more factors to him goinng undrafted in my mind.

I just dumped Da'Rick Rodgers for Lyerla. He wasn't drafted in our league at all. I figure if I'm going to gamble on a character risk, why not gamble on one with little to nobody to get past to ascend the depth chart.

Colt Lyerla - TE - Packers

Packers undrafted rookie TE Colt Lyerla's ex-teammate from Oregon and current Eagles WR Josh Huff believes Lyerla can be better than Jimmy Graham and Rob Gronkowski.

The praise doesn't stop with Huff. "Just a monster," Oregon CB Terrance Mitchell said of Lyerla. "Colt is a beast. I don't know how to explain it. A monster, a beast....He could be anything he wants to be." Lyerla went undrafted after a tumultuous college career that saw him quit the team four games into last season. He then got into drugs and was arrested for cocaine possession. The Packers took a chance on the ultra-talented Lyerla. At 6'3/242, he runs a 4.61 forty and posted a 39-inch vertical. Lyerla could make a year-one impact at an unsettled position in Green Bay. He needs to be owned in all Dynasty formats.

People love taking risks on guys with drug issues hoping they will pan out, have those people learned anything yet?
His cost is low and his upside is considerable. Own him a half dozen leagues and if I am wrong, just out a roster spot for a year or two, which is worth rolling the dice on.

That is true but I have seen owners cut players like Clay, Cook and Gates for him. That is considerable risk. Sure it could pay off, but that is a lot of risk for a small chance at a reward.

Lots of Richard Rogers press near the end of OTA's. But with Lyerla no news was good news... When the pads come on in Training Camp, and we see all of the GB tight ends in the pre season I think Colt will separate himself from the pack (pun intended? ) his post catch fluidity is unbelievable, truly looks like an oversized running back out there. Last guy we saw like him was Hernandez. Dude just has to stay clean and he's gonna be real good.

That's a lot to hope for. Rodgers has above average athleticism for the position, so I wouldn't be discounting Mr. Rodgers so easily.

Considerable risk? Perhaps, but Gates is on his last legs and Cook, while talented, is a perennial underachiever. You might have a point with Clay, but the staff here has him ranked at #15 TE dynasty, which traditionally is rather mediocre production. I would cut Cook or Gates for him, Clay maybe/maybe not, but in the leagues I own Lyerla I probably wouldn't do a straight up trade for Clay, as he just doesn't have the potential top tier upside that Colt has.

If you feel that the NFL doesn't allow guys that have best talent to go undrafted how would you explain the below? I'm sure there are more but these jump to mind.

  • Arian Foster
  • London Fletcher
  • Jason Peters
  • Jeff Saturday
  • Jeff Garcia
  • Fast Willie Parker
  • Wes Welker
  • James Harrison
  • Tony Romo
  • Priest Holmes
  • Antonio Gates

Not that it really matters what Huff says, except probably some out there agree. To echo some sentiments above, I don't think the NFL allows a guy to go undrafted who has decent shot of rivaling Jimmy Graham or Rob Gronkowski. The process has errors sometimes, though playing the odds based on draft status means he doesn't have a great chance. Then again, an undrafted tight end doesn't have much less probability of fantasy success than a 4th-7th rounder, many of whom get drafted for blocking duties.

Lyerla blocks very well, possibly better than he pass catches; at least that's my qualitative take from his film. But he had arguably the best work-out among tight ends. So if you put a lot of stock into combine numbers, I could see why you'd like his receiving upside. At such a point, in the fourth round of your rookie draft, I look for that shot in the dark. Having not much more value than a waiver move, your first cut when your kicker is on bye, just go for it all. Why not the tight end Josh Huff thinks can be the next big thing? After all, Lyerla does fall into a good situation with an opportunity to see the field early in his career. But if the Packers cut him, I will too.

Packers undrafted rookie TE Colt Lyerla was relegated to the scout team on the third day of training camp.

Lyerla is at the bottom of the depth chart in a group that includes seven tight ends. The good news for Lyerla is that the tight end spot in Green Bay is the most wide-open position on the team. Lyerla has all the measurables and talent to make a quick climb once the pads come on and preseason games get under way. It's a reminder that Lyerla is a classic boom-or-bust prospect.

Well guess he really isn't that talented like so many thought. You cant be if you are getting demoted already, talent stands out.

Wasn't he considered a raw talent rather than an instant finished product ready for the field? If so, then he shouldn't be dismissed as a bust at this point in time.

quick, list all the undrafted guys who scrubbed out

sure there are exceptions but they are undrafted for a reason.

I dont think this is a death blow to Colt, but he has to earn it

Based on some other stuff I read, it looks like he had some drops and a fumble. That's about right for him.

keenan allen was downright invisible in training camp last year. i'm not comparing the two, but to make a definitive call on anyone at this stage is more than premature.

Keenan Allen wouldn't have gotten the chance he did without a number of injuries ahead of him. (Turned out to be a good thing for San Diego as he's better than the guys who got injured).

If you have Lyeria on your roster instead of Richard Rodgers, you probably backed the wrong horse.

the injuries that gave allen a chance are irrelevant. he wasn't doing anything of note throughout the preseason.

i'm carrying both rodgers and lyerla in a dynasty right now and sitting back to watch how things shake out.

Packers undrafted TE Colt Lyerla suffered a leg injury in Saturday's scrimmage.

Lyerla was carted off and spotted on crutches after practice. This has potential to be a serious injury. More will be known when the Packers update his status.

He seemed to be buried behind guys anyway.

Not really showing much in camp yet while Bostick and Rodgers got the press and Quarless just held on steady.

His injury came about as he leapt over a standing defender trying to make a play. Dumb in practice.

And had a very underwhelming training camp thus far.
Exactly. He was on the outside looking in. I this injury is anything remotely serious, this will allow the Packer to stash him on IR for another year of development and maturity.

Exactly. He was on the outside looking in. I this injury is anything remotely serious, this will allow the Packer to stash him on IR for another year of development and maturity.
Yeah...im betting they will play it up more serious and try to do such a thing. Makes sense for them.

His injury came about as he leapt over a standing defender trying to make a play. Dumb in practice.

Up until the 53 man roster is set a player has to clear waivers before you can IR him.

Nobody wanted to touch him the first time around. And now he's due for an MRI per Tyler Dunne of the Journal Sentinel. Thinking clearing waivers won't be a problem. With a logjam at TE he was a long shot. Sucks for him at the moment but in the long run it may be to the Packers benefit and his benefit. Assuming, that is, he can stay on the straight and narrow path for a year.

Based on his performance so far in training camp I doubt any team will claim him. However, what about Abbrederis? Will he have to clear waivers before they put him on IR. How will the Packers handle this?

My guess is they cut Matt Flynn at the 53 man deadline with the agreement the are bringing him back. Put Abbrederis on the IR and bring back Flynn. ;-)

I think Bostick earns the starting spot in camp to be honest. Quarless ain't much and non of the other guys appear ready to do much.
