Colts trade for Booger McFarland (1 Viewer)

If they were still top 5, and he was the starting DT, what made him "stink"? Are you basing this off of lower stats?I mean, I would be happy if the Colts D improved and Booger didn't register a tackle. There is more to playing Nose than tackles IMHO. If it allows your LBs to go unblocked and they make the tackles, that is fine by me.Help me understand why Booger "stinks", please? Serious question.
He doesn't stink, it's just a lot of "glass half empty" and general negative mentality in this forum. I guarantee you he is better than anyone else on the DL in stopping the run. That alone makes him worth adding, even for a late 2nd rd pick. Now back to your regularly scheduled program.

Seriously, don't even get me wound up here. I could write a book on how Tony Dungy took a potential multiple Super Bowl winner and ended up doing nothing more with it than reaching one NFCCG, and getting absolutely annilhated at the hands of the Eagles in the playoffs in back to back years.
Did you do this in subsequent posts or should I quit reading? If you did pls forward copies to Irsay, TIA.Re. McFarland, I agree they overpaid, but also agree that at least they are trying SOMETHING...their run D is pathetic and there aren't exactly a lot of FA DTs who are likely to make much of a diff, even on that pathetic squad. McFarland might not, but wtf worth a shot. PS and oh btw contract details anyone.....

Booger isn't a nose tackle. He's supposed to be a penetrating, disruptive force from the undertackle position. He has shown flashes of that ability, but has disappointed for the most part. He doesn't regularly disrupt the pocket or draw double teams. He probably will help the Colts some, but he's unlikely to be a huge improvement. And the Bucs will have a shot at getting an awful good player with a late second round pick. They've liked Ellis Wyms much better than Booger for awhile now and paid him handsomely this past offseason. Booger was expendable.

Booger is signed through 2008. 2007 salary: 5.5M2008 salary: 6.85M:X

What exactly is your argument? Do you understand how cap-strapped the Bucs were after 03? Do you realize how many premium draft picks they gave up for Gruden? Do you realize the picks Rich McKay gave up for Kenyatta Walker? Do you realize the Gruden was able to take the same exact team (plus the addition of Keenan McCardell) and do somethingDungy was absolutely incapable of doing? If you're just going to make an ignorant drive-by comment, don't act shocked to get called on the carpet for it.

And then when you say "subsequent suckage", I guess you leave out the 11-5 season and division title last year, right?

Seriously, the Bucs went multiple years without any premium draft picks and little to no cap room (and the cap room they had, they were forced to spend on oline help due to the disaster that was left there by the previous regime) -- I could go on all day about this if you like, but I assume you won't have much of a rebuttal, except "GRUDEN SUCKS OMG".

It's easy to paint with broad brushstrokes. Let me know when you actually have some insight to add.
For those that don't know, from the six drafts between 1998 and 2003, the Bucs selected exactly TWO first round picks, due to all the picks given up for Keyshawn and Gruden and trading up for Kenyatta Walker. Those two picks were Anthony McFarland and Kenyatta, who have been average at best. They also did not have second round picks in 01, 02, and 04.That's why the defense is old, we haven't been able to replace any of them. And the offense is young because they've all been drafted in the last 2-3 drafts.

Anyway, bully for the Colts if Booger helps them out. A 2nd round pick and a bunch of cleared cap space is more than I could have hoped for if I'm the Bucs. Good job finding a team desperate enough to pay that price.

Good posting in here by Andrew and Jene.

I agree it was a necessary move by the Colts, even a good move considering the plight of their Dline -- I'm just speaking from a Bucs perspective in regards to Booger. It just never really worked out here the way it could've.

Without reading all the posts in this thread, why "didn't it work out here the way it could've"? If memory serves, he was a pretty good player from time to time.

Jene's post #53 said it best. They were paying him to be the next Warren Sapp at the "premier" under tackle position. In the Tampa 2 defense, that position has to be disruptive, making plays and making a difference, not just being a "pretty good" fat guy taking up space. For example, Tommie Harris for the Bears, or a young Warren Sapp on the Bucs.Plus he was always injured. Him and Brian Kelly must be best friends, with all the time they've spent in the trainer's room together. It's just too bad we couldn't get a 2nd rounder for BK, too.Why wasn't he disruptive? That's beyond my knowledge, really. It certainly can't all be blamed on injuries. As to whether it was desire, work ethic, talent, skill, who knows?

1 game sample size, but Booger sure made a difference yesterday! His 2 tackles are a good example of how someone doesn't need to be a stat stuffer to be a difference maker!

Portis was held in check.

Betts got a ton of garbage-time yards when Booger was out of the game.

GB Polian for this move and Go Colts!

C'mon people...dig a little deeper.Monte Kiffen and Rod Marinell were still around post-Dungy, the Bucs D was perenial top-5...and Booger still stunk.

Let me count the ways:- He never put any pressure on the QB...he hasn't had a sack since early '05.- He couldn't stop the run...NFL teams have known since Sapp left to attack the Bucs Run D up the middle- He was oft injured- He never came up big in big games, including missing the entire '02 playoffs- He wasn't even enough of a presence to draw a double-team anymore...that moving to Hovan.Honestly, I like Booger and think he is a great personality and a decent guy, and like Indy and hope he does well there. But he was a complete NON-FACTOR in Tampa and making way too much money to do so.Maybe a change of scenery will help, but I just don't see much of an upside.

I know it's only two games...and Denver has a great running game...and the Colts D needed something....

I watched the game, but didn't really pay attention to his PT. I do however recall Mike Bell running all over the Colts in the 2nd half, and mostly up the middle.

Then I saw this from John Clayton:

Credit Shanahan with making the right offensive adjustments. The Colts' defense held up well against the run in the first half, limited the Broncos to 47 yards on 15 carries. But in the first half, the Broncos tried to run more to the outside. In the second half, Shanahan used more power runs to the inside with undrafted rookie Mike Bell and they gained 180 rushing yards in the second half, 136 by Bell.

So, honestly, how do the Colt faithful feel about Booger so far? Will the offense be so good it doesn't matter?

Interestingly, the Colts have been using Booger as a NT rather than an undertackle. Booger played relatively better at NT in his time in TB before Warren Sapp left, and it appears Dungy hopes he'll return to that form. The problems in run defense go deeper than the defensive tackles, though. The defensive ends are weak against the run, Gilbert Gardner isn't anything special on the strong side and the safety position has been a revolving door.

He was playing next to Sapp when Sapp was still Sapp, right? Brad Culpepper also looked like an All-Pro in that situation.

While I don't disagree with the characterization that they ran more inside, they ran a lot of counters. That is what this team really struggles against. I don't think that is an indictment of McFarland, but more of the LBs.

Honestly doesn't matter to me how he's doing in Indy, Ellis Wyms has been more productive in two games than this guy was in two years.

Loving the trade even more now, even if the Bucs are going tanksville. At least they can stock up for 07.

The Colts must be happy with their end of this deal - I don't believe they would have won the Super Bowl without this trade, espeically since Montae Reagor got hurt shortly after this trade happened. This trade will be looked at as a big win/win for both teams when it is said and done.

Not to mention that he gave the D a leader up front that knew firsthand what it took to get a ring.

This trade reminded me of when Sapp left Tampa. Every Tampa fan was talking about how washed up Sapp was and that Booger was the present/future.

I think Booger will have a productive career in Indy. Hopefully, Tampa uses the #64 pick to improve their team.

:lmao: :) at comparing Booger to Sapp.Booger was doing nothing, NOTHING, in Tampa the past few years. It was time for him to go. The guy either didn't care or didn't have it any longer. No idea how he played in Indy all year, but the only time I noticed him in the playoffs was the KC game and the sack in the Super Bowl. Either way, it was worth it to Tampa to get another #2 in the draft. And if it was worth it to Indy to get a ring, then even better.

Hi Capella,

I am not sure why you think I was comparing the two players or why that would be so hilarious. I was simply saying that most of the Buc fans were more than happy to see Sapp go because Sapp was past his prime and in obvious decline while McFarland was going to anchor the DL.

As soon as McFarland got traded, Buc fans flipped on him quicker than the Democratic Caucus did on Dean '04. Either way, that Indy run D rose to the challenge when it mattered the most. I am sure Indy is more than happy to send the #64 to the Bucs for a rejuvenated McFarland and a ring. I am sure you can appreciate that considering the picks the Bucs gave up for Gruden and a ring.

Here is a little piece that was posted by Scott Reynolds on the Pewter Report message boards. It is a quote from Booger that was in the Tampa Tribune, and it should give a little insight as to why many Buc's fans don't care much for this guy.

http://bbs.pewterreport.com/index.php?topic=5008.0

From this morning's Tampa Tribune: "You've got a Hall of Fame defensive tackle in Warren Sapp, who did all he did and look how they treated him," McFarland said. "Look how they treated John Lynch. So nothing in the game of football surprises me."

This guy is unreal. McFarland is poor-mouthing the Bucs about Warren Sapp, yet HE WAS THE REASON Sapp wasn't re-signed because he got the big DT contract. McFARLAND was the one who wanted to play under tackle NOT nose tackle. He wanted Sapp out of there so he could play the featured 3-technique spot. He got his wish and he flat out stunk.

McFARLAND was the one who wanted the big defensive tackle contract and got it ... yet I didn't see him offering to take a paycut or restructure in 2004 in order to help bring Sapp back. You can't have it both ways, Booger. We've seen Derrick Brooks time and time again restructure his deal to help keep players like Mike Alstott around. Yet McFarland didn't lift a finger to help the Bucs keep Sapp or Lynch, who were both salary cap casualties.

McFarland got the money and the big contract and turned into a fat cat in Tampa. The funny thing is that Indy traded for him and then Tony sticks him where? At the prestigious under tackle spot? Nope. He's back at nose tackle where he belongs and I'm glad Bruce Allen shipped his overrated ### out of Tampa Bay.

Maybe it's just me, and maybe it's just because I know the attitude of most Bucs fans about McFarland, but he's never seemed like "one of the team" on the Colts. He never really made an impact with the defense - they were just as bad against the run with him as they were without him. The turn-around in Indy's defense seemed to hinge more on Bob Sanders health than Bogger's presence.

Even in all the post-Super Bowl interviews I've seen with him, including the huge rally they had in the RCA Dome Monday night, McFarland still seems very much like an outsider on this team. I would not be surprised to see him traded, released, or benched in favor of someone else next season.

All year the Colts were the laughing stock of the league on rush defense. When i was writing the weekly threads for RB I would see that there was one missing ingredient to the Colts and it was not Booger McFarland. This defense got good in a hurry when Bob Sanders finally made it back from injury. No Sanders, no SB Rings...no Booger, possibly still OK in that playoff run. When the Bears lost Safety Brown for the season I went on record as saying how hard of a loss that would be to that defense. Next you throw in Tommie Harris and you have a recipe for disaster if they don't commit 7 and 8 men to the box...they went with 4 and 5 in the box during the SB and Manning, Rhodes, and Joseph Addai tore them up underneath and through the line all night. I'm not trying to pick a fight, but Capella along with the rest of the Bucsfans are not incorrect in saying McFarland was not a factor. Look at the year the Bucs won the SB...who was standing on the sideline in street clothes while the Bucs defense mauled the Raiders? McFarland...and you can see him in the SB highlights ESPN runs every year. Booger has made no impact since hitting the NFL...he is average, truly.

Maybe this was the real secret to the Colts D http://www.asslete.com/index.php?option=co...=view&id=38

Too funny. But in all seriousness, you are correct in your assessment. Sanders was seveth among ALL defensive players throughout the playoffs in tackles, and led (along with a few others) with the most Ints (2).

how? he didn't play in the 02/03 playoffs.

All Gruden has done is ride Dungy's hard work to a SB victory and subsequent suckage.
 way to show off that GED guy.
Is he that wrong?
Yes.
 If Tampa gave Dungy time they would have had a ring and still been winning today... Enjoy your return to mediocrity.
yea right. that salary cap disaster would've just magically disappeared with dungy at the helm.

Average (and a guy who knows the system) is still better than Darrell Reid and Dan Klecko, one of whom would have been a starter on the Colts DL if they didn't make the trade. With one of them as a starter, they would not have won the Super Bowl even with Sanders.
