Normally, I would not consider this news and there certainly has been speculation about this on our board, but it just ran on NFL.com this past hour, so I am curious if it has legs:

Muhammad's agent in discussions with Panthers

Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Looking to get help for receiver Steve Smith, the Carolina Panthers could bring back an old favorite.

The agent for receiver Muhsin Muhammad said Monday that he's been in discussions with the Panthers and a few other teams. Muhammad was released by the Chicago Bears last week.

Muhammad was Carolina's second-round draft pick in 1996. He spent nine seasons with the Panthers before being released in a salary-cap move.

Muhammad is a physical possession receiver who could complement the speedy, undersized Smith. But Muhammad has been plagued by drops in his career and turns 35 in May.

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney could not be reached Monday. The Panthers normally don't comment on negotiations with players.

I would love to see them get someone a little younger than ancient, but it is not a super WR market and they proably need to give Jarrett another year to develope.

He would probably be an improvement over their #2 Wr but that isn't saying much. I could see this happening though. Makes sense.

Rumor has it that they've agreed on the parameters of a 3 yr deal around $1.5m per.
That would be great. Cap friendly for the Panthers who are not in a great Cap situation and all they need is someone to put up 700-800 yards and 4-6 TDs on the year to draw coverage from Steve Smith.

The Rock Hill Herald reports there was an Internet story on Sunday that a deal between the Panthers and free-agent WR Muhsin Muhammad was "close". That's at least premature, and anyone who's expecting an announcement on anything today's going to be disappointed. The reality is, he's about to turn 35, caught 40 balls last year, and he knows his value's highest here. So there's plenty of reason for him and his representatives to try to push the issue along. But, the Panthers have turned cold toward the beloved vets they used to embrace. That doesn't help Muhammad's case, and it could mean he's in for more of a wait than he was hoping for. This thing could still happen this week. But there's no real reason to hurry, because there doesn't seem any motivation for the Panthers to do so -- in terms of other teams competing for his services.

not so fast.....
