commish & drafting (1 Viewer)

i love commishing one of the leagues im in, but i've got to admit that the duties of being commish (noting picks and keeping the draft moving) leaves me at a dissadvantage compared to the other owners since they have the time to look at the board and see trends and other stuff that i don't have time to see. anyone else who serves as a commish have any tips on how to successfully manage both?

We use our hosting service (MFL) to track the draft and then find a draft moderator (usually a wife or friend of an owner) to capture the picks and monitor the clock...as commish my duties are only slightly greater than other owners on draft day...

In our league we have no time limit on picks (we do a live draft at my house) and the other owners allow me to slow it down when ever I need to. They let me catch up and look at things when I ask. If things do get to slow once again the other owners are there to bust balls and make sure the guy gets his pick up in a more timely manner.

As for a tip, if you are having a live draft with a board I would suggest having someone put the picks for the league. Maybe one of the hottie wives or a chick from your local "club".

a laptop can really make things easier.

if you have wireless access, or host the draft from home you can access your league site.

if not, the Draft Dominator software offered here is excellent I hear. log the picks on that, enter them in the site later

There are other options as well.

A draft kit, usually runs you around $15, has stickers and a big board. we used one of these last year for the first time, worked out pretty well. We had the guy who was picking walk up and put his own sticker on the board every time.

as already mentioned, try to get a girlfriend/wife to help out as a league secretary. Free drinks usually are a good motivator when enlisting volunteers here.

Finally, take breaks.

Schedule a beer/bathroom break every 3, 5 or 7 rounds so you can get caught up.

I am going to use the drafting software found here FFLM. It is compatable with MyFantasyLeague. I plan on having each owner go to the computer which is hooked up to the big screen and make their own picks. Then later upload the teams to MFL.

For our auction, we have a big board that everyone can see, and the player stickers that come with it (from CBS  ).

I assign several owners one position each to put up. If a QB is up for bid, the QB guy gets the sticker ready and no one else has to do anything (except bid :goodposting: ).

At the end of each round or two, everyone must add up their own totals to make sure it all jives. I will also assign a couple of other owners to add up everyones totals as a failsafe.

These methods can be knocked, I'm sure, but...it works for us.

As a side note, I'll mention that in one league the commish insists on doing virtually everything. Everyone sits around staring at each other while he is constantly keeping up. Then again, it's a draft, so by definition there's a lot of sitting around. :lmao:

We have someone who handled the pick tracking and the sticker on the board placement in our league. This is always the last place team in the league responsibility - He can hire someone or get his wife/girlfriend or whatever.

My assistant commish and I work the draft... we update our website with the draft results and also put the sticker on the draft board... guys at the swing picks usually come up and help with the stickers while they have the long wait...

Draft?

What's a draft?

Auction baby....the ONLY way to go!

Hire an auctioneer (disinterested party) and pay him with beers...

Hire an auctioneer staff (a couple of wives) and pay them later....

Give the auctioneer complete control over the procedings.

Give him instructions to keep things moving....

...enjoy the auction.

Friendly League:

We do a LAN with Yahoo's draft software. Draft starts on time and end within an 1hr 15 minutes for a 20 round IDP league. Drinks & discussion after. Works well. People should be logged on and ready 10 minutes prior to yahoo draft time. They should not select there player too close to time limit (90 secs) due to lag. 1 minute picks recommended. The thrill of this pace is a rush and people are still feeling it for a while afterwards.

This year the league got so big we are doing back to back drafts for splitting the leagues and future ladder setup to move between. Commish duties are done before the draft. However the draft goes stands by the software.

We did it live the first year. Draft to start at 8pm. Last drafters arrived at 9pm. 2 couldn't make it. 2 no shows. 2 left early. Commish drafted all or parts of 6 teams of 12. Draft ended 5 am.

With the way we do it now, there's a party, an option for live drafters that can't make it (live online,) an option (drafts from yahoo default list or thier list) for drafters that can't draft at that time. Pretty good for a 'friendly league.'

Bar League:

Commish writes teams on legal pad.

Drinkers get rowdy the longer the pick and time/bad pick and late people.

Phoning no shows slows it up. Present drafters adopt and orphan to phone to help commish

Nobody's complained since we've started.

I have to try this this year. I get some help during the Auction, but I am continually getting overwhelmed and not keeping up with my strategy, which is resulting in horrible teams lately for me.

Get a good draft board and have people post their own picks.
That's what we do for my only live draft.
This is the only way to do it. There is only one sticker for each player so no risk or a player being taken twice; as commish, you really do not have to do anything during the draft. Just take the board home with you and enter the picks in on whatever host you use for your league.
