Concerts thread - FBG's lovin' live music, we're back in action! (1 Viewer)

Not the biggest fan of festivals, but going to When We Were Young in Vegas in October. My daughter is going with us and it will be her first time in Vegas after turning 21. She wants me to teach her to gamble.

I just bought Friday Sonic Temple tickets that’s gonna be a long day
Probably leave Detroit for Columbus at 7 AM and assume we’ll stay for close (Metallica night but have seen them recently so maybe bail early)

Need to find a hotel like 30-60 min north of there

roverkid and I have seen a lot of shows together. Most recently LCD Soundsystem. She'll know better.

Heh, I figured something hip like that. Nice that you can do that together. Sounds like a great way to spend time with your daughter. Those bands tend towards the punk/emo side of things, I'm guessing. I saw the flyer with The Gaslight Anthem (which is more singer-songwriter than gutter punk), Taking Back Sunday, Weezer, and a bunch of others that even I recognize and listened to at one point in life. Should be fun if you're even remotely into that sort of thing. Peace and godspeed, man.

Kim Deal (of the Pixies and the Breeders) last night at The Stone Pony.

Her new album is pretty mellow so it wasn’t a rocking show but tHe band sounded great and included a horn and string sectIons creating a lush and full sound. I like the new album a lot so didn’t mind most of the show’s songs were from it.

Check out Mansfield if it isn't too far out of the way, location of Shawshank prison.

I saw a report from Pollstar today indicating the 2024 average price for a ticket to a top 100 touring artist concert was $135.92. Not a huge increase over 2023, but compared to 2019 ($96.17), ticket prices are up over 40%. I'm pretty much done with large venue acts anymore, partly because of cost but mostly just because I can't handle large crowds in my old age. I was looking into the pricing thing and found an interesting article from last summer - Data Reveals When to Buy Concert Tickets for the Best Prices. I used to research tours and always get my tickets through pre-sales within minutes of them going online, months before the show, and for a decade or so at least that was the best way to get good seats at reasonable prices. I'm sure for most this is a "no #### Sherlock" situation, but this report indicates "Concert-goers spent 33% less than average on tickets when purchasing them on the day of a concert, and 27% less than average the day before." This isn't necessarily all secondary market pricing. A story in our local paper today which sent me down this rabbit hole interviewed a guy who bought Stevie Wonder tickets the day they went on pre-sale and paid $261 each, with fees, $1,277.71 total for four seats. He checked back online three hours later and saw seats directly next to his for $129.50. I've had this same experience many times in the last few years. This is the new world of dynamic pricing. I can picture that meeting at Ticketmaster years ago when they realized the most fanatical fans were the ones getting in early and getting the best seats at the best prices. Of course that's backwards from the seller's perspective - those are the motivated fans, the exact people they need to squeeze hard to pay the highest prices possible.

@CletiusMaximus
Interesting report, thanks for sharing.
I used the wait and buy secondary tickets close to the show last year with mixed results. When I had time to check prices frequently I did well as good deals get scooped up quickly.
CashorTrade doesn’t cover all the bands but that’s were I had my best success.

With that said I’m gravitating to smaller venues , cheaper tix and lesser known bands.

Interesting. I know it's getting expensive but I'll keep paying. I have tried to stop doing the presale stuff, only because the availability for seated venues isn't great. If there's a show I really want to go to, I won't have the patience waiting until day of.

If it’s a show I really want to see I’m doing my best to get tickets via presale or onsale date even though I’m pretty sure those crooks have surge pricing or something now

For a lot of other shows where I’m like “that would be a cool show but if I miss it no big deal” I’ll usually wait and try to get resale tickets. For one I prefer not to tie up the money 6 months in advance especially because my plans can change. Or if it’s an outdoor show I may wait and check the weather

I’ve had mixed results with price, I think it depends on if you want good seats or just want to get in the door. If you don’t care where you sit you can definitely find some deals. I will check periodically to see if there is something at an acceptable price and then the week of really start checking.

There’s definitely several shows I will probably skip out on though just because I don’t want to pay hundreds of dollars for a pair of tickets

Ticket prices are ridiculous, indeed. Over the past two years I've skipped a few bands I would have normally seen due to insane prices - The Cure, and The Rolling Stones.
My wife really wanted to see NIN, so when tickets when presale, she stayed in the queue. Tickets were very pricey (imho), and I would have passed on them entirely as I've seen them a few times in the past, admittedly it's been a few decades, but after getting kicked out of the queue twice in presale, she was finally able to get a few decent tickets for like $175 each :loco: She was afraid that if we waited until after market, they'd be nearly double that after fees. This is about the price point where I'll pass, because for $400-$500 (two tickets, parking, a beverage or two, and God forbid if she wants to wait in the merch lines), I can pretty much buy every album they've ever put out and listen to it in the comfort of my own home without having to fight traffic and crowds. But, yes i'm an old and admit as much.

Anywhooooo,...saw the Violent Femmes last night. They played their entire first album, and then their entire second album. Tickets stated, doors open at 6:00, band starts at 8:00 p.m. (no opener). Okay, cool, this was a smaller venue and parking is kind of a *****, so I figured we'd get there at 7:00 or so and be good. We did, walked into the place at 7:15 and they're already playing. WTF. Fortunately, they played their second album first, took a break and then played their first album and then an encore. They were done by 9:00 p.m. WTF. I'm old, but I aint' that old.
Band was okay, but I mean, I've never heard any song of their second album. Their first album is fantastic, and then they've released one song since I think I've ever heard off. Pretty precipitous fall off after the great first album. Tickets and parking, two beverages, all in was less than $150, so I mean, that's reasonable, imho.

Saw Post Malone in concert last night. Had a huge band backing him with country elements (fiddle player and pedal steel). I’ve been a casual fan for quite a while, but I was blown away by this live performance. With his hop hop hits now rearranged for a full backing band it was a seamless transition from hip hop to country throughout the show. The guy is freaking talented. And so genuinely nice and appreciative throughout the show. I am now a big fan.

Fun fact, Post Malone is the only artist in history to have #1 albums on the rap, rock and country charts. And he’s only 29 (even though he looks 40).

Now the fact that a 50-something is crowing about him may spell doom for his career, but man the guy sure can reinvent himself like no one’s business. Up next . . . Nirvana!

FWIW, Cure tickets were reasonably priced compared to a lot of others in 2023 and 2024. I do agree with you. It’s crazy. Skipping NIN all together here in Tampa as a result as tickets being stupid expensive.

Yeah, Robert Smith fought and won on Ticketmaster fees so the prices were actually affordable. And he also made sure merch was cheaper (think I paid $20 for a t-shirt). I was also in the queue for NIN and passed due to the prices. Will try to check the market as we get closer to the date in August.

New Primus tour this summer. Definitely going to that one

Sailing The Seas of Cheese was one of my favorite records my second senior (post-graduate) year of high school. Can still remember driving in Maine in winter, going to a hockey tournament and listening to "Here Come The Bastards." Quite the album.

My kid plays the Bass and we’ve seen Les solo and with Primus on the Sessanta Tour but that was a pretty limited set so looking forward to taking him to see a full show

My wife and I went to a couple of shows recently. First up, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, with Tesky Brothers opening. We’ve seen both before at festivals and wanted to see them indoors and as the lead. Tesky Bros put on a good show, solid if unspectacular. Rateliff and company were excellent now that they have a bit more material and comfort on stage. He could still use some work on engaging with the crowd. He even brought up a local First Natiom performer, William Prince, to do a duet, which was a nice touch.

This week we saw Heart with Cheap Trick opening. CT was much better than the last time we saw them but they are definitely showing their age. Heart was phenomenal. I forgot how heavy they could be. Ann was in a wheelchair as she had some kind of accident on tour but she can still belt it out like nobody’s business. All around fantastic show that brought me back to the old school arena rock days.

Ann is also a recent cancer survivor. Still has the pipes. ♥️

Ridiculously so! Especially sitting in the chair the whole time, I was shocked. Add to that, she is in her mid 70s (I’m guessing) and she just blew me away.

it’s all about calculating risk when determining the best time to buy tickets. If it’s an artist that always sells out and it’s must see I’ll always do presales. You don’t want to try secondary markets for acts like Taylor Swift. Even concerts like George Strait/Chris Stapleton had my presale seats going for $500 more than I paid for them on presale. I don’t like floor seats so usually go for lower level on the sides. Those tickets never get cheaper for popular acts. If it’s a small venue to me it’s even more important to get tickets with presale. Simple logic - fewer seats mean fewer resale opportunities.

If you just want to get in and don’t care so much about sitting in specific sections for many acts/venues I’d wait until a few days before to start looking. Went to a Dead show and some of their fans are masters at getting in for cheap. If it’s an act that is playing in a bigger venue than normal or is an aging/non superstar act than they likely won’t sell out. Wait. Especially if you only need 1 or 2 tickets.

One thing I’ll never do again is buy hard tickets at the venue from people selling. I paid $400 for 2 to see the Stones at the Hollywood Bowl years ago. Tickets scanned, walked in, got a drink while Joss Stone opened, then sauntered to our seats. Only to get escorted out by yellow jacketed security officers. The people in the seats said 2 of their 4 tix were stolen, so they went to the box office with the receipt and got them reissued. Nothing we could do. Total scam. I’ll only buy digital tickets transferred to my Ticketmaster account now.

Two new shows since last we checked in:

Cypress Hill (Souls of Mischief opens) and The Wu Tang Clan (Run the Jewels opens). I've already seen Cypress at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, so I know that's going to slap. Never saw Wu Tang, so I'm pretty jacked about that. I don't like stadium shows, but I had to make an exception here.

By the way, don't miss a chance to listen to (or see them live) Russian Circles. Saw them with Pelican a couple weeks back and that show was a banger.

My daughter got the two of us Weird Al tickets for a show in June.

Best daughter ever! :nerd:
Been to a lot of shows over the years and realized this is one I have not made it to. And I am a bit sad about that.

Got my tickets to the Nine Inch Nails - Peel It Back Tour 2025 for September in LA (Kia Forum, formerly the Great Western Forum). My daughter wants to go with me.
So far we've seen Depeche Mode and Olivia Rodrigo together.
Still undecided on Weird Al. Want to go but also $$

Heard this morning that Garbage is touring later this year and have a new album coming out. Might try to catch them if its a smaller venue and reasonable tickets.

Yeah saw that Garbage one, the Detroit show is at smaller venue. Probably end up passing but we’ll see

Did grab pit tickets for Primus today though

Just looked, Garbage isn't coming to SoCal on this tour. Maybe because they are in LA for the Cruel World 2025 show in May. Too bad.

Outside of 2 maybe 3 songs, don't know too much Primus. Do like the 2 songs though.

Saw Yankees legend, Bernie Williams and Friends play at the Stone Pony last night.

It was mostly smooth jazz, not necessarily my thing, but enjoyable. Williams is a talented guitarist and his band was superb.

He did a Q&A interview first where he talked about baseball and his music.

Fun night.

Always a good night at the pony. Its incedible how small that place is and to think the boss was rocking out there on the regular.

The bakers dozen coming up. Didn't think I'd go to that many other than knowing I wanted to see a lot of the dmb but then the announcements started rolling in. Was really excited when String Cheese added a local show. Had a lot of fun seeing them for the 1st time this year. Should've checked then out a lot sooner. Also pumped that John Butler decided to come back to tour in the states. He's such an amazing talent. And then there's Trey solo which I've been eagerly waiting for again. So some of the typical rotation, some I'm especially excited for and then the continued growth of my dmb history.

Dave Matthews Band x 4
Jason Isbell and the 400 unit
String Cheese
Dispatch/John Butler/Donovan Frankenreiter x 2 - that's a great trio for one concert
Caamp
Trey solo
OAR
Tedeschi Trucks
Head and Heart - new band that I came across recently and its at the stone pony summer stage which I like a lot

Jason Isbell and the 400 unit
Is this at the Count Basie?

I'm venturing out of Asbury Park for a show for the first time in 5 years for this one. Shot the lock of my wallet to buy second row seats (at $250 each; $600 total after fees),

I'm a huge fan and his show at Summer Stage at the Pony 3 years back was amazing.

It's about a 10 minute walk for me which makes it even sweeter.

For a small venue, I've seen some major acts there including" Drive-By Truckers; Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real; Dinosaur Jr.; The WallFlowers (with a guest appearance from Jon Bon Jovi); and many other shows.

I'll be there next Friday for Melvin Seals and JGB.

Yup. That was the Little Wing show we talked about. That was my 1st time seeing them and this will now be #9. Those are great seats and not too bad of a price.

I especially love the outdoor venue. A block from the beach with surprisingly really good sound. The only thing I don't like is the early curfew but its understandable. You're a lucky man.

Live in NJ and love the Stone Pony. Have only been there twice (I think), once to see the Ramones/Frank Black inside and once to see The Pixies outside. Just a great place to see a show at.

Any Michael Schenker/UFO fans here? Michael Schenker is doing his "My UFO Years" tour this fall in the US. Playing mostly small venues in small towns. Gonna catch him in a Chicago suburb in September. I've seen MSG a few time and UFO twice without Michael. Big fan of both bands, but more of a fan of Schenker. One of my favorite guitarists. Great composer and a really unique style.

He put out a "UFO years" album last year with various people sitting in. He's gonna tour with Erik Grönwall, a Swedish singer I never heard of before, but the dude sounded great on Mother Mary from the album. Sounds a lot like a young Phil.

Love UFO. I'm going to have to check this out, hopefully he'll be playing at a venue close to me.

ETA: No MI dates 😟

Kid Rock / Chris Janson tonight. Can't believe the wife agreed to go.
Seen Kid a bunch of times. Always a good show. He’s now joined a bunch of artists I won’t see because they insist on talking politics vs just freaking doing what we paid them do. Started with Ted Nugent. He’s the worst. And by the way it’s both sides. Just freakin sing

I have seen both, Nuge back in high school I think so damn near 30 years ago. I don’t remember him being so political back then or maybe I just didn’t care

Only seen Kid Rock once, kinda felt like he mailed it in at the show I went to, but I also came in much less sober than i probably should have for a Kid Rock show

Grabbed Garbage tickets, didn’t realize aisle seats were like $20 premium 🙄

So like $80+ a ticket and we are only couple rows from the back. Little more than I wanted to spend but I think I’m going to make them a birthday gift for the wife

Could have gotten a little closer but I prefer aisle when I can get them
