Concerts thread - FBG's lovin' live music, we're back in action! (4 Viewers)

Saw Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit tonight (Mother's Day). Amazing concert.
The 400 Unit has undergone some personnel changes, but they are still an amazing band to see live.
Great mix of songs off the new release and ones from previous albums. Even a Drive-By Truckers song!
Sadler Vaden still on guitar? Dude's amazing.
Jason can play himself.

I saw them two summers ago and they were amazing - have second row seats to see them again in July.

Did he play an acoustic set?
The new album is just him solo with an acoustic guitar.

Bendigo Fletcher on Friday night. This is a band my wife and I found at a festival and have seen a few times since. I'd recommend giving them a listen. This show was full of talkers, though. My wife and I were probably among only a handful of people over 40.

My son and I went to Sonic Temple yesterday in Columbus. Alice In Chains canceled their tour a few days ago so that was a bummer. Metallica closed and they were awesome, even though it's not my usual thing.

A lot of the other bands we saw were just noise to me. Although did catch a little of Badflower when we first go there any they sounded good.

So much crowd surfing.

No. The 400 Unit accompanied him on all songs. They reworked some songs like Bury Me, Gravelweed, True Believer, Crimson & Clay, etc. with most if not all of the band.
They did Ride To Robert's as part of the encore with just two acoustic guitars.

I lost track of how many times he changed guitars during the concert. That guitar tech got his steps in last night.

AC/DC this Friday in Tampa at Raymond James stadium. Last time I saw them was back in 1996 in Daytona Beach.

The setlist at that '96 show was 21 songs, pretty much all hits. The setlist on the 2025 tour is 21 songs, pretty much all hits.

:headbang:

Wow. I thought Angus Young had died, but I guess he's still touring. Brian Johnson is touring also. Cool.

I saw a guy a couple weeks ago who called out some folks in the crowd for talking during his set. He made some more comments later in the show complaining about it. That always cracks me up but I appreciated it in this case. Small venue - Vincent Neil Emerson. Great show. Years ago I saw Rickie Lee Jones stop a song to call out some talkers in the front rows at a much larger venue - that was awkward.

Yeah, sad. He had dementia, if I recall correctly.

I can confirm that folks in their later 50s are not built for 4-day festivals, but we survived. My wife and I saw a staggering 41 acts, about 22 in full, the rest in part. We were just off the rail for Sevendust and pushed back to about row 15 for Three Days Grace. Had our minds BLOWN when we saw the overview pic of a packed main floor behind us. I am not built for passing 350 LB dude over my head to that was it up close for day one. Tried again during Chevelle on day-4, and just got crushed and bailed. Biggest surprises to me were Hoobatank & Alice Cooper as I had zero expectations for either; both brought it big time. SO much I could share, but to keep it a bit short, I will share my favorite run of bands. I was most excited to see Trust Company and Crossfade. We saw from Ashes to New, quickly moved over to the dual stages to accidentally catch Invent-Animate (fun) on the side rail about 8 deep to see Trust CO (dang they were solid). Then, we stayed for The Devil Wears Prada. Never heard of them, but what FUN. Crown surfers, standing up and surfing on other fans, lead singer asked for a ZIN and got pelted with tons and (luckily) a safe spot for the massive mosh on the other side. THEN, CROSSFADE. Loved them about 10 years ago and this was their first appearance since. They were fantastic and had our minds blown a second time with the crowd size behind us. Planning paid off for Metallica as we were on the first bus each day and were able to secure stadium seats above exits for close and unblocked views. Got to catch Beartooth before and they were amazing. We are HUGE AIC fans and way bummed for their drop (so understandable), but what a great replacement. Sneaky/amazing were Lincoln Park. I would type for days. Already thinking about how to make this happen again next year.

thoughts on Sonic temple Friday

We parked around 11:30 I think. Was kind of a disaster but not terrible
Getting in was a breeze, caught the end of 200 stab wounds and then went over to the VIP area. Forget what the up charge was for VIP but was worth if to me (real bathrooms, dedicated food and merch lines, nice covered tent area)

Ended up catching Peeling Flesh and AngelMaker, not really my thing but enjoyed it

After that I think we tried to catch Testament in the stadium, sound sucked. That’s really my only complaint was the stadium seating, for the headliners it was basically impossible to get a seat and it was like 5 deep for standing room. Pretty much skipped Zombie and Metallica

Other bands we saw were Suicidal Tendencies, liked the set although Mikes vocals aren’t great

Acid Bath was awesome, my kid loves them, I don’t know much of their stuff but really enjoyed it

Also caught Mastadon that Prog metal is definitely more up my alley

Closed the night out with ICP…that was a fun set as well, but I was definitely outside the Faygo zone

Oh yeah DeafHeaven was good too

I was definitely surprised how uncrowded it felt (aside from the stadium). Only other complaint was leaving the parking lot at the end of the night. Oh and cold fish and chips

Otherwise had a blast and was glad my kid got to see his favorite band

Finally recovering from Las Vegas:

Sammy Hagar at the Dolby - GREAT show. Sammy still sounds and moves great for 77. Michael Anthony sounded great too and killed it on bass. Joe Satriani absolutely shredded on guitar. Kenny Aronoff was solid on drums. Tons of energy, great set list (Van Halen, Montrose, Chickenfoot), fun interaction with the crowd. They partied, to. Sammy and Michael took big swigs off of his tequila. Highly recommend seeing this residency.

Dead and Company at the Sphere - first time at the venue, which was mind blowing amazing. Graphics and experience are unmatched. Easy to get in and out of with the walkway from the Venetian. We actually stayed at the Treasure Island, walked across the street to have an early dinner at Yardbird, then just walked into the Sphere. Stairs are steep, saw people struggling to get up and down them. The show itself was good. I'm not a huge Dead fan but respect the music. Mayer's guitar playing was next level. This was a different show. Didn't play all of their hits (Sugaree, etc). Mostly long (really long) jams. The Dead faithful loved it. It was an experience. I'd go back to the Sphere to see a different act for sure.

How’d they sound? I can’t really stand AC/DC. They’ve always annoyed me for some reason.

Just got Metallica tickets for June 6th at RJS. I’d rather go on the 8th when Pantera opens but already seeing the Rays that day.

Anyone seen Metallica on their tour yet? Dudes are all 60+ now. :oldunsure:

Deafheaven is incredible. Obsessed with them. Their new album is perfection.

They were surprisingly good. Brian Johnson isn't quite what he was back in the day, but he still sounds good for the most part and he looked like he was having an absolute blast the entire show.

Between every song, the stage went dark and they disappeared for about a minute or two...my guess is they were getting oxygen or IVs or something, they're not exactly spring chickens. 😄

The only thing I didn't like was Angus did like a 20 minute solo thing after the last song in the set (before their 2 song encore) that went on about 17 minutes too long in my opinion, but other than that the show was great.

AC/DC might be the only rock band I've seen that doesn't have a single ballad in their catalog, they're all pedal to the metal from start to finish.

Didn't realize Kenny Aronoff was still working. Looked it up and he's 72. I first remember him working with John Cougar/Mellencamp. But, he's worked with a ton of artists.

Just saw them a week ago. I'm not a big fan but they were great.

Saw Jelly Roll and Post Malone in Detroit last night. Was supposed to be a family thing, but one daughter decided to tour Europe for a month and the other was sick.
So it was just the wife and I.

Jelly Roll was great. A cool tribute to Bob Seger and then......Eminem. Have never heard anything that loud in my life. Deafening.

Post Malone was not good. Sound crew missed the setup big time. Couldn't understand most of what he was saying / singing. Disappointing.

Saw Hyryder Friday night, often called the midwest's best Grateful Dead cover band. Awesome musicians and I'd call them more than a Dead cover band. Played a variety of things, a couple songs that even I'm not sure what they were but sounded familiar.

Saw these guys again last night. Extremely good.
Just saw them my first time in Milwaukee a couple weeks ago. Had a blast. Small venue, $20, played for 3.5+. Crazy fun setlist.

I. Hell in a Bucket, You See a Broken Heart , Black throated wind, On the road again, Hard to handle, Althea, Biodtl, Good morning little school girl , Birdsong, Music never stopped, Ain’t no bread in the breadbox, Music never stopped

II. Cats down under the stars, Playing in tbe band, Saint of Circumstance, Crazy fingers, Throwing stones, Drums, Space, Playing reprise, Morning Dew, Maggies farm, Around and Around, Easy Wind, Cream Puff War

One more Saturday Night

I mean, I've seen over 200 Dead shows, had hundreds of tapes, and was embarassed I didn't even know what the second tune was, "You See A Broken Heart" , lol. Had to look it up. Guess the Dead only played it once live in '66. Now that's a fun bust out. Some choice JGB covers. Honestly thought they were better than the last JRAD show I saw for less $ and a cooler scene. I'd see them anytime they come to the Chicago/Wisco area. Fun band.

This past weekend they played some less known covers and deep cuts. I have the same sentiments with respect to JRAD.

Well that’s a bummer. Going to this show in LA next month. Heard nothing but great reviews on Post so hope it was just a bad night by the sound crew. Sorry it was your show.

Honestly, Ford Field seems to be hit or miss acoustically.

However, Sunday was the first time we experienced one act sounding great (Jelly Roll) and one that did not (Malone).
I 100% think it was the sound setup because Jelly Roll didn't sound nearly as good when he came out for Losers.
It seems like they upped the band volume for Post and his vocals just couldn't overcome it.

I think this might be the year... I have friends that already have a camping site (and are bringing their RV trailer) and said I could stay with them, and I would just need to buy my own show tickets for DMB at the Gorge. I've never been, and it's a bucket list item, so I need to get it done before they retire.

Anyone ever been to the Gorge to see DMB or any other artist(s)/festival?

@Evilgrin 72 had a good Gorge story here

Thanks, but that's a different Gorge. Maybe the same river (Columbia), but DMB's annual 3-day event is held in George, WA (approx midpoint between Seattle and Spokane).

I still don't get it. I even tried to go in totally open-minded recently on his Coachella performance (watched on livestream). One of my most respected and favorite posters in bigbottom (I think it was him) gave a recent, glowing review, so I was ready to welcome the kids back on my lawn. But no, sorry, get off.

He was awful and I still can't believe the level to which he has risen (although I'm convinced a lot of it was very good marketing, being smart, and as always can be the case, timing).

I will say, and bigbottom alluded to this, he does come off as a very genuine, sincere, appreciative and likable guy. And it's nice to see that go far. That part's appealing for sure, but it's not why I love or want to see music. I mean, I love when that comes with it, sure, or just enjoy and get into it even more when you know they are good people and coming from the heart. But I can't even get to that part, or started with this guy. The music has to be first and his isn't there, for me anyway.

To somewhat continue my mini rant, because I can't stop noticing it out there (Post Malone jumped on the train), but . . . country music.

Good lord, it's like every label has had their meetings with the artists and ingrained into them how much money is pouring in from that demographic. We've even got Beyonce riding horses in LA these days. Happened to catch a newscast with shots of concert-goers pre-show, some being interviewed. I thought it was Halloween.

We skipped Railbird Festival this year because it went away from alt-country/Americana/rock and turned almost entirely pop country this year.

I think Post Malone has a lot of talent. But I'm not sure he was ready for a stadium tour. He isn't Swift, Beyonce or Metalica.

Gonna absorb a 'Jason Newsted and Friends' benefit show...at Syracuse's Everson Museum (superb little auditorium...250-ish seats available)...in mid-July. He's a central NY 'local' during the summer months...as he owns a ginormous lakeside shanty in Skaneateles (a few miles SW of 'Cuse). The accompanying exhibition (Tyler Smith's "BOMBOTZ")...looks cool. Kinda sorta has a "Big Daddy" Roth/Rat Fink...with a mechanized flair...vibe to it. Should be a quality evening.

Mrs. Smails and I like many genres of music. Rock, Blues, Country and a lot more. Good music is good music. Like Teddy Swims - wouldn't even know how to classify him but he reminds me more of Stapleton with his voice than anyone else. One of our favorite weekends is early December in Vegas when the National Finals Rodeo is in town. There's always a ton of concerts going on. Obviously country, but others as well. Can package residencies (wonder if Kenny Chesney will be at the Sphere that weekend - makes sense) with other concerts plus the country artists that come in for that weekend (actually 2 weeks). As an example, one year we saw Bruno Mars one night at TMobile and Chris Stapleton the next night at MGM. Book a few great dinners, watch football in the sports book or go to the Raiders game in town and voila - you have a phenomenal weekend. Just booked Cody Johnson with the presale yesterday for that first Friday night. Great seats lower level for $100. I'll take that all day long. He's on my list as an artist I wanted to see.

Seeing Peter Hook and the Light 6/11. Not thrilled with him performing New Order’s Get Ready album (not a favorite of mine), but looking forward to the vast cache of Joy Division songs he’ll be performing.

Saw JRAD at the Stone Pony on Friday night. They can really play technically but they miss the "soul" of the Dead. Still a fun experience overall to see the younger kids (among an older crowd) value the Dead experience.

My wife and I were at a party and she was sharing what a great experience she had at the Jason Isbell concert we attended. She wasn't familiar with his music going in, but loved the concert.

Someone asked her if he was one of those great new pop country artists that are "so fantastic!". The glare I gave the woman that said that....if looks could kill....
