Concerts thread - FBG's lovin' live music, we're back in action! (4 Viewers)

Saw Brandi Carlile at Forest Hills Stadium (Queens) tonight

First concert since lockdown for me and about 10,000 other New Yorkers

She did not disappoint

:headbang:
Admittedly, I wasn’t familiar with her until I saw Dave Grohl’s From Cradle to Stage episode with her and her mom. She is very talented and I am now a fan. I would love see her live, but her tour doesn’t come near Tampa.

Yeah I’m not the biggest fan but I definitely like her musical style. Sort of post-Lilith Fair americana singer-songwriter. Thank mash up of Liz Phair & Joni Mitchell. Here’s her signature hit from back in the day:

The Story

Really I just wanted to have an opportunity to be outdoors, at an event, enjoying the atmosphere. Felt good to be alive.

(also, the side floor suite w/ service did not suck)

This is cool, showed up in my feed this morning:

Rolling Stone review of BC concert @ Forest Hills Stadium

(includes 3-4 videos of songs performed by Brandi, including “Rocketman” - she also performed it for a Elton John tribute concert last year - and The Twins encore “The Sounds of Silence”)

Saw Guns N’ Roses last night in Hershey…first show of their tour.

First time seeing them.  Something was off with the vocals.  Not sure if it was the mix or if Axl’s voice is just shot after all these years.  Slash was amazing.

Nice to have live concerts again.

King Crimson w/ The Zappa Band coming up in September and will be my first show post-covid. Followed closely by Primus (performing Rush's "A Farewell to Kings" album). Also got tickets for Samantha Fish and Christone "Kingfish" Ingram (separate shows) in November.

Welcome back, live music!

Tonight I'm going to my first live show since November, 2019---Wilco and Sleater-Kinney.

I'm in Utah so will likely be one of the few people in the venue wearing a mask but I'm not missing this one.

I also have tickets to see Neko Case, Spoon and Nation of Language in the next several weeks.

And I just bought a ticket for the Cruel World Fest in Los Angeles in May.

Really counting on my Pfizer vax  :oldunsure:

I have been to two concerts in the past week or so.  One each in Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Both were outdoors with crowds >20k.  Masks were a rarity at both.

Your mileage may vary.

Jimmy Buffet at Jones Beach tomorrow - really looking forward to it.

Miss concerts - I'd go see anything right now. Even Stryper opening up for Cyndi Lauper.

Saw her for my first concert at the Spectrum in Philly back in the late 80s. Eddie Money opened. She had these huge sliding boards on each side of the stage.

A couple festivals in my near future, Railbird Fest in Lexington and Sea-Hear-Now in NJ, both announced this week vaccination or negative test required.  Hope more follow suit.  Went to Phish in Deer Creek this past weekend and pretty sure I caught 7 strands of Covid.

from food? cheese curds have at least 4 strains

It’s over again. Los Angeles and Las Vegas requiring masks indoors due to the unvaxxed idiots. Man I despise ignorant people. Have 2 shows in next few weeks and now don’t even want to go
Yeah, I don't think any of the fall shows are going to happen this year. The Netherlands just had a supposed "COVID safe" music festival that turned into a superspreader event. I think some venues in the US could maybe manage to have safe shows, but have a feeling some of our early festivals like Lollapalooza won't end well and will put an end to most of the other tours and festivals. Having Lollapalooza this year seems like one of the dumber ideas. I get that it's outside, but that event is always butts to nuts packed with people from all over the country and world.

So, completely non-political comment here - just noting that many of our local venues have decided to go with proof of vaccination or a 72 hour Covid test result, while dropping the masks. Our largest summer music festival (SummerFest in Milwaukee) - with typical attendance of around 800,000-900,000, announced this policy for all admissions today. I attended a large show on Sunday (Black Crowes) with no restrictions, and that same venue will have this policy in place for a BoDeans show this Friday.  One of the largest local live show ownership groups (owns two large venues, a few smaller venues) is also going with proof of vax or test results and no masks.  Just announced for Umphrey's McGee this Friday and several other shows this fall / winter.  Jason Isbell (December) is also doing this, but I think that comes from him not necessarily from the venue.

Wook flu is stronger than any strand of covid.

Nice! How were the Black Crowes? Seeing them next week

They put on a great show, as expected. Chris Robinson's voice is still strong and he's a great front man. They do the Shake your Money Maker record in order, then a few other hits and some surprises from the past, then closed with Rock N Roll by Lou Reed.

Starting to look like a good fall:

Ohana Festival September 26 (Pearl Jam headlining)

My Morning Jacket October 1

Dr. Dog November 1

Deer Tick November 5

Went to the Spirit of the South tour tonight in JAX.  Went with my adult son. He wanted to see Wild Feathers.  I wanted to see AllmanBetts. Blackberry Smoke was gravy to us. His band was solid. AllmanBetts took tbe stage and without a word launched into a 14 minute version of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. They were outstanding.

Then there was a pause before Blackberry Smoke. A looong pause.  I mean a  what is going on pause.  Then they announce that Blackberry Smoke will not go on stage.

Turns out the lead singer was symptomatic and tested positive.

Weird ending to an otherwise fun Tuesday night and I hope everyone is okay.

Nice - did Dirty Honey open? Looking forward to them too

That sucks.  Love Blackberry Smoke....

Just finished putting up some concert tickets for sale for two shows I'm no longer attending.  While checking what they'd fetch in the aftermarket, I noticed some interesting things.

Both had a ton of "new" seats available.  Where did they come from?  I'm not talking drops from mgmt and whatnot or a small patch or two of rows.  Like half of entire sections and more.  Upper sections but still, those weren't available the day of.

One is The Black Crowes at the Forum in LA next week.  The other's The Outlaw Festival with Willie Nelson and some other solid acts.  During both ticket onsales, it was fairly slim pickings.  There wasn't nearly as much availability.  Now both shows have a ton of seats, with aftermarket prices predictably crashing.

These aren't resell tickets either, TM designates as such.  In fact when I tried to sell mine through TM resale (lazy), it will not allow me to enter a lower price than what they are currently selling for that section.  I can only go one penny higher, literally, than their base ticket cost in that area.  That's another story I guess, bastards indeed.

What I would like to know, is how or why do they hold so many tickets back on the initial onsale?  To create demand, sure, but with that many?  People were going crazy for concerts when these onsales took place, with a bright light at the end of the tunnel (then) and so I guess I'm just surprised these acts weren't more popular.  And/or that TM manipulates the market to that degree.

What gives?

Dirty Honey was disappointing. They have the right look and they fit the mold of a hard-rockin band to a T.  Their sound mix was way off, which was probably the main problem.  I think they could learn alot from the main act on this tour.

Whoa. Didn't realize they were still around, let alone touring.

They have a new album out. They cancelled their tour last year like everyone else. I've never had a chance to see them any other time and have regretted it. My sister has seen them multiple times and tells me they are excellent live. Looking forward to it (assuming it happens)

Could be ticket holders have the right to get refunds if dates are switched

Now doubtful for Black Crowes tomorrow night. Have no motivation to be in a big arena and having to wear masks the entire time.
I did it the other night because Florida (not mandatory yet). It wasn’t that bad. I did only stay for the 2 opening acts (went to see Garbage) though and it was hot af (outdoor show)

You left before Alanis? Awesome. 🤣

Saw Chicago last month at the Amp in Tampa...didn't bother with masks once we were in our seats, nobody really did.  But that was early July.

Seeing Black Crowes in West Palm in 2 weeks...no clue what their policy is, but Im sure it will be a little more mask-y.

I like to think of it as easily getting out of the parking lot with Alanis’ help. You still going to Hall and Oates on 9/20?

We saw David J (from Bauhaus/Love and Rockets) play  in some SF hippie guy's backyard last night. There must have been about 50 people there (GA ticketed, all seated, vax mandatory, masks optional) with rows of folding chairs arranged around a willow tree in the yard.  David played an acoustic set with a bass player and backup singer sitting in for about half of the time.

Outdoor venues are pretty scarce in the city so this was a unique way of putting on a show.  I don't know how legal it was but the concert had a very cool intimate vibe about it.

I’m going to see this show on Sunday. It was originally schedule for a few days past the JAX show (8/13) and was postponed.

I saw Molly Tuttle Sunday night at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. We got a table for the show almost two years ago, and it was the first show for me that was cancelled due to Covid.  We went to a show at Space north of the City in early March 2020, then the #### hit the fan a couple days later. This was the first show at OTSFM in 17 months - proof of vax and masks required.  I had a great night with some good friends. Its one of my favorite venues.

Heading to Lexington this weekend.  Any lesser known names at this festival you highly recommend?  I've highlighted my current viewing plans.

Saturday

Sunday
Jason Isbell likely to be the highlight of the entire festival. Seriously consider dipping in.

Also DMB sounding rough right now per buddy who just saw them. His "first bad Dave show". Just a heads up, YMMV

I love Colter Wall. Would also recommend Black Pumas and Margo Price but I’ve not seen either of those two live. Goin to see Black Pumas next month.
Was going to suggest Margo Price, Black Pumas. Southern Avenue and Cedric Burnside are local favorites.

I like Isbell, but no way am I missing Band of Horses.  Isbell is coming to Cincy for 2 nights in December, will catch him then.

Not a big DMB fan so not concerned.

Did Railbird Festival in Lexington this weekend.

Saturday was a complete #### show.  With temps over 90, the lines for the few water filling stations were super long, and the lines for all vending was ridiculous.  Saw people passing out in line waiting for food/water.  I felt like I spent half the day in line.

Saturday's highlights: My Morning Jacket, Bendigo Fletcher, Briston Maroney, BIlly Strings (only saw partial because I had to get to MMJ stage)

We're pushing 50, and Saturday's weather and lack of water was tough on my wife.  We decided to take it easy on Sunday and wait to go over later.  Well we didn't account for the number of people who had the same idea and it took a while for an Uber and to get through the gates, so we missed The Revivalists.  We got to see Band of Horses and Pinegrove and decided not to wait for DMB.  We caught some of Khruangbin on the way out.

The festival made up for things on Sunday, they had a number of free water bottle stations, and the lines were shorter, but I think that was due to so many people not coming on Sunday.  They got absolutely murdered on social media for their preparation on Saturday.

I am heading up for Sea Hear Now. I am likely skipping Sunday though.
