Consensus Top 300 Albums of All-Time: Taking lists of your 70 favorite albums (4 Viewers)

Im going to treat it like the movie countdowns- what 60 albums would i grab first, desert island style.
I'm leaning toward which were most meaningful me when they came out. They'll be more than a few that won't appear on anyone's lists.

This is going to make the Top 300 Books of All Time thread look like a Bokanovskian cohort of Epsilon minus sanitation engineers.

I'm probably going to have to go with one album per artist
I’m mulling that over right now. It’s really really tough to narrow down one album from some of these artists though. On the other hand, I don’t want 4 or 5 artists to represent a third of my list.

One thing quickly became clear: I don't really listen to albums anymore
Same here.
For both of you: why is that?
1) I know longer purchase music in a physical format, so I don't feel "obligated" to listen to an entire disc
2) There's so much music coming at me on a day-to-day basis it's enough to try and keep up with the singles
3) Many of those songs coming at me are released as singles, often way in advance of the album
4) By the time the album for a song I like comes out, I've already got more music to listen to in front of it

I'll still put albums on, but it's a lot less frequent and very few stand out to me.

All fair reasons but you're still wrong because albums rule

OK, I did a quick 60 bouncing back and forth between my annual playlists. One thing quickly became clear: I don't really listen to albums anymore and haven't (much) since 2011 when Spotify was available here. That said
  • Oldest album on the list - 1963
  • Newest album on the list - 2013 (although this will be the first tossed overboard if I think of something else; 2009 is a pretty safe best as what I'll submit as newest)
  • 1960s - 5
  • 1970s - 16
  • 1980s - 17
  • 1990s - 7
  • 2000s - 14
  • 2010s - 1 (hanging on by a thread)
I was pretty much checked out in the 90s. I'm surprised I have 7 from that decade.

I'm sure I'll revisit this a couple thousand times between now and Bastille Day.
I listen to albums all the way through a lot more now w/ streaming than I ever did before. Probably 1/4 of my list will be new finds I discovered through streaming

It’s quite likely I will have 60 entries that no one else lists.

Strictly 60? Can people submit more or less?
less is fine - more seems pointless and too much extra work for no gain. I'd prefer a cap at 60 but people can submit less.

There's some small part of me - OK, maybe a medium-sized part of me - that isn't getting over the fact that we submitted 70 in TV shows and books but only 60 here. I don't know what the hell is the matter with me.

I can make it 70 I guess if people really want the consistency.

It will be interesting to see if anything dominates this list like Breaking Bad/Seinfeld/Sopranos did the TV list. I'm guessing maybe not since there's probably a lot of overlap on artists but maybe not on which album(s) of theirs belong in your top 70.

Is KP going to listen to all 300 albums that appear on this countdown? I'm guessing that he will.

ANNOUNCEMENT

For the sake of consistency with past threads, I am upping the submission list to 70 albums.
I’m sorry to be that guy but if there is any way the deadline could be pushed to just after the 4th of July weekend (July 7) that would be very much appreciated by me.

If not, I’ll still get my list in. Thanks.

I think there will be less consensus here. There’s a lot more albums out there than TV shows.

I’ll leave it as is for now but we can end up extending if it looks like people will need it. It’s still over a month away.

Based on how the other threads have gone, how likely is it that someone’s top few albums would make the final 300 even if nobody else picks them?

Unlikely. As others have said, TV is much less diverse, fewer options than music and even with that, unique shows in anyone’s top 5 were honorably mentioned. And it looks like this will get as many

I made it a point to highlight these and it sounds like Dr Octopus is doing the same.

I don’t know what the IMDb of music is, but I highly suggest we use a source for naming conventions so he doesn’t end up with duplicates like

The Beastie Boys
Beastie boys
The Beesty Boyz

Etc.

By far the biggest headache of doing these.

Any of those decent?

you could also just link youtube but then the only issue with that is some of them will be mislabeled or misspelled

 I will I admit that I did have this thought today. Then I started thinking about all the Bob Dylan, Beatles, and other crap I would have to endure and I am not sure I'd make it. ;)
