Consensus Top 350 Albums of All-Time: 68. Automatic for the People – R.E.M. (234 Viewers)

People calling the Beatles overrated and we've had three albums by Tool.
4 and I’ll be shocked if we don’t get a 5th. Unfortunately I don’t think the EP will make it

I mean you’ve got a singer and a drummer who are 2 of the best of all time at their craft (certainly on the Prog rock / metal genre) and then great bass and guitar players

Only 5 albums and an EP in 33 years should tell you they’re not just pumping out crap and take their time to make sure their albums are beer perfect

Anyway I’m starting to sound like Douchey Tool Fan so I’ll just shut up now
With you, MAC and KP all loading up with high rankings, I'm sure we probably will see a 5th.
These voting blocs are giving some really unreliable results (you know who you are)

Unreliable? This is a consensus ranking of (a small sample size) people's top/favorite albums - and we are accomplishing that. I'm actually enjoying it not being a cookie cutter countdown.

I also think the voting blocks have been interesting to see developing - not that I think anyone did anything nefarious or underhanded like JML claimed he was considering doing - in other words I think a majority of the voting blocks are coincidental and just similar tastes.

There's one that looks a little "pre-planned" but that could also just be coincidental/similar taste situation and even if not, its not a huge deal. This is for fun and discussion about albums we love.

Unreliable as in...skewed? I mean, we've already discussed that we are going to have a lot more rock than rap or country. We are (largely) a bunch of middle-upper-middle aged men ranking albums. I doubt ANY top 300 from a larger sample size would have 5 Tool albums.

It isn't a criticism of you or the process. Still having a great time.

But I did find the irony of someone complaining The freaking Beatles were overrated as we introduced the 4th Tool album to the countdown very rich.

And no...I don't think anyone is doing anything "nefarious"

Not even sure what "nefarious" would look like in an exercise like this with literally nothing at stake.

I think we could see 5, but I only voted for last night's. I am weird- i would say Tool is a favorite band, but i rarely listen to their albums because I tend to skip a lot of the weird filler tracks. 10,000 Days is the only one i listen to consistently anymore.

Looked at my rankings 100% we will see another one
I forget what is left, but i whiffed on one other. I had Lateralus in the car a lot and should have found points for that.

From the perspective of someone that was born more than a decade after their last album release, I don't understand the appeal of pre-66 Beatles, but 66-70 Beatles are one of the greatest bands I've ever heard. And Tool may be the best band since Led Zepellin began their fade. I didn't vote for Undertow though. Good, not great. I was surprised Fear made it, expected the 3 in the middle, and those unfamiliar with them should give them a spin or 4.

Definitely curious to see who I have the most matches with at the end, will give me some good confidence that their other picks are good albums

Does doc have stats on who matched the most with who?

Not even sure what "nefarious" would look like in an exercise like this with literally nothing at stake.

I was just referring to JML who said he considered finding another poster or two to "cook the books" with and try to get some of his albums on the list (after people made some jokes about the Rannous Block).

Obviously that doesn't really raise to the level of "nefarious" but the comment made me a little disappointed since as you said "there's nothing at stake", it's all for fun.

And yes - no other list would have 5 Tool albums on it - maybe one would appear but that's ok with me in this context.

John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band is the debut solo studio album by English musician John Lennon. Backed by the Plastic Ono Band (consisting of Lennon on guitar, Ringo Starr on drums, and Klaus Voormann on bass), it was released by Apple Records on 11 December 1970 in tandem with the similarly titled album by his wife, Yoko Ono. At the time of its issue, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band received mixed reviews overall, but later came to be widely regarded as one of Lennon's best solo albums.
Mistakes were made. I submitted "John Lennon & The Plastic Ono Band - John Lennon - 52" as my 19th ranked album.

I wouldn't either, its not that important.

From the perspective of someone that was born more than a decade after their last album release, I don't understand the appeal of pre-66 Beatles, but 66-70 Beatles are one of the greatest bands I've ever heard. I was also born in that range and I love the pre-66 Beatles stuff. Especially Help and Rubber Soul. Beautiful straight forward song writing, excellent harmonies, easy to sing a lot to hooks and especially in the 2 albums I mentioned, the start of their experimentation. My favorite Beatles period is that middle run of Help to Sgt Pepper

It's been a while, but from memory for me Help! began the transition, Rubber Soul sustained it, then it all connected with Revolver. What you described isn't generally what I seek out in music though. They have their place, especially the hits, but not much beyond that. And this is an album draft.

Little Earthquakes is the debut solo album by the American singer-songwriter Tori Amos, featuring the singles "Silent All These Years", "China", "Winter" and "Crucify". After Atlantic Records rejected the first version of the album, Amos began working on a second version with her then-boyfriend Eric Rosse. The album was first released in the UK on January 6, 1992, where it peaked at number 14 in the charts.

It was well received by critics and listeners. In the US, the album reached the top 60 of the Billboard 200. It is frequently regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time; it was voted number 73 in Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums and ranked number 233 on Rolling Stone's 500 greatest albums of all time.

To me all of those albums and Hard Days Night are pretty much perfect start to finish. No skips.

Glad to see this one make it, I didn’t really get into them until college. I remember seeing something about them on MTV before that, the guy playing 2 saxophones or whatever. When Sandman passed one of my college professors mentioned them and I ended up buying this CD and it got a ton of play back then. I still break it out fairly frequently

hard to pick a favorite but I’ll go with the title track Cure for Pain

I also really like I’m Free Now, Candy, Thursday but there really isn’t a bad song on this album

I would think @Ilov80s or any other jazz fans would certainly dig this.
I saw Morphine at South Street Seaport a month before Sandman died. Another huge musical talent cut short. I’m actually surprised it made the list though as it seems a lot of people don’t know them. But I still listen to this album frequently. (There’s that saxophone again.)

Hey all, what are your preferences for the playlist? I'll defer to majority rule here. I'm kind of partial to a couple of the lesser knowns here, namely, I Found Out & Remember; the former I tend to put on loop, and the other for the way it sounds like a follow-on to A Day in the Life.

Up to you; no wrong answers.

My rankings in my post-Beatles Beatles countdown:

unranked - My Mummy's Dead
#197 - Remember
#196 - Look at Me
#178 - Well Well Well
#137 - Hold On
#118 - Love
#65 - Working Class Hero
#47 - I Found Out
#30 - Mother
#23 - Isolation
#18 - God

This is a tough one for me. One of those albums that I think the whole is better than any single song, and I could pick any of 5 or 6 songs depending on the day. Of those two, probably I Found Out. Isolation, Mother, Working Class Hero, God some of my other favorites from it.

I'll bet the Morphine outro on a Sorpranos episode introduced many of us to the band, as it did me.

I like Tori, not sure I’ve ever listened to a full album though

Took the wife to see her in concert a few years ago.

She’s really talented but gets a little too high pitched for me at times so I like her better in small doses

Band on the Run is the third studio album by the British–American rock band Paul McCartney and Wings, released on 30 November 1973. It was McCartney's fifth album after leaving the Beatles in April 1970 and his final album on Apple Records. Although sales were modest initially, its commercial performance was aided by two hit singles – "Jet" and "Band on the Run" – such that it became the top-selling studio album of 1974 in the United Kingdom and Australia, in addition to revitalising McCartney's critical standing. It remains McCartney's most successful album and the most celebrated of his post-Beatles works.

Aqualung is the fourth studio album by the English rock band Jethro Tull; it was released in March 1971 by Chrysalis Records. Though it is generally regarded as a concept album, featuring a central theme of "the distinction between religion and God", the band said that there was no intention to make a concept album, and that only a few songs have a unifying theme. Aqualung's success signaled a turning point in the career of the band, which went on to become a major radio and touring act.

Already over saturated with Beatles albums now we have a bunch of side projects?

What’s next…Timberlake and the Knight Brothers getting albums on the list?

"Love Take Me Down (To the Streets)" is such a good Wings song.
Makes me think of the awesome movie Role Models.
May or may not be where I stole the joke from...
