Costco Love <3 (1 Viewer)

We've been forced to shop at Sam's since the closest Costco is aboot two hours away from us. It's like shopping in a 3rd world country compared to Costco.
You should have considered this before the move! I joke, but as we look at our possible retirement locations we have talked about “Is there a Costco or Wegmans nearby?”

I've no need for samples or any of that bs, but the hooch section always sucks me in.

I'm a beer drinker almost exclusively and Costco beer prices are garbage. Trader Joe's and Rite-aid have far better pricing on beer than Costco. Hell, TJs wine prices are better too for this Rosé enthusiast.

They only sell cases at ours now and the prices are good but I have no interest in a case of beer. They don't even sell the Kirkland (Deschutes) Vintage Ale that everyone supposedly is raving about. I'd buy it if I could, but no.

I can get the same beers Costco sells for less elsewhere. Seems like a no brainer to me.

yeah but that sweet booze is a helluva deal

No booze in Oregon. Have to visit a liquor store.

best beer deal is the Costco "Vintage Ale" which some people said is Deschutes Abyss, if you liked that beer.

have had a couple now and can confirm it's a mighty fine beverage

I know this is the <3 Costco thread but they really need to add the ability to scan items and checkout via their app like Scan & Go at Sam's Club. I despise waiting in line and Scan & Go combined with their new AI Checkout means I don't even need to show my receipt at the door half the time now either.
My Costco has self check out. It’s glorious. What’s this scan and go magic you speak of?

Hmm, I'll have to check that out...hard to believe. Abyss is some mighty tasty stuff, if you like a bourbon barrel-aged stouts.

Scan the items with your phone as you put them in your cart. Click pay on your phone when your done and walk out the door.

Not much to do today so I think I'll go to Costco and wander around aimlessly and block some aisles while trying out bite sized pieces of food samples. Hopefully they have that Detroit deep dish pizza...love that one.
We have been buying those recently. They are probably the best frozen pizzas you can buy.
Nice having on a crappy evening when you don't have another option and you don't want to leave.
Or when the kids get hungry.

And what's keeping folks from stealing? Or "forgetting" to scan an item or 3?

I hope somebody with a life that needs to be somewhere else flattens you as they round a corner and you're busy tipping your head back to get that last yogurt covered dingleberry out of the tiny paper thimble.

looking at the box right now

stamped with the Deschutes Brewery emblem and reads:

Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout

Vintage Ale

Smooth * Bold * Complex

Aged for nine months in bourbon barrels, this robust imperial stout was meticulously crafted by Deschutes Brewery in Bend, Oregon, with notes of dark chocolate and roasted coffee.

Brewed and Bottled at Deschutes Brewery, Bend, OR

now, that doesn't mean it is the Abyss recipe.. but that's the rumor. and all i know is it tastes pretty, pretty, pretty good.

AI is watching, also there's employees at the exit checking carts and receipts. With the Scan-n-go the employee gets an alert from AI on whether to check your cart or not.

70" TV? how did I forget to scan that?

I used to enjoy their Polish dog, but that's about it. Haven't had one in 10 years or more. Costco to me is a surgical strike. Park on the outskirts, bolt down the far aisle where electronics and office furniture are, dive into the back for TP, paper towels, zip in for coffee, olive oil and mixed nuts, then race to self check-out. Get in, get out, go to the bar. I see people waiting in line for pizza or whatever and just think 'why would you want to stay here longer than you need to'? Do you linger around the dentist office after your appointment is over, reading magazines just because you're there? So weird.
I love taking my time. Life is short. Plus you might run across something you like or need.

Yeah, yeah, yeah platitudes aside, there's a lot of life to be lived outside of a giant warehouse store. I see folks like you lapping up free samples and milling around like a dope and just can't understand that mentality. You lick up a Dixie cup of pudding and find joy in this? Not me, man. Would you linger around a 7-11 longer than you have to? Do you get gas and then just waltz around the convenience store because it's there? Just weird, man.
lol, that is not me.

I am still a guy. I have a plan upon entering. However, unlike most other stores, you never know when something new pops up at Costco.
I feel it's worth the extra time to hit the main aisles.

My tolerance for people just milling around when others are trying to conduct commerce and be on their way is very low. I'm not a 'browser'. I'm not looking to spend money on things that aren't 'essentials'. Costco makes sense for a family our size but I'm not bringing my entire family in there with me because I don't view Costco as some sort of treat. It's not an amusement park. The human cholesterol clogging up the aisles waiting for free samples or just leaving their carts perpendicular in the middle of the aisle is maddening.

But you can't beat it for coffee, olive oil, etc. Big fan of their giant sized spices and vanilla too. Want some edamame? Here's 50 bags for 10 dollars. Want some rolled oats? How's a bag the size of a Nissan Leaf strike you?
Maybe don't go at noon on Saturday. I have gone several times right before close. Nobody there.
I find closing time varies. Sometimes its a ghost town and other times I begin to question if they've extended the closing time for that night. My new go to is right at opening on the weekend. Its fairly crowded throughout the store, but the checkout is absolutely empty b/c everyone moves so slow. Even if I'm taking my time, you're still one of the 1st people to the front. It really is incredible how slow we move as a society. People shop like they're making life changing decisions.

This. Also, the store has had the same layout for at least the past decade and the variety isn't plentiful enough to be wasting time mulling over your options. These are the same people who struggle with menu options at McDonalds. A number 7 large please, is it that hard???!!!???!!

We get like 10 things from costco....

Eggs
Milk
OJ
Detergent and Downy
Meat/Poulty
Irish cheese and butter
Oldest likes Bagel bites
Coffee
Produce
Collagen

Takes all of 10 minutes to grab those items.
100% with you. We have our set staples we get and then once a season my wife will go through the clothes section to find deals on clothes for our kid since he seems to outgrow all of his clothes once a week.

Our regular list is:
Eggs
Meat
Shrimp
Dog food
Seltzer
Frozen egg fritatas
Snack packs of trail mix
Allergy meds

Occasionally:
Rotisserie chicken if we're there at a time they have them and don't already have dinner planned
Golf balls
Dog beds
Jameson
Kind of surprised by these lists. There’s so many non-food things we get. Tide Pods, tons of toiletries, paper goods, garbage bars and kitchen items. I will probably be shopping much less frequently once’s the last boy is in college next Fall but when we were a house of 4 or 5, we’d run the dishwasher and clothes washer every day. The trash would get taken out every night and TP/paper towels would be gone quick. All of that stuff was way cheaper at Costco, especially if you pay attention to coupons since some things like Ziplocks or Sonicare brunch heads would alternate every other month.
I 100% forgot TP and paper towels. That's not an every visit thing but it's the only place we buy them from.

That's usually my Costco bat signal to go. When we pull the last TP/Paper Towel out of the garage, that's my cue (queue?).

TP
Paper Towels
San Francisco French Roast coffee beans
Olive oil
Edamame
Kambucha
Black olives
Black beans

*occasional items

Berries
Sandwich bread rustic white
Variety pack Zip Lock
Vanilla
Vegan Bitchin Sauce
Montreal Steak Seasoning
Cumin
Black pepper
Mixed nuts
Oranges navel when in season

Costco dog food is great too. $36 for 40 pounds compared to $75 or more at pet store.
Made by Diamond brands and is highly recommended and rated.

We used to buy the lamb and rice bag, but I think my dog picked up some allergies along the way, so we're trying different things out on him. He was SUPPOSED to be a low-maintenance rescue mutt from the streets of New Mexico, but he's turned into a high-maintenance member of the bourgeoisie apparently.

Still the best boy who's ever been a boy!
