Could Wes Welker be a top 5 wr in 2007 (1 Viewer)

I don't think people fully appreciate what a great season Wes Welker is having thus far.

Randy Moss is deservedly getting all the hype (Moss is the #1 wr in fantasy football) in New England, but Wes Welker is quietly putting up some spectacular + consistent numbers.

Welker is on pace to put up 1,226 yards 12 td's and 112 receptions.

If those numbers play out Welker will be a top 5 (or very close to it) wr in 2007.

Will Welker keep up these great numbers in the dominant New England offense? What were the Dolphins thinking when they let this guy go?

I'm not sure if he'll project out what he's done the last few weeks, especially after watson gets back, but he'll have a great year.

he didn't have the same value in miami as he has in new england, though.

the fact is, when they were building this receiving corps over the winter everybody was talking about moss, but it's welker that would've beaten indy last year and won us another superbowl.

that's really all we needed to add this year --- adalius, stallworth, and moss are all just gravy.

I drafted him because I thought he would be a great player. I owned him when he was a Dolphin so I recognize how undervalued he always is (our league gives points for kick/punt return yardage).

So what did I do? Traded him after week 2 for Chris Chambers. :scared:

I can see him averaging 5 rec, 60 yds and 0.5 TD/game the rest of the way. Which would give him 96 grabs, 1100 yds and 10 TDs. No way he keeps up the pace of the last few games, but that's more than enough to make me happy.

I treid to trade for this guy to add him to my stable of Moss and Stallworth but his owner wouldn't bite. I think he will keep up his pace and outperform Stallworth and have more receptions than Moss. However Moss will still outperform him in TDs and yards but Welker is a fantasy stud this year.

He might be more of a draft steal than Moss. But no matter what, getting WR1 production out of a guy that most drafted as a WR3 or 4 is awesome. I had the feeling for him and grabbed him in all my leagues.

Unfortunately he was one of my few draft day victories...

Yes. Wes is one of those special players who just gets open and plays smart. All dolphin fans knew this and were sorry to see him leave. Still, he wasn't going to make the difference on this Miami team, so getting a second and a Seventh for him was worth it (the 2nd was for our starting center, the seventh is for our new punter, I think), since Wes wasn't going to make us a playoff contender all on his lonesome. Some here in Miami say we should have used a first round tender number on him (as opposed to the second), but I am not sure if BB bites at that number or we could have still traded him at that point. All dolphin fans wish Wes well. Yeah, he's a patriot now so we hate him a little, but I knew he would flourish in New England (yet somehow failed to draft him in any league).I went on record saying wes would be the best WR in New England this year (FF Point wise), and I am not completely wrong on this point (we'll see how moss continues to do)

I think he'll continue to be excellent for the entire year but the Watson injury was key to the explosion of the past few weeks. I'd sell high on him before Watson comes back since his value in leagues is probably stratospheric right now. (I won't be doing that because 2 of my first 3 WRs are injured - now Welker who I drafted as a 5th WR is carrying me to the playoffs  ).

29 grabs 351yds and 5 TDs last 3 games. My best waiver claim as I'm sure he is others too. Helping me get out of my 2-4 start.

I know Watson was a big part of the Brady machine for the first 4 or 5 games but Welker was still productive. I think he had 2 bad games. I think Wes will have more of the games like yesterday from here on out which is fine by me.

From foxsports: Wes Welker led the Patriots with nine catches for 87 yards and a score. He's totaled 29 catches, 347 yards and five touchdowns in the past three games. Comparatively, he had totaled considerably less in his first five games with 27 catches, 262 yards and just one touchdown.

Welker is going to continue this pace imo. Playing the slot he is almost always getting the other teams #3 corner back and they just cant cover him.

Of course he can be a top 5 WR this year.

Can he keep it up next year? Will he be a top 5 WR in fantasy drafts? Not likely.

See Stokley, Brandon.

Stokley never had the physical tools that Wes Welker does. The only comparison between them is that both are white.

"run out 9 yards, turn around, and i'll throw you the ball. then turn and dive forward for the first down. rinse and repeat."

I was thinking of making a play for Welker. I was a little surprised to see his top 250 forward ranking in the mid 20's (behind guy like Lee Evans and Kevin Curtis). Right now, Welker ranks 5th for WR's in my PPR league. He's also 6th in targets for all players.

The Pats offense shows no signs of slowing down. Why the lack of love from Dodds?

Is the Watson injury that big of a deal. I know Welker's numbers have exploded since Watson went down but are the 2 directly related? Watson got 2, 6, 2, 2, 7, 1 targets in the 6 games that he played.

I think he continues to product top 10 WR numbers, especially in PPR leagues.

Any other opinions?

Anybody think its time to sell high? I've received some trade offers (including straight up for Fitzgerald), but I just can't seem to pull the trigger. However, if you look at this breakdown, Watson's presence seems to have a significant impact on Welker's production.

Weeks 1-5 w/ Watson...Welker had 36 targets (7.2 / gm), 27 receptions (5.4 / gm), 262 yds (52.4 / gm), 1 TD

Weeks 6-8 w/o Watson...Welker had 36 targets (12 / gm), 29 receptions (9.7 / gm), 351 yds (117 / gm), 5 TD

Questions

#1 Will we ever get true information on Watson's injury...The actual injury looked pretty bad (like most tackles by the destRoyer) but we haven't really been told the extent of the injury / recovery time

#2 When Watson returns, how many targets will Welker lose

#3 Has the injury to Watson allowed Brady to find a favorite WR?

A few further observations...

1) Welker has added a couple of garbage TD's that last couple of weeks.

2) All the turmoil surrounding "running-up-the-score-gate" may cause the Pats to tone it down in the coming weeks.

3) Mr. Kraft didn't seem overly enthused about his starters still playing late in the game when it was basically over.

4) HOWEVER, Welker seems like he would be one of the guys still playing at the end even if BB decided to tone it down and allow Cassell to run the offense.

I thought Welker's explosion coincided with Watson too, and it may yet be the case...that said, the last three games have also been Brady's three biggest days of the season with 5, 6, and 5 TDs. That likely has more to do with it, and if he keeps up at that level, you can't bench any Pat recieving threat.

Watson returning might lead to a stinker or 2 from Welker, but I'd wager he stays firmly in the top 10.
