I would say I don't have much of a chance unless the punter is basically trying to kick it right to me Australian rules style. If I've gotta do any kind of tracking(especially backwards) I don't like my chances just right outta the stands.

The problem with this poll is that some people didn't answer the question being asked. Could you do it? No, probably not.Would you like the opportunity to try? Yes, Id love to!
I also think being pulled out of the stands and only have one attempt would severely reduce your chances, regardless if you have done it in the past.

I doubt most would even get a hand on the ball. To track a professionally punted ball and get in position is going to be harder than catching it for most.

I'd love to watch pro baseball flyballs get misjudged all day by the 59% of the no doubters as well while we're at it.

I voted prob not bc of how far and high the punt would travel it would be unlikely to catch the first one.

I would have a better chance of catching a punt than a Kurt Warner zip pass.

If you can track a fly ball in the outfield, this should be easier.

What is wrong with you people? Have any of you ever seen punters warm up before games? They kick the ball to these guys with big red x's on their shirts who look nothing like professional athletes. These guys catch quite a few. Judging it would not be that big a deal since most punts cover around the same 40 - 50 yards.

Right they don't catch them all and they do it on a regular basis. So for a one off out of the stands with no practice I think it's easy to assume most folks are not going to catch it first time cold.

Of course I could catch a punt from an NFL punter. Could I catch a punt from an NFL punter with a gunner coming at me? Only if the punter leads me perfectly in my b-line to the tunnel.

I think there needs to be a choice between "Yes, no doubt" and "Probably not". There certainly would be some doubt, but I think I probably could. But given only the choices, I'd probably have to go with "Probably not". Given a few practice catches I think my chances would increase significantly.

Yes, I could catch it. Yes, I would be waving my hand over my head FAR too early. And the ball wouldn't bounce off my facemask like Jacoby Jones.

You are 100% sure based on the situation laid out?
Professionals don't even catch them 100% of the time in practice, so obviously I wouldn't get 100%. But in no wind, and a normal punt, I like my chances. I'm still coordinated and have good instincts with moving objects. I think most people who still play sports and have a decent ability to react would do fine. The biggest issues are wind and the wall of hulking beasts running at you. Take those two out of the equation and it's not so difficult. I imagine I'd get the majority of them. It'd definitely be easier than catching passes from an NFL QB.

So me and exactly one other guy in this thread are the only 2 people who actually drink at football games? Really? Because most people I know aren't sober at the football games they attend. In fact, outside of the dd, no one I know abstains from drinking at football games. This is a pretty significant additional factor no one is talking about.

At Lambeau on Sunday neither of the two halftime contestants was able to make the catch (from a jugs~style machine at about 40 yds). My friends and I decided at the time that having to wear what appeared to be a regulation NFL helmet was a huge factor and agreed that none of us would likely have fared any better under the circumstances.

Absolutely. Equipment manager for a college football team in one of the big conferences, and shagged punts all the time. Actually had a punter drafted (or signed, don't remember) to the NFL.

Now catching a ball shot out of the Jugs machine? no effing way. I stepped in front one time and nearly died.

Jayrod could not only catch it on the run, he could reverse field and stiff arm multiple NFL caliber attackers on his way to the endzone.

No. I'm just surprised/shocked that of all the people that are actually discussing this in the thread (not just voting), only 2 of us apparently drink when attending football games. Carry on.

Does the punter want me to catch it?
I actually think this is a very good question, perhaps a decisive one. If the punter doesn't want you to catch that punt, then if you're not a professional football player you're chances are extremely low.But if an NFL punter actually wants you to catch the punt, then I have a feeling that he's good enough that your chances will be somewhat OK, provided you have decent hand skills and coordination. Say about 30%.

If we are talking cold out of the stands and right into an actual NFL game with >50k people watching, maybe 10-25%. No time to warm up + pressure + pure shock = no concentration.
I think you meant to type 0%, especially with NFL players bearing down on you. There would be piss coming down your leg.

I know a field goal kicker's kick is different, but could you do

?(For those that remember, it is a guy from a 1995 MNF game between Bears and Packers, and the guy jumps off the stands to catch the FG kick. Watch to the end and you get an interview with the guy, he is special...I say that as a Bears fan.)

If I can catch a fly ball anywhere in the OF near me, over the shoulder etc, I should be able to catch a football, right?
The flight of a round object is much easier to judge than the flight of a leather torpedo.
oh c'mon

a baseball is smaller, traveling at a higher rate of speed...can be hooking or slicing....and you don't typically have the luxury of being able to trap it against your body.

If the average male schlub in my office, who didn't play HS sports can generally track and catch a softball, he can catch a punt.

This isn't even a question. Before the games, the punters kick to employees of the team (not players). Some of these dudes look like they've never stepped foot on a field as a player, yet they catch them with regularity. I've seen some catch punts one handed. They also catch missed long FGs.

LOL at the "if you can track a softball you can catch a punt"

Was a punt returner in HS and while not in game, in college. #### is HARD to catch, especially from a punter skilled enough to get a lot of rotation - or a short kick that you need to judge while the balls going end over end / wobbly.

This was HS and D3 - I'd say a pro would be almost twice as hard to catch. One of the reasons I couldn't be relied on in college is because it was hard for me to consistent catch it clean.

So FFA jocks, let's make a wager and I'll pull Sean Landeta out of retirement for a day.

If you can track a baseball that's 1/10th the size, moving three times as fast, across three times the distance I'm pretty sure a punted football's not going to cause a lot of problems. Catch it every time? Maybe not. But often enough.

Guys, you are making yourselves look bad. Seriously. Like you've never actually played these sports, bad.

TRACKING is NOTHING the issue. Actually CATACHING a punt with spin designed to make to go high, far and difficult to catch is the issue.

Now, you can correct me if I am wrong in my assumption, but have you caught punts from even a decent high school punted? If not, you have NO idea what you're talking

Have you ever seen the schlubs catching punts before a game? Am I to assume they were all former college players? Please.

Yes. From an all-state high school punter that went on to play D1 ball. Not saying I would catch every one, but I would catch most. I have good hands.

Not sure about your point about the spin making it difficult to catch. A nice spiral is easier to catch than a wounded duck or a knuckleball.
