Counting Crows - Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings (1 Viewer)

Third

I may be the only one, but I am looking forward to getting the Counting Crows album in my hands.

Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings is the band's first new studio album in almost 6 years. It probably won't make a huge commercial splash, but I'm betting it will be quality.

As a side note, Counting Crows is THE band for me. Everyone has their favorite...most people have those one or two bands that they really dig, but these guys are mine. I bought their first album during my senior year of high school and can specifically remember when and where I bought each of their next studio albums. When we were dating, my wife and I drove to Nashville to see C.C. play with the Wallflowers. By chance, the older brother of one of my best friends in high school was a childhood friend of Ben Mize, former drummer of C.C. - my friend and his brother got to hang out with the band during their peak in the mid-90s, so I always heard cool stories from those days. Counting Crows was kinda the soundtrack for my high school, college, and young adult life.

It's a good day.

Criminally underrated band. August & Everything After is phenomenal...
Fantastic album, but they have been flat since then. A real snoozer...
Disagree, guy. When I bought the next record and cranked up "Angels of the Silences" I thought 'THIS IS GOING TO BE AWESOME!' then "Daylight Fading I was thought, 'THAT'S OKAY I GUESS'....They've been flat since then.

Great band. August and Everyting After is an absolute classic. I might be the only one who feels this way, but This Desert Life is extremely underrated. Mrs. Potter's Lullaby is an incredible tune.

The Across a Wire double album with their Storytellers appearance as Disc 1 and Hammerstein show as Disc 2 is outstanding. The Storytellers versions of Mr. Jones and Have You Seen Me Lately are superior to the originals (imo), and became the norm for future live renditions.

August and Everything After is my favorite album of all-time. In fact it has been in my CD player in my truck for the last month. CC are great.

Very underappreciated band :goodposting:

If my efforts to get the album for free fail, I'll be picking it up

Pissed they're not touring near New Orleans. I've seen them a handfull of times and they put on a great show

Different strokes, I guess. Recovering the Satellites was generally considered by critics to be their best album. Some of the band's best stuff never makes it to radio - and therefore never gets heard by the masses - because Adam Duritz is such a uncompromising control freak. If he writes a song that goes 7 minutes - he pretty much universally refuses to cut it down for the sake of a radio track.

There hasn't been as much chart success on the last few albums, but the quality of music hasn't slacked off IMO. If we really had this discussion, I could point you to 15-20 tracks off the last few albums that are as good as August and Everything After. Of course, it's all subjective.

That's fair. I heard a few tracks off later albums that I liked (Mrs. Potter's Lullaby being one of my faves), but ultimately I never heard one of their later albums straight through and thought "man, great album." AAEA is a disc I can pop in and enjoy start-to-finish.

The new album isn't very good

They are one of my favorite live bands but this album is just not good. It could be a grower, but I kinda doubt it.

Didn't they remake that Amy Grant song about a parking lot?

Man.....this band ROCKS!!!

:goodposting: I remember hanging out at my best friends place in Newport R.I when this album peaked. Sitting out at an outside bar watching all the tourist and eating seafood and drinking all day while the bar had this CD on. Great times.

:lmao: It was Joni Mitchell.
 The original or the remake?

ETA: WTH is Joni Mitchell and why do you know who that is?
Big Yellow Taxi - by Joni Mitchell
Joni Mitchell was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. In 1995, she received Billboard's Century Award. In 1996 she was awarded the Polar Music Prize.

She has received nine regular Grammy Awards during her career, with the first coming in 1969 and the most recent in 2008. She received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002, with the citation describing her as "one of the most important female recording artists of the rock era" and "a powerful influence on all artists who embrace diversity, imagination and integrity."
:lmao: at "WTH is Joni Mitchell?"

love the crows, cannot wait to get itAWESOME in concert
 I loved their 1st CD, and went to go see them in NYC, had heard from someone they can put you to sleep. Not me, one of the better shows I have seen. That CD is one of the few I would just hit play. 1-11 no need to skip. :lmao:

Outstanding band. I can't wait to hear the new album.

One thing I've noticed with CC is that outside of August & Everything After, I haven't necessarily loved the albums the first time I heard them. After a few listenings, however, they really seem to grow on me. Hard Candy in particular I felt like was weak the first time through, but now it's in my CD player all the time.

Agree 100%...and I think this is what Otis was getting at. You knew AAEA was great immediately. I wasn't that taken with Hard Candy at first, but it really is stellar. Given the choice, I would probably listen to Hard Candy over the others. "Holiday in Spain," "If I Could Give All My Love," "Miami," and "Goodnight L.A." are some of the band's very best stuff.

Really looking forward to picking up this CD today. God, please please please let it be good. I am really not in the mood for mediocre after waiting 6 years for a new album.

I love the Hard Candy album. I think it's their best since AAEA. It certainly isn't a snoozer.

Well, I picked this up after work and just listened to it start to finish.

Mediocre it is not. It is terrific. I have a much better first impression with this album than I did with the 3rd and 4th albums.

"Hanging Tree" "Los Angeles," "Insignificant," "On Almost Any Sunday Morning," "You Can't Count On Me," "Le Ballet D'Or," and "On a Tuesday In Amsterdam Long Ago" are all A+ tracks. It is very much a CC-sounding album, yet the sound has evolved quite a bit since the last album.

"Hanging Tree" may be one of my favorite CC tracks ever in terms of first impression.

Looking forward to hearing what others think. I'm very satisfied.

What's sadder, someone who's not bright enough to know who music legends are, or pretending there's something cool about that?

 Huh?

My musical tastes are more in tune with Led Zep, PJ, Rage & Tool. Counting Crows just aren't a style I like, so I'm joking around about the Joni Mitchell song. I really didn't know who she was until this thread, but it isn't exactly a field I've invested much time studying.

And I don't think I'm cooler for not knowing who she is, just for not liking Counting Crows.

Well, since you mentioned it a few times, you seemed to be wearing your lack-of-knowledge like it was a badge or something. As for Joni Mitchell, she's not exactly Melissa Manchester or something. She is a very respected singer/songwriter. I guarantee you that all members of Led Zep, Pearl Jam, Rage, & Tool know who she is.

I'm not wearing anything right now, just in case you are wondering. And I'd expect those guys to know who she is if she is big in their industry, it is what they do for a living. They probably know about hundreds of musicians who I've never heard of.

I hope better than the recorded music. My lady friend is a HUGE fan and determined to get me to go to a concert with her. She claims I'll somehow like them more when I see them live. I am not a big fan of their recorded music. Liked AAEA and some mellower stuff they sing, but really don't like the upbeat stuff when Duritz gets all whiny. And I have the urge to punch him in the face sometimes. I even said so in an unexcpected person you'd like to fight thread here some time ago. I would have a hard time listening to a record all the way through. Should I sit the concert out? Anna Begins > Omaha

She's not my special lady. She's my ####### lady friend. I'm just helping her conceive.

Give 'em a shot. They chage up some of their "whiney" songs to more mollower and slower type tunes on occation. Its worth a try.
