Now imagine that he's playing FB for the first time in his career this pre-season...I was actually pretty shocked to see a street free agent (Tolbert) in the starting lineup on the first series. Overall he started a little shakey, but I thought as the game went on he played pretty well. A far cry from costal carolina last fall.
Felix Jones PreSeason Week 1 HighlightsI've watched it from a few angles, and it looks like Felix shook the first hit, but went down when the defender locked onto his leg. So the positive is he didn't go down immediately, but the negative is he needs to both shake the hit AND keep moving so the defender doesn't get a second chance. I also noticed he was sideways, instead of North South when it happened. He's going to need to know when to turn vertical for hits like that if he wants to keep moving forward.Good posting EBF, it's about what I think. On the Felix Jones run, I watched that tackle a few times because he did get stopped dead in his tracks and I didn't like to see that but then I found myself being too critical as it was one run, one play. I've got to see a lot more of him. Same thoughts on Choice, plus it was so late in the game, who was that run against? A long way to go to predict what kind of back he'll be but I guess it's better to look good against backups than to not look good.Just watched the game highlights and the individual highlights for Felix Jones. I thought Jones showed some of his strengths and some of his weaknesses. He's a nifty runner in the open field. He made a few nice moves and turned some short runs into longer gains with his quickness. On the downside, he got stopped dead in his tracks on a run where a safety came up and smacked him. I think he's going to be a good change of pace back and possibly more down the road. Power is a question mark.
Tashard Choice had a nice TD run. He looks more filled out in a Cowboys uniform than he did as a Yellow Jacket. There's a chance he could become the next Michael Turner: a guy you grab very late who eventually becomes a starter in the NFL. Obviously there's a long way to go before we can predict that kind of success though.
Overall, I was impressed, and think with some minor adjustments to his game he's going to be nearly unstoppable.
Thanks for the link......I didn't see that screen play to Felix. I must have been in the bathroom at the bar or looking at Keno for a second.Switz, ya he turned his back/shoulder to that tackler. I saw that the first time but didn't want to get more technical than I already was with that one run but I'll tell you who that reminds me of and that's Herschel Walker. Herschel used to get tackled on the side like that and I hated the way he ran at times. He was MUCH MUCH tougher to bring down when he was running hard, shoulders square and delivering a boom. As good as he was, he never reached his potential as a NFL pro in my opinion.Felix Jones PreSeason Week 1 HighlightsI've watched it from a few angles, and it looks like Felix shook the first hit, but went down when the defender locked onto his leg. It's funny that people put so much on combine 40 times. A lot posts I've read stated that Jones wasn't fast enough. He's plenty fast and slippery.Felix Jones PreSeason Week 1 HighlightsI've watched it from a few angles, and it looks like Felix shook the first hit, but went down when the defender locked onto his leg. Easier said than done. He tried to block Johnson, but Johnson outweighs him by close to 100 pounds, had a running start, and just threw Tolbert aside (into the second untouched DL).I don't think there's anything Tolbert can do about that. When a fullback is trying to block a defensive tackle, something went wrong well before that point. This one is on Newberry.Actually, I would blame Tolbert on that play. Although it wasn't his fault 2 Cowboys were there, he initially blocked Tank Johnson, kind of hit him and then went to the Cowboy coming around end.The mistake Tolbert made was he should have just stayed on Tank Johnson.I can't blame Tolbert on that - actually 2 Cowboy's linemen came free and Tolbert was left holding the bag.Tank Johnson did NOT come through untouched. Tank bulldozed his way through the kindergarten block of your fullback Tolbert. Though, I agree on second look that its looks like an O-lineman whiffed on his blocking assignment and left the fullback out to hang with trying to block Tank.Sack is at 8 seconds into this vid link. For the Chargers, I really didn't like seeing Philip Rivers get sacked on his first pass attempt. The defender came though untouched, and it looked like Jeromy Clarey was the one standing around looking stupid.

This is true... though I thought Jones did some nice footwork on his third carry to get the 5 yards. He was in traffic for all 5 of those yards he got.I liked his leg drive at the end of his 19 yard run, but was disappointed with his second and last carry. On his second carry he needed to drive through the guy, and he literally stopped and lowered his shoulder thinking the guy would bounce off and not wrap him up. On his last carry, that shoe string tackle... he was going to go down any way, I don't tihnk he oculd avoid the guy that tagged him when he fell, but still.I just finished watching this one and wanted to note (along with some others) that Austin looked extremely solid - good hands, physical, good separation, runs good routes. I didn't see great speed from him, and he neglected to come back to the ball on several occasions, but apart from that he looks like he can be productive in the NFL. I don't think he'll usurp Crayton's spot, as Crayton looks to have more speed, but I would expect Austin to be a productive WR 3, and fill in for Owens when injured (or when Owens leaves the team).
I would take the Cowboy's running back performances with a grain of salt - on just about all their major gainers they were running untouched into the secondary due to poor run defense - they really weren't doing much exceptional on their own to get into open space. Felix Jones definitely has breakaway speed however.
i don't think it's possible for him to be as good as you think he is...unless he does in fact come from Krypton. But overall, he showed good moves, great vision, and an ability to run the ball from traditional RB formations. I thought he looked the best of the Dallas RBs versus SD. But it was just one preseason game. Need to see more proof he's as good as I think he is.
Agree. He's got way more quicks than Barber. I want to see more of how he does in traffic at/behind the line these next few weeks - which I think will determine if he is in a real time share or is relegated to change of pace when the regular season rolls around. The Cowboys look very, very impressive (based on one lowly preseason game), confirming my feeling that they're the class of the NFC and one of the top two or three teams in the NFL.But overall, he showed good moves, great vision, and an ability to run the ball from traditional RB formations. I thought he looked the best of the Dallas RBs versus SD. But it was just one preseason game. Need to see more proof he's as good as I think he is.
Shhhhh.... don't let out his secret.I think you're in the wrong thread BTW - it's Chris Johnson who is faster than a speeding bullet, and leaps tall buildings in a single bound. I just think Felix Jones is on par with Thurman Thomas and Marshall Faulk - that's alli don't think it's possible for him to be as good as you think he is...unless he does in fact come from Krypton. But overall, he showed good moves, great vision, and an ability to run the ball from traditional RB formations.
