Cowboys Clearing Cap Room for Nnamdi? (1 Viewer)

Here's a breakdown of the actual numbers if you are interested. Cowboys Cap Numbers and Nnamdi Speculation

I found it interesting that the Cowboys cut Williams, but that whole "soft cap" that was mentioned in the article was definitely something I wasn't aware of. That's going to be HUGE this year IMO, and is why we'll probably continue to see so many huge contract veterans be dropped.

Although I don't think signing Nnamdi would be possible without cutting Newman, I think the fact that it's a possibility is a good thing. I think they can sign both Nnamdi and Free, but not sure what they'd do with their Dline if that happened.

God I love free agency, thank god that lockout is over!

So I'm clear, you're proposing that the Cowboys spend all of their perceived cap space on signing one player, and only giving one of the best corners in the league $6.75M? Or are you assuming that there will be more cuts to come?

Oh definitely not, the $6.75 Million would barely be enough for the rookies. As the article said, more cuts and veteran restructuring would definitely be necessary. A surprising cut like Newman wouldn't be far-fetched. While he's 2 years younger than Nnamdi, the tradeoff in talent is significant. Free is hands down their #1 priority, but that Davis release was surprising since there's no clear replacement for him. Leads me to believe they're manuevering for a big upgrade elsewhere on the roster.

Continue the math, if you would. I would like to see how you make the numbers work for the entire team. Personally, I can't see how they can sign anyone big. They had their chance at the title the last two years and blew chunks. I don't see them maneuvering for a big move...I see them trying to get out of their own way.

They've been talking about this around here for the last week or two. If the Cowboys restructure a couple of deals (romo, Austin, Ware) and with the guys they have/or are cutting, they could sign both Free and Nnamdi.

The problem is that they also have needs at OG (Davis gone and Kosier a FA), S (big time) and DE/CB to a lesser extent. Prior to Garrett, I wouldn't be surprised if they had done this. However, with the moves today (Davis, Williams, Barber gone) I think they are looking more at re-tooling across the board then one big splash.

Just a hunch, but I think they re-sign Free, Bowen and Hatcher (DEs) and then make some moves on middle-tier guys at areas of needs.

If I was the GM, these are the guys I would be looking at:

Eric Weddle - S

Donte Whitner - S

Michael Huff - S

Cullen Jenkins - DE

Marcus Thomas - DE

Kedric Golston - DE

Justin Blalock - G

Chris Chester - G

Robert Gallery - G

Marshall Yanda - G

It's definitely possible. The numbers in the link do add up if they want to restructure. If you look at the numbers for Romo and Austin, and to a lesser degree Gurode and Ware, the restructuring is not as far-fetched as some make it seem. Newman makes $8 Million by himself...just straight up giving his salary to Nnamdi alone is enough in 2011 to keep Nnamdi content. Some bonuses and bigger payouts in year 2 and on would be enough to entice him IMO. Cowboys like Newman, but I'm not sure if they like him at $8 Mil.

Agreed

Free?As in World B.?
Yep. Doug Free getting re-signed is the first priority by a long stretch. He gives Garrett exactly the type of OT he wants. A mobile, flexible guy who can be effective in space. It was no accident that they drafted the most athletic OT in this year's draft in Tyron Smith to pair with him. Bookend mobile, strong OTs are exactly what Dallas has in mind.Free gets probably Top NFL OT money. Clearing ~$17 million with Barber, Roy, and Davis is making that happen.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Free also played RT. If/when Smith is ready for LT, they'd probably swing Free back to the right as he got older and less athletic.

Free played LT last year and RT in the 2nd half the year before as an injury replacement for Columbo. So yes, he has experience at both sides.Tyron Smith played only RT in college but was generally regarded as having the skill set to be a top LT. My guess is that they'll each stay where they are most accustomed. Free on the left and Smith on the right. Free is only 27. So he should be able to stay there for several years.

From the files of wishful thinking comes this blog entry that actually extols its own wishful thinking in the first sentence. The problem is that every local blogger, talk radio host, and general football monkey in every city with a football team is concocting ways that can get Nnamdi into their favorite uniform.

Haha wow, if you don't enjoy the free angecy what if scenarios then I don't know why you clicked on this thread. It's a part of football bro, the speculation, the what ifs, not to mention we've had 130+ days of lockout talk. It's nice to get back to football, don't take it so seriously. Rooting for free agency is all in fun, just like rooting for your team on the field.

This is all the buzz in Dallas right now. And one thing I have learned is never put anything past Jerry Jones. If he thinks this will help them win, he will find a way to make the money work.

I clicked on this thread expecting (well hoping) to see something more than just speculation. I enjoy speculation as much as the next guy, but this is just speculation and could be coming from any team's fan about Nnamdi.
