Puzzling pick by the Cowboys.

Any homers in the know why Parcells and Co. went in that direction with a stud TE already on board?

EDIT: sorry if a Honda discussed in another thread

They are going with a two TE set more often. JJ said they liked the thought of having two capable pass catching TE with TO in goal line situations. This TE is a great pass catcher and a good sized guy.

Cowboys also lost Campbell.

They lost Campbell and the 2TE set is a favorite formation of Parcel's. Fasano is not a threat to Witten, but a sure handed route runner that can block well. DEFs will not know when to cover him and I look for Bledsoe to use him as a safety valve when coverage commits itself downfield on TO, Glenn, Witten. It will be "pick your poison" for defenses to consider.

Thanks for the input, fellas. Just made me a bit nervous as a Witten owner.

That makes sense when they lost a valuable guy like Campbell.

Parcells and Gibbs come from an old school of thought where the best Os can almost let the D know they're running and run right at em' anyway, overpowerring them. Parcells will use two TEs if he has to to get this done.

in spotsNot you, trying to beat this to the punch before people think that'll be their base offense and get carried away.

Whittens rookie contract expires next year too. So better safe devoloping a second one in advance just in case push comes to shove.

When they first picked Fasino I was in shock. What the heck they thinking here? But after reading about Whittens contract and the 2 set TE Parcells prefers it all ended up makeing since.

More holes for Julias..

good point..I agree that the 2 TE set will help both witten and julius. Witten played very well in 2004 but came down to earth in 2005, in part because he was asked to stay in for protection more often than he did with Dan Campbell on the roster

Witten looked absolutely thrilled on NFL Network after this pick. :sarcasm:

Things should be pretty interesting in Cowboys TE land the next season or two.

Thing i dont like is Lewis has great hands. He isnt much of a blocker. So i would look at Jason W. to be the blocker. M Lewis could be the better fantasy TE.
Marcedes Lewis went to Jacksonville in the 1st. It is true he's significantly better receiver than blocker though.Anthony Fasano (Cowboys TE pick in the 2nd) is a nice compromise of both blocking and receiving. However, of the two (Witten and Fasano), Witten is by far the better receiver. Not that Fasano sucks, but Witten finished 6th in TE receptions with 66 last year to go along with 6 TDs. Witten will continue to get his and I wouldn't expect Fasano to take away all that much from his numbers. Owens is probably far more of a threat to take away TDs, I would think.

Sorry, had a brain fart :X I do agree with what you said

Think of it in these terms:

There are 5 skill positions on offense, outside of QB. Baring a sack, one of these 5 guys handles the ball every play. Dallas has strong threats to the defense at 4 of these 5 spots with TO/Glenn/Witten/JJ. Their 2nd TE is totally a blocker, and their FB is not much threat either.

Fasano is a threat to the defense. They can't ignore his passcatching ability. He should be able to beat average LBs. With a threat at the 5th skill positions, defenses will have a much harder time keying on any one guy or part of the Dallas offense. Fasano will be another way to hurt a defense.

Now why they went Fasano over, say Pope, is because he is a good blocker and is reportedly pretty tough. The blocking is key as thats not Witten's strong point.

Fasano is a solid pick and should be a regular player for Dallas next year. He is NOT to replace Witten. Dallas will likely sign Witten to a long term contract during the season. He's not going anywhere. Fasano provides a legit threat at the 5th skill position for Dallas.
