Jerry Jones said the Cowboys are evaluating whether to sign safety Dwight Smith, who was released Thursday by the New Orleans Saints.
According to a source, the Cowboys' interest has nothing to do with Keith Davis' situation but rather taking advantage of an opportunity to add a good player. The source said the team must determine if Smith is a good character fit before pursuing things further. Smith, who turns 28 next month, has been arrested twice in the past three years after accusations of brandishing a gun.
Smith, who played last year with the Saints after beginning his career with Tampa Bay, could give Dallas the ballhawking free safety the team has been seeking. He returned two interceptions for touchdowns in Super Bowl XXXVII and has 14 interceptions in 78 career games.
