Cowher tells his assistant coaches he is retiring (1 Viewer)

Not a surprise but still sad. Thanks for a great run, Bill.

I only ask 2 things:

1) Talk to the Dolphins and see if they'll cough up the dough to woo you out of retirement so at least the Steelers can get some draft picks when you leave.

2) If you don't do #1 please don't come back next season as head coach of the Browns.

I haven't read all of the Cowher threads word for word, but one thing I know I see is the Browns keep coming up as a possible destination. What's the connection?

The simple desire to watch BGP's head explode.

I can't imagine Cowher going anywhere else. Pittsburgh is a blue collar town and it matches Cowher's approach.

Thanks Coach for a great run. Enjoy your retirement.

Always has been one of my favorite coaches. The coaching fraternity is definitely weaker without his presence.

There has been talk that the owner of the Browns has a hardon for Mr. Bill. Whether or not it is true I don't know.Cowher did play and coach for Cleveland for a few years so there is a connection on his part but my gut tells me he probably would not go to Cleveland in respect for the Rooney's. Then again, money talks.

Thanks for finally retiring. May Pittsburgh suffer for many years looking to replace him. I hated watching this man destroy cleveland year after year. Football is loosing a qaulity coach.

One more underachieving year for John Fox and crew in 2007 =

Bill Cowher - HC of the 2008 Carolina Panthers

Thanks for XL Cowher!

Cowher had a great run in Pittsburgh.

If he never comes back to Pitt. I wish him all the best off the field, and all the worst on the field.

Rooneys will fill the void. Won't be easy, but improving on 2006 should be. lame duck season to say the least

Baltimore homer here. The NFL is better with Cowher in it than not. Here's to seeing him in Dallas in 2008. (How's that for coming out of left field?)

An interesting part of this is that his wife and daughter moved to Carolina last year. How old is his daughter?

If she is a teenager, it is doubtful he would want to move while she is still in high school. That might factor in to his decision next year.

His daughter is 15 and is not going to transfer to another school. The Cowhers have already said that they are going to retire in their new home in NC. I think it is very unlikely they will move again. If BC coaches again I think they will maintain their residency in NC.

Wow - imagine that.

He's quitting the team and yet he still has the common decency and balls to face his team and his coaching staff and tell them personally face to face.

A class act that will be missed by all fans of the NFL.

Good Luck Bill and thanks.

:wall:

So Grimm or Wisenhunt - I like them both but think Grimm would be the better candidate. But don't want to lose KW either.

Grimm seems to be the motivator type. I think he's the pick. Whis to ATL. GB Bill.

I can't see that happening for long. A year or two, tops.

Agreed. If he's going to walk anyway, I'd rather see him take the Miami job and get massive compensation. I don't think he will though - for all the speculation about him wanting more $$, I think it's more about kicking back for a year or two and spending time with his family. The way I see it, he probably figures - if I sign another 5 year deal with the Steelers at their max offer of $6.25 million or take a year off to be with my family and then sign somewhere else in '08 at 7-8 million a year (speculation is that he would easily command that on the open market) then the money shakes itself out and the year off is basically "free."So, in short, it's a little bit about money, but not really. I would, however, be much happier to be proven wrong, have him take another job and show that it was ALL about money, and watch the Steelers rake in 4 first-day draft picks in exchange. :D

How about this for a "from out of left field" speculation on my part...

Bill Parcells.

Think about it for a minute. Word is he's basically had it with Jerry Jones and has given him what amounts to a "dump T.O. or I walk" ultimatum. That's not likely to sit too well with JJ. IF Parcells leaves Dallas, the Steelers could be a destination. Consider :

Parcells is a non-nonsense coach who believes in accountability. His philosophy is that you win games by running the football, stopping the run, and generating pressure. He favors a 3-4 defense. He's reaching the end of his career and would likely be looking for a destination where he could step in and win right away. He would want some control over personnel decisions. He'd be looking for a team with respected, hands-off owners that would allow him to make the football decisions. He values tradition.

Sound like a possible fit? Plus, he'd likely only coach a couple more years, meaning the Steelers could still look for that young buck to take over long-term.... or even (dare I say it?) bring Cowher back after he takes a couple of years off? I know, that last part sounds like a desperate dude who got dumped by a hot chick and sits around praying she'll take him back, but I'm just musing - if Cowher wants to sit out a couple of years until his daughter graduates and goes to college, and Parcells only wants to coach 2 years or so, the planets could potentially align that way. I'd have to believe if the Steelers and say, Raiders jobs were open in 2009 and money wasn't a big factor, Cowher would rather return to Pittsburgh where he's revered and where he has tremendous respect for his employers.

But all that aside, how about Parcells in Pittsburgh?
