With 2024 NFL training camps on the horizon, it is again time for the league's true insiders to make their voices heard. ESPN surveyed league executives, coaches and scouts to help us rank the top 10 players at 11 different positions, from quarterback to cornerback and all positions in between. This is the fifth edition of these rankings, and as usual, several players have moved up or fallen off last year's lists.

A reminder of the rankings process: Voters give us their best 10 players at a position, then we compile the results and rank candidates based on number of top-10 votes, composite average and dozens of interviews, with research and film study help from ESPN NFL analyst Matt Bowen. In total, nearly 80 voters submitted a ballot on at least one position, and in many cases all positions. Additional voting and follow-up calls with those surveyed help us break any ties.

Each section includes quotes and nuggets from the voters on every ranked player -- even the honorable mentions. The objective is to identify the best players right now for 2024. This is not a five-year projection or a career achievement award. Who are the best players today?

  1. Patrick Mahomes, KC
  2. Joe Burrow, CIN
  3. Josh Allen, BUF
  4. Lamar Jackson, BAL
  5. Matthew Stafford, LAR
  6. Justin Herbert, LAC
  7. C.J. Stroud, HOU
  8. Aaron Rodgers, NYJ
  9. Jared Goff, DET
  10. Dak Prescott, DAL
Who should be higher and lower on the list?

General thoughts?

:2cents:
You can argue against it but Hurts over Rodgers imo. Love will be on the end of season list but understandably misses this one.

First of all, surprised a little to not see Hurts or Lawrence on this list. Hurts has much more FF value I guess and Lawrence has not lived up to the hype coming in.
Glad to see Goff on this list. He has earned it.
A little surprised to see Burrow so high, but I have to remember this is not FF. The same with Stafford.
To see Stroud on this list so soon says volumes about his game.
I guess we will see soon enough if Rogers still belongs here.
Dak continues to put up good numbers despite playoff failures. If the Cowboys decide not to pay him, someone will.

I forgot about Love. Another year like last year and he will be there

If this is 2024 Top 10 QB from an "insiders" perspective, I think the REAL NFL and Fantasy are far apart ...

#4 Lamar Jackson is a dynamic player, but low volume passing game limits him as a QB (his running makes him an athlete but still limited QB)
#8 Aaron Rodgers is recovering from a significant injury and father time is still undefeated. I need a "prove it" performance early to have him even Top 15 NFL QB rank

Missed the Mark:
Jalen Hurts - how is he not on this list? He should be Top 3-4 range with his performances
Jordan Love - I agree with above another year to add him to the list
Trevor Lawrence - big fan but clearly has not lived up to expectation (mostly outside his control - bad coaching & drops) but needs do show better

Yes. Hurts, Cousins, Love and Lawrence were in the honorable mention section.

Goff shouldn't be in any top-10. Top-15 is arguable. Goff isn't very good under pressure and can't create on his own, that just comes up less in Detroit than it does elsewhere, which is a credit to Ben Johnson and the supporting cast. I don't see what makes Goff better than Tua or especially Purdy who both get dinged for their playcaller/supporting casts.

I'd swap Dak and Stroud as well. I'm not ready to throw Stroud quite THAT high yet, and Dak is perpetually underrated. Dak has been carrying Dallas for years, and for whatever reason he doesn't get the credit he deserves, just because he (like pretty much all non-Mahomes QBs) struggles against SF. Dak very much had a case for NFL MVP last season.

Hurts should be in any top-10, I think his knee was a lot worse than let on down the stretch last season, and he probably shouldn't have been playing. Rodgers is tough to rank, but that's about where I'd have had him pre-Achilles tear.

Purdy is much more than a system QB. He gets great players the ball which is what he is supposed to do. He is also very good at improvising.

Seeing Rodgers on this list made me feel similar to how I did when I saw Chubb near the top of their RB list and that is a lot of these people who were polled treated this more like a career achievement award then a list of who is the best right now.

I believe they got the top 3 right, though I'd have Josh Allen at 2.

Lamar at 4 is fine, no problem with it and if we are basing this on just regular season play he should be higher, but why does he not get hammered for their playoff losses like Dak does?

Purdy>Goff IMO, better pocket movement skills.

Hurts not being on the list is probably the most surprising. As a pure passer he does not belong anywhere near the list but for everything he brings to the table it seems like he should be but I can understand why he's not. Heard Chris Simms on a podcast yesterday and he did not come out and say he'd take Daniel Jones over Hurts or put them on par with each other, but he sure hinted around the idea they are pretty close. He of course has always had different takes, but he's not alone in seeing some limitations to Hurts passing ability.

Why do I get this gut feeling Joe Burrow's body does not want him to be playing in the NFL? I'm getting Andrew Luck vibes from him, and that wrist scares the crap out of me. I still remember him looking at it as if it wasn't even attached to his body. Someone else in the SP posted about having the same wrist surgery, and said you're never really the same. I will be very curious to see him throwing before the season starts.

Considering he injured himself in camp last year, doubt we see a lot of him prior to kickoff Week 1

I generally like the list, but I'd probably move stafford down to Goff's spot and move everyone goffs spot or higher up one rank.

This was an appropriate rank for him 2 years ago, but hes slipped the last year or so. Hes still good, but not top 5 anymore.

after thinking about it for a moment, I think it's mostly a good list. I agree with Birdie though and think maybe Rodgers should have been replaced with Hurts. I like Purdy alot though. I assume Tua was also an HM.

I actually thought Stafford might have played the best football of his career last season. He just had somewhat low TD numbers because the Rams were dominant in short yardage, where Kyren Williams succeeded on 17 of 18 carries needing a yard (better than the tush push) for a 1st or a TD. Fun stat, if you extrapolate the final 7 games (when Kyren/Kupp were both playing) Stafford was on 5,032 yard, 41 TD, 7 INT pace.

I'm not talking about him actually in full on practices - I just want to watch him throwing the ball.

The NFL veteran executive who said this about Allen has to be someone who passed on him in the draft and is still trying to justify it to their owner:

"One of the more overrated players in the NFL," a veteran NFL executive said. "Immense talent but he makes a lot of mistakes. He's underdeveloped at winning at the line of scrimmage, tends to lock on to targets, more of a thrower than precision passer, forces throws into traffic."

Purdy reminds me a lot of Brady (100% not saying he is going to be Brady) early in his career...the doubters will call him a system QB and ding him for it so they will need a few years of success before they change their mind...for me I see that same "it" factor I saw early in Brady's career...I think this will be the last year he is not easily part of a top 10 list...same with Love who looks poised to be a big time QB.

True, this is the problem with these anonymous polls. You never know what axe someone is grinding. I also take with a grain of salt any opinions coming from FF based sites, they seem to let how good someone is in fantasy creep into their real life NFL rankings.
