Coy Wire (1 Viewer)

Keith Ellison is sidelined with a high ankle sprain.

Coy Wire looked pretty good in preseason and could put up decent numbers. He should be the starter for about a month.

(BTW, another news service reported him as a WILL, IIRC he's a SAM - Crowell is the WILL).

The SAM isn't VERY valuable in FF, but he's decent for depth.

I'd also bump both Crowell and Poz up a bit as they should get more tackles.

Ellison was the Will, Crowell the Sam. Wire will play WLB. He's not a great option unless you feel strongly that the Bills won't play much nickel in any given matchup. The key thing with Ellison out is that Poz is unquestionably the second nickel backer and he'll probably have to play pretty poorly to lose the job when Ellison returns.

Thanks Jene. :sadbanana:

I can't wait anymore, i'm grabbing Whitner.

It means i have to drop Wimbley CLE LB, but my LBs are so deep i can swing it.

Whitner will benefit even more from the Ellison injury. That Buf Def is hurting and he'll clean up the mess often.

:goodposting:

It does look like lot of tackles will be piling up in Buffalo.

I have Poz, Crowell and Whitner in my main league. :hereshoping:

With all the praise DiG was getting in the preseason, any chance he perhaps steps into the WLB spot? They said he's a play maker. I'm curious.

Ellison also got a lot of praise in preseason, so I don't know if they'll move DiG over there.

I think it's a bit odd that Poz would be in the nickle over Wire, who's a converted DB.

Wire was always considered weak in coverage at safety. His strength will be in run support and pursuit.

So is Ellison the WILL or SAM? I'm getting confused. Jene is stating that Eillson is the WILL, but FBG's depth chart has Ellison as the SAM. I need to make some cuts this week and it would nice to get some clarification on this. Thanks.

Bob may be going off the gamebooks, which had Ellison SAM and Crowell WEAK. The first BUF preseason game had Ellison weak and Crowell strong, with both shifting by offensive formation. Crowell has been productive as an every down LOLB in the past though.

Yes, but it's relative. Is weak coverage for a DB worse than good coverage for a LB? I'm not sure.

I agree. In Wire's case, though, it was an instinct, ball skill, recovery issue rather than a man coverage thing. Since it'd be predominantly zone coverage in this scheme, I don't think he's a fit for the nickel. I think it's Poz but it's definitely worth watching.

I don't understand why it's going on, but the Bills OLB spots have been very confusing during the preseason. They've consistently been listing Crowell at WLB and Ellison at SLB in many places, but when I watched the preseason games they were almost always lined up with Ellison on the weak side and Crowell on the strong side. There were times when the offense shifted and the LBs swapped sides as well to remain WLB/SLB instead of just left/right like I expected them to be. Wire did fill in for Crowell in one preseason game and he played on the strong side, but he should basically be the WILL with Crowell in the lineup. I really can't figure out why so many places keep listing Crowell as the WLB b/c it certainly doesn't seem to match up with anything that's been shown or officially reported.

I agree that Posluszny should remain in the nickel b/c he has more size and is more capable of defending the run as well as the pass. Although he struggled in coverage at safety, I think Wire could wind up being somewhat above-average in in coverage as a LB. We'll see though. He's looked pretty good in the preseason and I wouldn't be surprised if he puts up some solid tackle games early on.

You would think they would want Crowell in the wiil, with that being the so-called playmaker position, espcially now with Ellison on the shelf ... And Wire, the conevrted safety ... ala Thomas Davis, playing sam.

Crowell would be an excellent WLB but he also has more size and strength than guys like Ellison and Wire that will allow him to hold up on the strong side a lot better than those guys will. The run defense is a major concern on this squad and asking a 220lb Wire to try and anchor at the point of attack on the power side of the formation is a recipe for disaster, IMO. Bills defense is built on speed and the OLBs are somewhat interchangeable, but Crowell played SLB last year when Ellison was in the lineup and there's been no real indication of a change taking place.
