COY WIRE? (1 Viewer)

whats the deal as for right now ATL homers... this guy can be gold considering im weak at DB heading into the finals. Injuries force him into action for one game??

Coy Wire is neither a DL nor DB. He plays LB.

He started at strongside linebacker yesterday in place of Michael Boley who has fallen out of favor with the coaching staff.

Wire came off the field on passing downs but still make a decent play against running teams as the SAM generally produces decent numbers in ATL's scheme.

So Lofton played nickel?

Scooped him up in all 3 of my leagues (all redraft and all championship games... i know im bragging)... but this guy really can help those of us that are still in it... With injuries to Bob Sanders, Jermaine Phillips... this guy can get me some points at DB for yahoo.

What about next year? Anyone with thoughts there? Boley is a FA at year's end. How's Wire looking for '09 and beyond? I noticed he's 30 and had decent time in Buffalo, but nothing great since. I'm a little leery.

I remember this guy. He had some buzz once in Buffalo, but the year (IIRC it was 06 or 07) where he put up good numbers it was because the LBs were decimated in Buffalo with injuries. The guy is a 2nd-string LB and a special teamer long term, not much more.

He can play DB or DL on yahoo.

While I play in a dynasty league, I've been plugging in some different FA DB's for the past few weeks to try and have my first ever shot at the title (I'll worry about the dynasty implications later!)

I've made it through to the Championship game and might do the exact same thing with Wire this week if Yahoo* will let me play him as a DB, when he'll have ADP running at him all day at LB.

Could be a very interesting play.

* Yeah I know, but after a decade the other guys are set in their ways and won't move to MFL yet they still pay $130 for PLUS each year

Whats Boley's future look like? I know he's a free agent. Is there going to be much interest? He's obviously undersized but before this year he was mentioned among the better strong side LBers

Boley should draw interest, as you stated, he's on the light side for a sam backer. You would think teams will look at him as a will. also. A zone scheme may be his best fit.

Boley rotated in on passing downs.
Thanks Jene, gosh has Nicholas totally fallen out of favor? Wouldn't think Wire is the long term answer but the fact he's playing ahead of Nicholas is interesting. Be interesting to see if Brooking sticks around next year, I could see him taking a significant pay cut to remain a Falcon.

Falcons like Nicholas enough to have him in when they go to a 3-3-5. May be nothing more than a LOLB/ROLB depth chart deal. Nicholas was apparently going to rotate at the other outside position last week; not sure how that played out yet.And I'm in agreement with the others who cautioned before getting too excited about Wire. This isn't necessarily one of those poo-against-the-wall moves -- the Falcons are right in the thick of things -- but it's still not likely to be a Stewart Bradley like move that carries over into next season. Wire is a journeyman tweener who isn't likely to fit any better here than he has elsewhere. Boley has had plenty of distractions over the past 12 months -- off the field incident, contract concerns, new scheme -- it won't be shocking if the Falcons get him back cheaply for him to re-emerge next season as an every-down player. If not, he may have a tough time finding full time work next year. Plenty of better options on the market and the draft to come. He may be another Demorrio Williams (despite his better all-around talent) in the making.

Seen Boley in on 24 snaps (Atlanta faced 67) only one in base defense (4-3) and that was late in the fourth quarter. Atlanta was in a 3-4 once with Brooking, Boley, Wire and Nicholas.

Wire was active, got off blocks okay, played good; he was 2-1-0 in the overtime, so he would have finished the game 6-0-0. If you’re in a league where you also get special team tackles, your probably good for a couple more solos there, as he had three solos and an assist on special teams. Not sure what to think about him long term, journeyman tweener sounds about right, but he did play well. We should get to see at least a couple more games of him.

It's so much easier to follow players when they have something that distinguishes them from others, such as different socks/shoes, arm pads, gloves, hair hangin out ect... it can be difficult to see their numbers on every play.

I'm in the superbowl this week. Is it safe to start Wire as a DB? Do we think he's going to continue to get all or most of the base defense snaps. Seems like he would have a great chance at getting 5-6 solos again against Minnesota's running game. I cant afford a goose egg from him though.....Gene? :goodposting: )

I haven't heard anything out of Atlanta to assume he won't get the base defensive snaps again. Falcons are in the playoff hunt, so last week's move doesn't fall into the category of seeing what you've got for next season. Is he a safe bet for 5-6 solos? Probably, but we're talking about a replacement level player alongside an emerging MLB, a solid WLB and a very good run supporting SS. The matchup should be enough for him to have a decent week and I think a two solo or less day is less likely than a 6-7 solo or more day.
