One less WR in not that great of FA crop..per Dallas Morning News

Dallas Cowboys to sign Crayton to new deal10:05 PM CST on Thursday, December 27, 2007By CALVIN WATKINS / The Dallas Morning Newscwatkins@dallasnews.com IRVING – On Thursday night, just days away from the regular-season finale on one of the best Cowboys' season in history, the team agreed to a four-year contract with wide receiver and DeSoto native Patrick Crayton. The contract, expected to be signed today, can be worth as much as $14 million. Crayton received a $6 million signing bonus. Dallas valued Crayton more this season after he replaced an injured Terry Glenn as the No. 2 receiver in the lineup. Crayton set career-highs in catches (48), yards (689) and touchdowns (seven) this season. With this new deal, Dallas prevented Crayton from becoming an unrestricted free agent where he could have received a bigger contract. But his desire to remain home was more important than going somewhere else. "This is exactly where I want to be," Crayton said before Cowboys' practice on Thursday. "My client is very happy," said Crayton's agent Fred Lyles. "He didn't consider the money. He considered his family for making his decision. His wife, son and mother are very important to him because they live in Dallas. He's a family person and it means a lot to him." Crayton will have a $1 million base salary in 2008 and $1.5 million in 2009. He receives a base salary of $2 million in 2010 and $2.5 in 2011. But in the final year of his contract he can earn an additional $1 million in salary if he reaches certain incentives. This season, Dallas has re-signed quarterback Tony Romo and nose tackle Jay Ratliff to long-term contracts and reworked outside linebacker Greg Ellis' deal to give him financial security. With Crayton out of the way, Dallas can work on restricted free agents, running back Marion Barber and defensive end Chris Canty for long-term deals. The Cowboys can also seek to keep some key unrestricted free agents such as left tackle Flozell Adams, safety and special teams ace Keith Davis and running back Julius Jones. Dallas has roughly $3.8 million under the salary cap.

My first thought when I heard about this last night was that Dallas was a little worried that Parcells may have been targeting Crayton. Miami could certainly use the help at WR. Samrt move by the Cowboys, IMO.

Parcells maybe be a minor factor, but when you look at the Cowboys, w/o Crayton WR suddenly becomes a major need and could considered a decent need with him. Owens is still very good, but in the 35 range and you never know. Glenn is in his 30s coming off a knee injury. Hurd and Austin did not prove be even reliable NFL#3 with time this season although still young with a chance to develop more. Stanback is converting from college QB.

My question is, does Crayton become the heir apparent to the #1 WR in Dallas when Owens and Glenn hang it up? Is he Crayton to Owens, Wayne to Harrison?

He didn't get #1 WR money so I would say no. Maybe next contract.
Huh?What does getting #1 WR money have to do with where he is in 2 years? He got what the market bore for him. That has zero causation to how he'll be used.
He got good money. And he wouldn't get #1 money till TO is gone. They took care of the guy pretty well. It's not like he's got some 1K yard receiving seasons or probowl appearances on his resume. He got a good deal considering his prior performance. I see this as a, "we're grooming you to be the #1 here in a couple of years," type contract.

I have heard Wade Phillips talk glowingly about Crayton so this signing doesn't surprise me. I don't know what to make of PC's dynasty fantasy value out of this. I guess nudge it up a bit with him being with Romo for the next couple of years.

If Crayton is ever the Cowboys #1 WR we have problems.

I don't think Crayton has the speed or separation to ever be a true #1. He's had a good year but I believe it's because most teams have to game plan for TO, Witten and the running game which leaves Crayton with one on one coverage much of the time. He can thrive in this environment but I think he'd struggle as the first option.

He did not get #1 money because he will not be a #1 WR. I am saying his contract shows his potential.

Shades of Alvin Harper?

Good summary. Crayton finished at WR#33 with standard scoring; a solid third WR. I can't see him moving into the 20-24 range unless TO and/or Witten miss a lot of games. If Glenn stays healthy in '08 then I think he drops down into the 40-48 range; a spot starter.

Then you need to understand how economics works.

Yes, a fourth year player signing a four year contract like this one will probably not become a qualified #1 WR in the NFL and is not expected to be a #1. There is no more grooming that is over with. The Cowboy's believe this and Crayton believes this.

as a crayton dynasty owner this is the best scenario for me. i don't think he has #1WR talent but is a solid #2 on a team with TO and witten. he will continue to get his opportunities with single coverage and safeties keeping an eye on witten. the last thing i wanted was to see him go to miami and be the #1 guy.
