Craziest Thing(s) You've Done To Save Money (1 Viewer)

Read the threads here, called Direct TV said I was switching to Hulu, saved $30.00 a month
Had a weird moment last week when I called Time Warner cable. Didn't say I wanted to cancel, just that I wanted to switch to another package. They told me they couldn't switch one tier out for the other, due to different (higher) pricing on the other tier I wanted. I said "Really?" She said "Hold on one moment." After being on hold for three or four minutes, she came back on and said "What I did was just give you both tiers. But I gave you the promotional price, so it's actually $5 less per month for both than you were paying for just the one." I said "Oh, okay, I guess that works..."

Instead of going to a tire shop and getting a leak fixed for $20 I filled a tire every other day for about 2 mos. I even calculated psi lost per hour but it kept increasing.I think I mentioned it in one of the auto repair threads.

oh com'on.. i offered up some real solid stuff... this classifies as moronic, not savvy
thread title says craziest. Driving around with a flat tire to save a few bucks is not only moronic but crazy and dangerous.
It wasn't flat. When TPMS went off I'd fill it. Never got below 25psi. It was moronic to spend the effort though, not disputing that.
Did this as well to a degree. Two tires kept going near flat towards the end of last summer and it was time to replace all 4. Held off for over a month since I had to buy winters tires and didn't want to buy new summer tires and pay to get them put on for a month, then take them off and buy a new set of winter tires and pay to get them put on.First stop pretty much every time I left the house was a gas station to fill them up (free air).
You could have saved even more money by using a bike pump to top off your tires rather than go out of your way to a free air gas station every few days. It may look silly but it really doesn't take that long to pump up larger truck tires 5-10 psi with a bike pump. Somehow over the years big oil convinced all of us to forget bike pumps and go to their gas stations to fill our tires with their expensive vending machine air and its really not that necessary.

Gas station is a block from my house and I have to drive by it to get on the road I normally take everywhere. Buying a bike pump would have cost money. I have an air compressor now but at that time I didn't.

before we were married my ex wife and i were saving for our first house. she would sign her entire paycheck over to me and i would give her 70 dollars spending money for the entire week. she was studying to be a nurse but was still making around 400 a week working at a nursing home. in hindsight im pretty amazed she did that. super cool woman, even now we still get along great. i remember she gave herself a raise after she got her degree, 100 dollars a week, i was kinda pissed.

since she's an ex, it sounds like she probably still ended up getting closer to $200/wk of the $400 if not more

honestly, joint physical custody and no child support. u gus can call BS if u want. true though. shes a great woman.

I canceled internet to my house... I have DirecTV and internet is an extra $70 a month from Time Warner as a standalone. All we use in the house is our iPad (which I already purchase LTE data for), iPhones (unlimited LTE data plan), and on occasion MacBook Pro (but rarely)... No real streaming or anything like that for Netflix and the like.

My company supplies me with a Mifi Jetpack card which provides internet, obviously my Apple Airport Extreme with high speed being provided has better speed and reach, but this card can go to any room and I have no bill. 3 months in and haven't noticed an issue. Nets me about $900 a year.

I'm so cheap with certain things. :bag:

Instead of replacing my Fios backup battery, which every month or so starts beeping, I just unplug it and replug it back in which buys me about another month. A new battery costs me $35. Been doing this for about a year.

I make my own deodorant and tooth paste. Not only for the savings but to also reduce the chemicals I use on my body. I also switched to a safety razor. Best shave ever and a fraction the cost of replacement cartridges .

Way to stick it to them!

My fridge keeps telling me to replace a filter and some cartridge for the last 8 months.

I'm gonna see how long til the water comes out brown!

I was using the compressor in my garage. You were going to a gas station? You cray cray :)

I would cancel all TV and probably gas before cancelling internet.

And, yes I read that you have 4G. It's that important to have a 30Mbps pipe.

I have a Jetpack card, provides Wifi, obviously not ridiculously fast, but certainly adequate... I just don't see the need to drop $900 a year on something I have for free. If I was a heavy Netflix user, gamer, or something along those lines... But for what we do which is basically surf the internet, I just don't need to pay Time Warner.

I am not sure I have ever done anything to save money. I don't use coupons and I don't do get those stupid drug store cards that give you a discount even though I shop at the same one regularly. I guess I take cans back when I buy food, so that must be about as far I will go to save money.

For the last twelve years I've gotten my car inspected a day after the previous sticker expired to get a sticker for the following month. On Labor day, I will have saved the cost of an entire sticker.

Not crazy, but: Just called Sirius about my one-year introductory fee that expires on Monday. Said I couldn't renew at the new, higher price, so the lady very quickly agreed to extend the introductory rate, which is 50% off.

I once got ticketed at 2am on the first of a month for having an expired inspection sticker. That did not save me money.

You brag about how much you make and how much you spend in LV and restaurants...but you go this route? That $900 is like 3 hrs out for you...

In Mass you have to get them yearly. They just went up from $29 to $35- for the year. A lot of people do it.

What's the ticket for no inspection there? One metermaid can ruin 12 years worth of work in heartbeat!

Just got my first safety razor. Sick of $20 for the generic blades, let alone $25-30 for the Gilette-branded ones.
I just moved to a safety razor 2 months ago. Pretty great and the blades are dirt cheap. And it's manly.

For a sticker? My 5yo daughter has sheets of stickers we got for $1. Rainbows and stars mostly.

Makes sense, no argument against going that way.

But for me, the internet trumps TV. Just about anything you can get on TV you can get on the net + movies + adult entertainments. I'm not sure how good the 4G pipe would work out for that in lieu of TV. So if I had to choose one or the other, I'd ditch paying for TV completely and keep the high speed internet.

I just can't give up the Sunday ticket... I hate Time Warner so much and it's either them or Verizon DSL, not Fios just DSL - my only options, so this was my route. I really hate TWC!

Awesome!!! Watch a few videos on youtube on how to do it. Go slow at first. You're going to love it! Save bank and feel like a Man at the same time. Our parents were on to something with these things. Its a shame or testament to marketing that these fell out of flavor.

Bought a bidet about 3-4 years ago for 20-30 bucks off Amazon. Installed it myself. Buy toilet paper now once in a blue moon (only because the wife uses it).

Don't buy any movie channel packages from Directv. I just record as many movies as I can

when they have free weekends.

I also do the inspection sticker trick. Sometimes I even wait a whole month to get a new one. Haven't got caught yet.

Ollie's and Big Lots are also great places to shop for cheap stuff. I also hit flea markets now and then. A lot of times I can get toiletries really cheap.

I too have refused to change mine. Currently 6 months "past due". No issues.
If your water/ice tastes fine then there's no issue. Worst case is it's the same as tap water.

Look for knockoff brand multipacks on Amazon though. You can save 50% off of the manufacturer filters.

I use discountfilters.com

Agree, the minute the water starts tasting different, it's time to change the filter.

That's interesting. My wife just got her first smartphone so the only thing we need internet for is typing up an occasional document or my son watching YouTube. The Internet bill for just that feels ridiculous. Anyone have any better solution than pay $70 for it?

Mine too, but I have started noticing calcium deposits at the bottom of glasses when the ice melts.

I'm going to pony up and get a new one
