Credit for Holds - Tell me about Shields (LAA) and Linebrink (SD) (1 Viewer)

I am in a total newb in a total points league. From the looks of things the rest of these guys don't know what they are doing even though they have been in this league for years.

It is a 9 team, total points league. I won't post all the scoring details, but Wins are 10 points, Saves are 12 points and Holds are 5 points.

From the looks of things there is value in relievers who accumulate holds. I can only assume the rest of the league is using a draft cheatsheet, which wouldn't include these guys.

I see that Shields and Linebrink were both near the top of the Holds category for the last two years. They both finished around #20 in our league scoring, making them decent options in a pinch at RP (start 3). I see the potential to trade away a reliever for batting help and pick up one of these guys.

Are Holds a repeatable category or should I forget about this.

You want a pitcher that has been named the setup man...

Guys like Shields, Broxton, Linebrink are the men to have...

Basically you want the guy that would take over the closer duties if the closer went down, that would be the guy that would be high on the holds...

Only 16 guys had more than 20 holds last year.

As per your scoring rules, you'd need about 2.5 holds per save to make it worthwhile against a closer. No one is worth it in that regard.

However, you only need 2 holds per win to make it worth while. Last year Linebrink had 36 holds, which equates to 18 wins. That isn't too bad. Shields had 31 and Zumaya had 30, which are 15 game winners.

No one else had over 26.

I would probably grab Shields or Linebrink in a deeper league, as they can also vulture a few wins here and there and some saves. But in a 9 team league, you are probably better off loading up on closers and premium starting pitching only.
