Crosby HAS to get cut this week, right? (1 Viewer)

Between him and Akers it's almost comical how bad they have been. You can't go into the playoffs with a kicker who can't be trusted with a 40 yarder FG. 0-2 again yesterday, routine 42 and 43 yarders. I know he was on the ropes for a few weeks now, but Sunday had to be the nail in the coffin for him, right? Who might they be looking at?

:yes:Stunned that these 2 playoff teams are going with them. I know GB passed up a routine 40-44 yarder with Crosby yesterday as well.Unless he just doesn't have it anymore (or isn't healthy enough), I'm surprised Nate Kaeding isn't on one of their rosters already.

He certainly shouldn't be on any fantasy rosters, but it sounds like McCarthy's sticking with him. I don't like to question a coach that has been as successful as Coach McCarthy, but I'm puzzled on this one?

Kaeding is coming off a torn ACL, injured his groin in preseason and was cut after hitting 10 of 15. I'm definitely surprised there isn't a good option out there, but not expecting to see Kaeding on a roster this year. Cundiff was also cut this year for performance. Who else is out there? It would have to be someone who can kick off, so not Longwell or Kasay.

I was surprised to see Olindo Mare kicking for the Bears yesterday. His kickoffs were strong and he drilled his only FG attempt, a 35 yarder. I would have thought he was long retired.

Correction - - Mare was 2/2 yesterday. I see that he beat out Cundiff and Rackers for the Bears job last week.

He beat out Cundiff and and Rackers. I guess Cundiff really is that bad.

Neil Rackers?
Crosby is 7/10 from 40-49Rackers was 4/8 last yearCrosby is really only missing 50+ yarders at this point. You can say what you want but I would also not bring Rackers who is a dome kicker for 10+ years and move him to Green Bay in winter.Crosby is4/4 - 20-295/7 - 30-397/10 - 40-491/8 - 50+Could he be better? Yes, is there a better option out there? I doubt it as the Bears picked up Olindo who hit on pace with Crosby last year in Carolina.

Josh Brown is having no difficulty kicking outdoors after being a dome kicker.ETA - I realize he's still with the Bengals but if Nugent returns this week and Brown is released I'd pounce if I was Thompson.

As an Aaron Rodgers owner I prefer they keep Crosby. Going for it on 4th down from the 30 is awesome.
Rodgers does convert on 40% of 3rd and 4th downs in general.http://www.footballperspective.com/quarterback-performance-on-third-and-fourth-downs/I would assume if you made a 3rd and 7 a 4th and 3 after a short pass it would even increase. You could pass on field goals in general.

Don't forget the 5/7 from 30-39, which is a chip shot for FG kickers these days. See stats all the time about kickers who have LONG streaks of not missing any FG's inside of 40 yards. So in other words he's 13-25 from anything pretty much past extra point range. Think about that. He's horribly inaccurate.

Maybe McCarthy has him on a 1 game leash? Give him another week now that the pressure is off? See what happens? Personally, I would have made an addition a few weeks ago, made the change this past Sunday. But now that we are only 2 weeks out, you have to consider the risk of adding someone new vs sticking with someone in a bad rut.

Either way, watching Crosby is as nerve wracking as it was watching Favre in his last several seasons w/ GB - every time the game was on the line you knew the ball was getting turned over.

Favre was never this bad. Not even close. Maybe as a rookie with the Falcons or in his final season with the Vikings when he was basically a punching bag but never with Green Bay. Hell, his last season with the Packers he played at an MVP level and led the team to the NFC title game.

Crosby is arguably the worst player at his position in the entire league. It's a joke that a team with Super Bowl aspirations isn't even bringing in other kickers for tryouts. I can appreciate the loyalty to a player who has been good in the past but you don't get many chances to win Super Bowls. This is an enormous risk McCarthy and Thompson continue to take and I sure as hell hope it doesn't blow up in their faces.

Variance is horribly underrated as whole in sports, and FG kicking might be near the top of the list. In fact, it might be optimal to have a kicker that is thought to be bad but is actually good. That way a coach can get away with playing the true odds and going for it more often on 4th downs.

How about a 33 year old kicker with an excellent kicking record in one of the league's toughest outdoor stadiums?

Paging Jeff Reed...

I'm not saying that Crosby should be kept. But Thompson and McCarthy have shown patience with other players in the past and it has paid off. James Jones for one. Mike Neal another.

Ryan Longwell.
Can Longwell get a kickoff past the 10 yard line outdoors right now?
With a SB possibly on the horizon, you either have Masthay kick off, or keep 2 kickers. Longwell for FG, Crosby for KO. Until Crosby can show he can be trusted again.

It's easier to be patient with those types of players because they can be benched. Crosby can't be unless the Packers bring in another kicker and carry two. I'm in favor of that if the team really doesn't want to part ways with Crosby. But it's idiotic to keep starting someone who is performing at such a horrible level. If you (and by you I mean Thompson and McCarthy) want to keep Crosby fine. Bring in someone and let them compete each week. Better guy in practice kicks on Sundays. Treat it like any other position but don't put less importance on it considering a huge game could very well be decided by it, maybe one which decides the team's Super Bowl fate.

Assuming Masthay can kickoff at all.Keeping 2 kickers sounds great...but not sure they can pull that roster space right now with the guys they have had dinged up.

Eh, Crosby will be just fine. He is trying to hard. Once he hits a long kick he will be back to normal. Not worried.
 Disagree. He's made a few and then come back and has bad misses. Have you seen his ball flight? It's all over the place. Ball hooking one kick, then starting straight and slicing on the next. He's like a golfer having no idea where the ball is going off the tee. Most kickers that have really bad years don't turn it around mid season. Too much in their head and can't fix technique that quickly. Takes an offseason or a move. Akers is an example. Went from very reliable for years, then had a horrible year in Philadelphia, moved to SF and was unbelievably good last year (seemed every kick was right down the middle). This year he is a mess again, missing 30 yarders.I wouldn't trust Crosby on any kick the rest of the year. Willing to be he's going to get them bounced in the playoffs.

The thing is...outside of the 2011 season...he has been a below average kicker in terms of field goal percentage. And even in his best year of 2011...he was 10th...his only year over 80%...and this year he is at 58%Now...he does bring a bit more range than some kickers and does well on kickoffs...but still. He has not been a great overall kicker.

I'm riding his ### to a win this week!! No more Bing Crosby...he gets healthy with some home cooking just like against Detroit

No, No. Not saying Favre was this bad as a whole. . . . .just saying I remember how nerve wracking it was in those year when the Pack was in the 4th and trying to either win the game or put it away. Seemed like it was 50/50 for an INT. See the NFC championship game you mentioned. On a side note - I'm not sure there's a game that goes by that I'm not blown away how fortunate we have been to have another potential HOF QB right after another. Why do some teams get that while others (bears), can't catch a break.GO PACK!

After the moves that Ted Thompson has made during his tenure I'm not criticizing anything he does until GB finishes a year with a losing record . FFS his first pick was Rodgers, at a time when they still had Favre for a few more years. Teddy was disciplined enough to take a top notch QB prospect that fell to 24th instead of picking need. I THINK THAT WORKED OUT OKAY. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Separate question... how difficult is it to pick up kicking for a new team? I would imagine it is nothing like any other position where you have learn scheme and timing. You'd basically just need to practice a bunch of snaps with the long snapper and holder. I have to believe there are 50 college-experienced kickers out there qualified enough to start next game and have no problem with either kicking touch-backs or having a good chance at 40 yards or less in the NFL. Maybe touchbacks are a little tougher to do & angle correctly. But even if there are a lot of guys out there that can come in and do it, I'll stick with Teddy. He's done all right.

How times have changed. You would be hard pressed to find a Packer Fan that doesn't share the same sentiment now. He has proven it over and over again. He's laid some stinkers but big picture, TT is one of the best in the busines.
