MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- According to a National League source, the Florida Marlins have acquired outfielder Jacque Jones from the Cubs.

Full details of the deal have yet to emerge, but Jones, 31, likely is headed to Florida along with a trunk load of the Cubs' money. He's owed another $7.12 million over the next two seasons.

The Cubs had been trying to deal the left-handed hitting Jones since the offseason. Part of a crowded outfield that includes Alfonso Soriano, Cliff Floyd, Matt Murton and top prospect Felix Pie, Jones appeared in 63 games this season and hit .234 with two homers, 20 RBI and a .623 on-base plus slugging percentage.

Jones has played all three outfield positions during a nine-year big-league career that began with the Twins and conceivably will become the Marlins' primary center fielder. Center is where he has the least experience, totaling 182 games (147 starts) there, including 21 starts in 2007.

Both of Jones' two errors in 115 total outfield chances have come as a center fielder. Jones does have a 3.04 career range factor as a center field, which is better than any regular center fielder this season. His .876 zone rating is about average.

Range factor is calculated by adding putouts and assists and dividing by innings. Zone rating is the percentage of balls fielded by a player in his typical defensive zone as measured by Stats, Inc.

Jones spent his first seven seasons with the Twins before signing a three-year, $16 million free agent deal with the Cubs. Last season he tied his career high with 27 homers in 149 games and hit .285 with a .833 on-base plus slugging percentage.

Jones is due another $2.12 million this season and $5 million in 2008 to com

Just fell apart

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports that the Jacque Jones-to-Florida deal won't happen, "barring an unexpected reversal."

The Marlins wanted Jones as their primary center fielder, but apparentely the Cubs were quite desperate enough to get rid of him. Either they refused to pay the majority of the $7 million he's still owed or they wanted a better prospect in return if they were going to eat the salary.

sports radio here made it sound like this was a done deal for some single A player

I heard on espn 1000 that the Trib did not want to pay any of Jones' salary which nixed the deal. Sorry, no link. Just heard on the way home from work this morning.
