Culpepper benched? (1 Viewer)

On the early cheatsheets, McNown is the only Oakland QB ranked. Was there an announcement that McNown was the starter again, and Pepper benched?

ALAMEDA -- Josh McCown feels better. So let the quarterback games begin.

McCown, who started the Raiders' first three games before a fracture left toe sidelined him in Week 3, wants to get back on the field.

Unlike the previous two games when McCown unable to play, Raiders coach Lane Kiffin wouldn't declare Daunte Culpepper the starter for Sunday's game at Tennessee.

"We don't know that yet," Kiffin said of Culpepper starting against the Titans. "We haven't practiced yet."

The Raiders' next practice is Wednesday. If McCown is healthy, Kiffin might do as he did before the season opener and delay announcing a starter.

McCown returned to practice last week, working with the scout team in addition to individual drills. He said Monday his foot felt as good as it had in weeks and he looked forward to not being a spectator.

"I'm just glad to be back out there contributing in practice, helping," McCown said. "I, obviously, want to start and expect to when I'm back. But that will be on (the coaches) to make the best decision they can make, and I'm behind that 100 percent."

Kiffin doesn't believe an injured starter is guaranteed his job when healthy. McCown worked out Monday morning to test his foot, but Kiffin wants to see how he looks in practice.

McCown said he would need a couple of days of practice before feeling comfortable running the offense in a game, but doesn't think his timing would be off.

"I threw a little bit last week so I feel like I'm getting pretty comfortable," McCown said. "So, I don't think that should be an issue. We'll see, though, because I've never had to come back off an injury ... so that's a new thing for me. But, hopefully, it won't take long."

Kiffin will play mind games and not announce a starter till game time. Childress for the Vikings likes to play this game as well.

What a mess.

So is Culpepper really not good enough to hold off a guy like McCown, or is Kiffin just being stubborn about this?

It shouldn't be surprising to see Daunte benched. While the 3 rushing TDs look nice from a FF standpoint, it sure seems like the offense was flowing better with McNown in there.

Good be good news for Curry owners. He's been decent with CPep, but seems like he was targeted a lot more often with McKown. Anyone got handy stats on Curry with the two QBs?

when does russell get his chance? maybe around week 11-12?
I was wondering the same thing.... I have had him stashed on a couple of benches and with the QB injuries I have been in trouble and barely getting by......afraid to release him knowing as soon as I do he will get a start......but he is taking up space and my QB's stink.....any insight as to why he isn't even considered an option at this point..........could he really do much worse then what they have going right now?

He didn't sign until after the season started, so he missed the entire training camp. With game preparation week in and week out, I can't imagine team brass has had nearly the time to bring him up to speed than if he were active in camp.He may get thrown to the wolves late in the year, but then they also risk shattering his confidence like so many #1 QBs before him. That's undoubtedly the dilemma for the coaching staff.

That INT at the end of the game last week was brutal, that game was there for the taking. Yeah the Miami game was nice, but apart from that Duante has looked pretty bad, especially in the turn over department. With the defense and ST that the Raiders have, a QB who's giving up the ball is about the worst possible thing you could have, especially since they've been able to get the running game going to some extent. I wouldn't be surprised to see McCown in there.

Culpepper has an 82.2 passer rating with 4 passing TDs and 3 INTs (and 2 fumbles). McCown had a 75.2 passer rating with 4 passing TDs and 5 INTs (and 7 fumbles).

:goodposting: If these two can't get their act together we'll be seeing JaMarcus a lot sooner than most would think.

Good point - neither seem to be setting the world on fire, although McNown appears to be more of a gunslinger (and gundropper).

McCown did have a 300 yard game in Week 1 -- possibly a sign of what he can do when healthy? But he absolutely stunk it up when he was gimpy.Unless McCown is back to his Week 1 strength, I'd rather go with Culpepper.

Look, neither of these guys is going to be a viable fantasy starter. They are keeping the seat warm until JaMarcus is ready. And JaMarcus hopefully will play when the coach thinks it is time, not because McCown and Dainty Fumblepepper suck. As to the current options, McCown didn't look great for the brief time he played healthy, but I personally would like to see him back in there. Daunte can make some plays, and has a better arm, but since he came into the league, he hasn't gotten any smarter, and his hands haven't gotten any bigger. Anyone see him just DROP the ball on a rollout in Miami? Every snap is a hold-your-breath moment, because he has hands like my 15-year-old brother. I feel bad for Daunte's significant other.McCown's honeymoon was over the moment Daunte looked better in the preseason, playing vs. scrubs with a Tecmo playbook. Fans have been screaming for Daunte since August, wondering what the heck Kiffin was thinking. Here's what Kiff was thinking: With this team, avoiding turnovers is more important than trying to score 40 points. Daunte's play against San Diego was exactly why he isn't the QB for this team. This team needs to eliminate mistakes, establish the run, give the defense a break, and take a shot every now and then.Culpepper showed in the games what I am sure Kiffin was seeing in practice: A guy that can't play within the structure of an offense, avoid mistakes, and hang onto the ball. I think if McCown is healthy, Kiffin will give him the chance to keep the job, until Russell is ready.

This would be an excellent point if McCown didn't have such a high turnover rate himself.

duante looks like ####. i hated the signing & still do. give it back to mccown & put russell in week 11-12 & be done with it.
