Cowboys release Cundiff

11:47 AM CST on Monday, December 26, 2005

From Staff Reports

Cowboys have released kicker Billy Cundiff and re-signed Shaun Suisham.

In Saturday's game against Carolina, Cundiff had a 32-yard field goal blocked and missed a second field goal from 33 yards, which was negated by running into the kicker penalty.

Dallas signed Suisham to replace Jose Cortez in October, but then waived in November him to re-sign Cundiff.

If I was coach I would have cut him 5 minutes after the game and made him buy his own plane ticket back home.....its either that Or I would have pushed him out somewhere over the gulf of mexico.

:hot:

If you're looking for a one-week wonder in Week 17, Suisham might not be a bad gamble. The Cowboys should be able to roll up some points on the Rams in the finale.

good riddance!and he should have been cut right after the last fg he missed. right on the sidelines parcells should have told him to get lost.

Yea, at least you're not a UCF fan. I wanted the long snapper to swim home from Hawai'i

In Cundiff's defense... the kick he missed on the penalty would've been good, but it was definitely redirected by Peppers.Hopefully someone will pick him up next season and he'll get his head straight. He's a good kid.I'd also like to see Dallas hire back Steve Hoffman, the kicking coach that turned lead into gold for 20+ years until Parcells arrived and ran him off. He could turn my grandmother into a reliable FG kicker.

thank god. they should have kept the rookie in weeks ago and not brought back cundiff to begin with

i do not think it was definite that it was blocked. they showed the replay a couple of times and i could'nt tell if peppers hit it or not

I can say, definitively, after watching that replay 5x in hi-def, that the ball changed directions slightly right. My dad and I both agreed that the ball pushed right slightly after passing the defenders.

Forget the one that Peppers might have blocked. It was the 30 yarder before half that he duck-hooked so far to the left, that probably got him the boot. I was at that game, and the conditions were pretty good. Wind wasn't blowin that hard. I haven't seen someone miss a 30 yd FG that bad in quite a while, given decent conditions.

That one, too, had a hand on it. Regardless, Cundiff shouldn't be missing 30-yd field goals because of a block. He should be getting the ball up high enough to clear defenders at the LOS and it's pretty apparent he isn't.

- Bill Parcells
Hey Mike(or anyone really)do you recall Parcells days with the Giants? Ali Haji Sheik and other Ks. That was one of the oddest years for a team's K ever. I can't recall another coach going thru as many K changes as him and now he's almost done it a second time.

Makes me wonder if he's obsessed with having a great kicker or if other teams settle way too much OR if he's just had some of the worst Ks this year. Odd, I never would have thought it'd happen twice.

Parcells said that when he had to seriously contemplate going for it on 4th down because he had no confidense in the kicker, it was time for a change. Cundiff had clearly lost some confidense for whatever reason. Maybe Suisham can do something. I have read nothing but good things about him.And for next year, I've read that Vanderjerk might be cut for cap reasons. I'd expect Dallas would shell out big bucks for the kicker with the highest make percentage in history.

I doubt it. Dallas doesn't pay for kickers. If they were smart, they'd rehire Hoffman (if he's not obligated) and let him work his magic on some FA nobody.

Parcells seems to have the same attitude about kickers that Jimmy Johnson did with the Cowboys and Dolphins, which is that they're fungible goods and if you know their names it's a bad thing. By my count on p-f-r.com, Parcells has had 17 different FG kickers on his rosters in 17 years. Only John Hall on the Jets managed to remain his kicker throughout a given coaching tenure for the same team. He had more kickers than years with the Giants. Parcells' kickers rent rather than own their homes.

Which is a stupid philosophy by the Cowboys. Parcells wants to play close games down to the wire, and then depend on some wavier wire pickup, who was delivering pizza 2 weeks ago, to make the game winning kick.

flashback to the game against denver.cundiff missed that makeable field goal.where would we be now?possibly in the playoffs! not on the outside looking in

Not even Kris Brown :stirspot:

I know the Cowboys take pride in hiring and using kickers for cheap etc....But this season is a reason on why you "DON"T" go about doing it this way. They're fighting for their playoff lives, possibly heading into the playoffs in 2 weeks and they're still looking for a freaken kicker!

Cowboys in the market for free agent kickers

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wants to fix his team’s erratic kicking problems. So could the Cowboys break their past philosophy and shop the free-agent market to find a new kicker? "Yes," Jones said earlier this week while attending a Senior Bowl practice in Mobile, Ala. "Absolutely."

The Cowboys made 20 of 28 field-goal attempts last season, but only 10 of 17 from 30 or more yards. The Cowboys used three kickers and made four moves before rookie Shaun Suisham, a former member of the practice squad, finished the season. The kicking woes became a glaring problem and helped contribute to the Cowboys (9-7) missing the playoffs despite a 7-3 start.

Several high-profile kickers are available. New England’s Adam Vinatieri, Indianapolis’ Mike Vanderjagt, Green Bay’s Ryan Longwell, Tampa Bay’s Matt Bryant, Minnesota’s Paul Edinger and Atlanta’s Todd Peterson are unrestricted free agents. Seattle kicker Josh Brown is a restricted free agent. Bill Parcells brought in Bryant before the 2004 season to compete with Billy Cundiff, but Bryant was released after suffering an injury. Vinatieri was Parcells’ rookie kicker on New England’s Super Bowl XXXI team. However, Vanderjagt might not fit Parcells’ profile because he does not handle kickoff duties.

Jones said the Cowboys could look to select a kicker in this year’s draft. But if they did, it wouldn’t be until the late rounds.
