Cutler sending Broncos a signal? (1 Viewer)

What has Bowlen been doing throughout this whole episode?
Anyone?
I've caught wind of this in more than one place....so, it's in an official rumor stage.Belichek, being pissed at DEN raiding his team for FA's, intentionally upsets the McJay apple cart. He knows that the economics of a three way won't work and he knows that he doesn't want the salary freight that accompanies a low first round pick....BUT, he intentionally includes DEN in a three way in order to give McDaniel a taste of the behind the scenes mechanics of what it takes to be an NFL Coach.

McDaniel is naive and Xander is a newbie and they follow along, even though the up-front $'s paid out to Cutler never allow a trade of the type proposed.

The Owner....where's Bowlen? He follows along, too; knowing his neophyte has been screwed....new coach, NEW GM....he's been outfoxed before he even get's started.

:tumbleweed:
BB is pissed that the Broncos signed Jabar Gaffney and Lamont Jordan? Really?

I've read about the theory Toads mentioned too but I don't know how much is pure speculation...and I believe the Jordan signing was well after this trade talk started. I'm guessing the player the Pats would be the most disappointed in losing might be long snapper Lonie Paxton. Which is funny to me because that was the move that made little sense in my opinion considering the Broncos had Mike Leach signed for cheaper and I can't remember him ever botching a snap. Stokely was quoted as saying he was pretty unhappy with Leach leaving since Leach was a good locker room guy.

Bottom line, imo, Cutler just isn't as good as he thinks he is. This is not a good way for a yong NFL player to act towards the people that pay his salary. Blame goes both ways, but I see McDaniels and Cutler regretting this spat 3 years from now...

There are reports that Bowlen tried calling Cutler on a couple different occasions during this "drama". Same reports say that Cutler didn't return any of the calls to the Broncos owner.**I have only read this in Denver papers, but I don't believe it was ever confirmed or denied by either side.

In my judgement, these situations illustrate the difference between a professional football player, and someone you build your franchise around, and a PUNK. The guy's been behaving like an immature buffoon during this entire drama.
:blackdot: From Sports Illustrated:

Cutler is known within the league for bouts of immaturity, cockiness and stubbornness, so the incident doesn't figure to be forgotten quickly.
 How in the world can Philip Rivers fans or San Diego fans be saying anything about whiney immature QBs? That is the very definition of the pot calling the kettle black.

I also read somewhere the long snapper switch was a move that upset NE, as well as evidence of McDaniels making a poor move because he already had Leech. Maybe it was at NFP?

Cutler joined a CC. He was not following some rules, and thought he could continue to act as he pleased. One day, he's hanging around with his hat backward and a T, which wasn't allowed, and he obviously knew as much. I don't know the specifics of the confrontation and/or issue(s) therein, but here's what happened. The President went and got a $100,000 check (his membership) and told him he was gone.Obviously, it took more than just the one incident to reach that point, which is telling. And I'm also sure that the franchise QB of the Denver Broncos had a longer leash than most to begin with. All of which tells me he indeed has an attitude problem.
:tumbleweed: Seems odd that anyone joining a club like that would flaunt the common rules of etiquette. What would be the benefit?

Jay Cutler can't hold Rivers jock on or off the field.

:goodposting: Exactly.

Has a head coach ever been fired before his first game? I ask in jest, but I'm actually curious if this has ever happened. If this is a sign of things to come from McDaniels, why should the Broncos wait?
Yes. After leaving the Redskins in 1977, George Allen was hired by Carroll Rosenbloom to coach the Rams (this was Allen's second stint with the organization). After veteran player complaints about his excessive conditioning drills and overlong practices, Allen was let go during the preseason and was replaced by DC Ray Malavasi.
:hey: Thanks.

STAKES GET HIGHER IN CUTLER-BRONCOS FEUDPosted by Mike Florio on March 14, 2009, 9:13 p.m.When news broke that Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler is selling his Denver-area home, the “nothing to see here” crowd was quick to point out that Cutler owns other property in Denver, and that he has been wanting to sell the house in question for a while. We wonder what they’ll be saying now that the house in which Cutler’s parents live is up for sale, too?According to NBC 9 in Denver, the 4,100-square foot home has landed on the market, for a mere $835,000.Even if Cutler’s decision to sell his own house was a coincidence, Cutler can’t blame cluelessness on this latest development.Clearly, he wants out of Denver. And, clearly, he and his family are moving forward as if he’s going to get his way.
Clearly, PFT is making a few assumption here. But it's a great story.

So the bigger question IMO is how should this effect his redraft ranking this year? At this point in time I have to think he gets dropped a few notches based on unknowns with his situation. If he ends up on a team like CHI it would kill his fantasy value even though it makes CHI a much better team.
Prime example of what's wrong with the SP. I make an attempt to get a real conversation going about the *gasp* fantasy football implications but all we have is a thread full of opinions like "jay's needs to grow a pair". Not a single post about how this might affect our 2009 fantasy football season. I think the stars feature would be useful if it were used to rank the quality of discussion. This thread gets a zero from me.

This, if it is correct, would be unbelievable. The owner of the team calls you and you cannot show enough respect to call him back? It doesn't matter what the situation is, if the guy who signs your check wants you to get in touch with him, you do it.

Too many assumptions for my liking. Hopefully, Jay will cool off and play for the Broncos this season. After all, it is part of his contract if he wants to be paid. Get over it kid.It will take more than just finding a team that wants him and is willing to make a fair offer to make this work. Put yourself in the GM shoes for a minute. Who is your QB going to be this season if you give Cutler his way? Denver will probably look hard to find a QB to develop for the 2010 season unless they want to hang their hats on one of the free agent vets waiting by the phone.

These threads seems like endless Speculations on The Nature of Relativity....until they begin to make sense.

The "only" Denver Newspaper (that reports on sports anyway) had the Bowlen article yesterday, the one about Jay not returning the paycheck signer's calls.

Now, you gotta have some faith that the beat writer has some perspective we don't have. However, that writer's perspective included an interesting description of the circumstance: as in "Bowlen went apoplectic when Cutler failed to return his call(s).

I had to look up "apoplectic," an adjetive derived from the noun "apoplexy" which translates to 1) a severe hemorrahage or infarction, especially in the brain, 2) a stroke.

That's pretty strong "language of choice" to describe that reaction, and/or relationship.

Couple that with several other factors:

1) signing Simms at $3M + to hold a clip board, and

2) the amount of training the QB has to undergo to make the pre-snap and post-snap reads required to deliver the ball in

the McDaniel/Belichick OFF scheme, and

3) Jay's personality and demeanor.

As to #3 (Jay's demeanor). Well, he's basically thought of in social circles as a Hill Billy. He's a take it or leave it type with his hat forever on backwards. He's got a golden heart and his body language is displayed for all to see. As he saunters on and off the field, never even atempting to brake out into a trot, he just basically reeks of "I don't give a ****."

He's not the most cerebral of guys and he wears his emotions on his sleeve, as in his lip sych for all to see on national TV in last year's Game # 17 when Stokley dropped a flat pass as the Broncos were wiffing on the playoffs: "What the ****, Brandon."

It's beginning to look like there might be some substance in this thread, especially when you consider the second item, above. Jay has to really work hard to become a QB in this system. He'll have to take to a new QB coach (and OFF coordinator and HC). He'll have to become a student of the game, maybe even step out of his comfort zone.

In short, he'll have to change, and learn, and change....and that's not Jay's strong suite. He's better back peddlin' out of the pocket, throwing off his back foot and not taking the sack. As to reading and analysing coverages and delivering the ball to the 4th receiver....that's not Jay's game.

Jay will have to rely on his head, and not his arm, to be successful in this system and that's a scary thought.

So maybe, between now and August, this will unfold and we'll know where to draft Jay (and Simms) in our redrafts and start-up dynasty leagues.

In the mean time, and in between times, I'm glad I'm not Pat Bowlen; having an apoplectic attack and all as this deal works it's self out.

Cutler, McDaniels finally meet face-to-face

By ARNIE STAPLETON, AP Sports Writer

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – Jay Cutler finally met face-to-face with Josh McDaniels over the weekend, but nothing was resolved, leading to doubt the quarterback will show up for the new coach's first team meeting Monday.

Team spokesman Patrick Smyth told The Associated Press on Sunday that the coach and quarterback involved in a simmering feud over trade talks met Saturday at the team's training facility and both sides agreed to regroup and continue conversations.

Denver station KCNC-TV reported that the meeting didn't go well, and The Denver Post reported that words were exchanged between Cutler and McDaniels.

The Broncos insist they're not going to trade Cutler.

Denver's media is doing all they can to prop this up, but they do not know anything. They are just saying anything they can to fuel the fire.

I don't think anyone does redraft rankings before the NFL draft in April. But as far as Cutler's dynasty value goes, I think this hurts. If he leaves Denver, he leaves Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal, and a horrible defense. Even if he stays in Denver, it's not clear that the head coach thinks as highly of Cutler as Cutler does.

I think this little tidbit says a lot, i am getting a real feeling that Cuts will be elsewhere in 2009:

Mike Klis, of The Denver Post, reports Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen said he fully supports head coach Josh McDaniels in his feud with QB Jay Cutler and is disappointed with how Cutler has handled the situation. Bowlen said the Broncos may lose Cutler. "I'm very disappointed. I'm disappointed in the whole picture, not just disappointed that we might lose our star quarterback," Bowlen said.

That means a lot to me

Disappointed Bowlen: "We may lose our star quarterback" (Denver Post)

They have tried talking on the phone, and meeting in person. Neither apparently has worked. What's next for new Broncos coach Josh McDaniels and his disgruntled quarterback, Jay Cutler? There now appears a real possibility the two sides are headed for a divorce based on irreconcilable differences.

"I'm very disappointed," Broncos owner Pat Bowlen said Sunday of the feud between his quarterback and first-year coach. "I'm disappointed in the whole picture, not just disappointed that we might lose our star quarterback." Asked to clarify, Bowlen said he is steadfastly supports his new coach and his disappointment lies in the way Cutler has handled the situation.

Friction between Cutler and McDaniels appears to have escalated following a meeting Saturday. Attending the meeting were Cutler, his agent Bus Cook, McDaniels and Broncos general manager Brian Xanders. The Broncos say no ultimatums were given during the Saturday meeting, which the team characterized as mild-mannered, with no raised voices. However, no reconciliation was reached. "We agreed to regroup and continue to have conversations," a Broncos spokesman told the Denver Post. "The Broncos reinforced to Jay and his agent that they have been honest with them since Day One."

The breakdown came just as it appeared Cutler and McDaniels were moving towards mending their relationship. Cutler returned to Denver late last week from Nashville, where he has spent most of the offseason. With McDaniels holding his first team meeting at 8 a.m. Monday, Cutler was not only planning to attend, he agreed to a pre-emptive personal meeting with his new coach and GM.

However, according to a source close to Cutler, the quarterback didn't like what he heard and as of Sunday was set on skipping the team meeting Monday. Cutler has insisted that until his situation gets resolved, all conversation with Broncos officials must include his agent, Cook, who led the discussions in the both the conference

That comment makes no sense to me at all. Cutler is under contract for this year. The only way he doesn't play for the Broncos is if he A) sits out or B) is traded by Bowlen. It is not like Cutler can just say, "Okay I am going to trade myself."I stand by the statement that Denver is botching this big time and we are going to suck this next year at the expense of a 32 year old coach who hasn't won a pre-season game.

The thing that stands out the most to me, at this point, is Bowlen's comment about "might be losing our star quarterback". He hasn't been saying anything, so that is a rather large concession to come out and say publicly. Not good. Writing's on the wall.

Again, ever since I heard that Country Club story, and a few others to go along with it, I've been wary of him. He, without question, has a serious attitude problem, that somehow doesn't really come across to the public (until now). He has had, for some reason, a very good image. It appears we are just seeing the real Cutler now, but you can bet it's always been there, and the Broncos probably knew this was coming, one way or the other.

The fact Bowlen, who has a keen eye on the situation, is taking the coach's side in this, tells me more than any media sources, stories, or rumors ever will. It's not like he doesn't understand star QBs, or that he's not a great owner. If he is willing to go so far as to cut bait, then he thinks the kid isn't going to change. Makes some sense, because he's definitely one stubborn SOB. We know that, now...

Jeff George, Jr?

At this point, my biggest concern is that they get good value for him. I think he's gone.

Ditch the idiot coach and keep the Pro Bowl QB.

Why is the coach an idiot? What are you going on, exactly? Hearsay? Speculation? Rumors? Age? Age is a good one; easy one to pick. And "Pro Bowl?" Whatever with that; who cares? Until it says "Super Bowl", I'll wait. I'm sure his teammates need and care about the "Pro Bowl" designation. So, the individual is bigger than the team/coach? Is that what you're saying? Please name the teams in which that worked out. I'll wait...
